Jake Schmidt: Five Reasons We Need a New Global Agreement on Climate Change by 2015

UNFCCC Mtg Room in Bonn~April 2013.pngIn December 2011 countries agreed in Durban, South Africa to secure a new international legal agreement by 2015. This is not the first time that countries agreed to finalize such an agreement. Cynics point out that countries continually agree to formulate something new in the next couple of years –consistently “kicking the can down the road”. After all, the agreement in Copenhagen was supposed to be the culmination of negotiations begun in 2007 in Bali Indonesia – under the “Bali Roadmap”. We can’t afford to miss this deadline, “fudge the results”, or “kick the can down the road”. As countries meet in Germany this week for the next round of climate negotiations it is important to remember that securing a new international legal agreement in 2015 is critical for five reasons.

Here are the top five reasons countries need to agree on a new international agreement in 2015 (add yours to the comment section below). [A subsequent post will discuss five reasons why countries can secure a global agreement in 2015].

Baseball Robot Has 100,000 Neuron Fake Brain

Baseball Robot Has 100,000 Neuron Fake BrainThe day where a physical team sport is played between humans and robots are still a long way off, and might even seem to be impossible when you think of it (chess does not count!), judging by how slow progress with robots are. Sure, some enterprising folk have thought up of making a robot that steals from vending machines, but to have a bunch of robots playing soccer against the likes of Brazil or Spain, or to head into the World Series finals does seem like an impossible dream at this point in time. Still, we have got to start somewhere, which is why researchers over at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology have come up with a tiny humanoid robot which is capable of playing baseball, or at least, it hopes to do so one day.

This baseball robot, which we will call it so for now, is capable of holding a fan-like bat while it takes a swing at flying plastic balls. It might miss the first few times, but those are used to help it learn and adjust its swing accordingly with each new pitch, and eventually, it will be able to make contact – hopefully the pitcher does not drastically change the pitch, of course. This is made possible thanks to the 100,000 neuron artificial brain in the robot that is based on an Nvidia graphics processor.

Original Apple I Computer Up For Auction In Germany This May 25

Original Apple I Computer Up For Auction In Germany This May 25We have talked about at least three Apple I auctions in the past, and here we are with yet another one from German auction house Team Breker, who managed to perform quite a feat in rounding up a rather interesting array of significant “firsts” where the computing world is concerned. Their upcoming auction in Koln, Germany, is set to happen on May 25, and you might be thrilled to hear that another one of the six known original Apple I computers that are still in working condition too, will be part of the auction.

Of course, that is not the oldest item on auction, as one from a few centuries back would be a mechanical calculator that is the creation of philosopher and physicist Blaise Pascal, which hails all the way from the year 1652. Other than that, the first Intel microprocessor known as the 4004 from 1971 will also be up for grabs if you are interested, in addition to a 1975 Altair 8800. Would the last working Apple I computer manage to fetch more than $640,000 this time around?

Pirated Game Dev Tycoon Copy Results In Virtual Studios Experiencing Piracy

Pirated Game Dev Tycoon Copy Results In Virtual Studios Experiencing PiracyYou know what they say, what goes around, comes around. It seems that players who find it difficult to muster a few dollars together, and are enjoying pirated copies of ‘Game Dev Tycoon’, will suffer a somewhat similar fate in their virtual studios as the sense of irony prevails, with these virtual studios experiencing the scourge of piracy in-game, too. This was discovered after Greenheart Games rolled out a “cracked” version of its Game Dev Tycoon title to illegal downloading sites, and anyone who attempts to play the game development simulation for more than a few hours would be on the receiving end of a thinly veiled hint concerning the negative consequences of their actions. A message will pop up as you see above, informing the player that folks have taken steps to pirate their studio’s game, and profits will continue to plummet until the virtual company goes belly up.

It seems that Patrick Klug of Greenheart Games shared in a blog post, touting that the cracked version of Game Dev Tycoon comprised of more than 93% of all Game Dev Tycoon downloads, where it is meant to highlight the frustrated response of players who were experiencing the struggles of piracy in a first-hand manner. This is clearly thinking out of the box to get the message across, don’t you think so?

Synrgic Uno Announced

Synrgic Uno AnnouncedHTC of Taiwan has some pretty “numero uno” sounding names for a couple of their devices, where right now the hottest property would be the HTC One (with its microphone-gate saga) and the HTC First, which was released earlier. Well, the thriving city-state that is known as Singapore, one of the roaring economies in South East Asia, has come up with a somewhat similar slant when it comes to the smartphone’s naming convention. I am referring to the Synrgic Uno, and for most of us, we would not be able to relate to what the Synrgic Uno is all about, considering the rather obscure name in the first place.

This Singaporean startup company has positioned the Synrgic Uno to be a mid-range device that runs on Android as the operating system of choice, where it will be accompanied by a 4.7-inch, 720p IPS display with Gorilla Glass, a dual-core 1.5GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 SoC, 1GB RAM, and a SGX 544 graphics chip. Chances are this might be one of the last of the OMAP-powered smartphones before Texas Instruments bids adieu to the smartphone world, no?

Mindy Kaling Talks Steve Carell And ‘The Office’ Finale On ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ (VIDEO)

Mindy Kaling was more than willing to promote her return to “The Office” for its upcoming finale on “Late Show,” but David Letterman was a lot more interested in who else might be there. Namely, he wanted her to confirm if Steve Carell would be returning.

“You were there. You know who’s there,” he chided her when she feigned uncertainty.

“To be perfectly honest, now, I was drunk out of my mind when I shot the finale,” Kaling responded. “I couldn’t tell who was there.”

Verizon Cloud Backup Service Arrives On Android, With iOS In Its Sights

Verizon Cloud Backup Service Arrives On Android, With iOS In Its SightsMention the word “cloud” to a 60 year old, and he or she will give you a very different definition to that of the younger, tech savvy generation. After all, many of us work from the cloud itself right now. Just ask yourself, how many important documents have you stashed away onto Google Drive by now? Well, smartphone owners are definitely not “suffering” from the issue of not having enough cloud-based safety nets, considering the range of options available via the likes of Google, iCloud, or other file sync providers.

Well, Verizon is about to throw their lot into the cloud territory by deploying their very own Verizon Cloud service which will function as a crutch for anyone who wants to replace a handset on its network. Verizon Cloud will remain Android only at this point in time (web-only is supported, too) where it will deliver daily backups of your media libraries in addition to a slew of other information such as call logs, contacts and messages. Not only that, Verizon has also thrown in cross-platform safeguards, with an iOS app being in the pipeline, slated as available “soon”, alongside future OS support which ought to allow customers to retrieve some of their data should they decide to switch platforms. Thing is, the first 500MB of space is free, but if you want to do more, then you will have to fork out $3 for 25GB per month, and a monthly fee of $10 for 125GB. [Press Release]

‘The Voice’ Knockout Rounds: Blake Shelton Tells Judith Light To Punch Him In The Face (VIDEO)

This week, it’s all about the Knockout Rounds on “The Voice.” Both the Monday and Tuesday episodes run two hours long so the coaches can pare their team down from eight contestant to only four each. Like the Battle Rounds, they partner them up, but this time the contestants each sing their own song — and it’s one of their own choosing — and there is no more steal.

Fist up were Team Adam and Team Shakira, and there were definitely some powerhouse performances. Judith Light has been bowing the coaches away every time she sings, and she did it again. Facing off against Orlando Dixon, even he seemed to know he had an uphill battle with this one.

Judith wailed a Willie Nelson song, which made it sting even more for Blake Shelton. “Not only did you pick Adam [Levine] as your coach, and I wanted you badly,” he said. “Now you come up here and do a Willie Nelson song. Why don’t you just come down here and punch me in the face and get it over with?’

Microsoft launches Skype preview in Outlook.com

Microsoft has launched a preview of Skype in Outlook.com for users located in the United Kingdom, with those located in the United States and Germany being slated to get the preview “in the coming weeks.” Following the full preview roll out will be the switch from preview mode, with video and audio calling being offered across the entire expanse of Outlook.com via Skype sometimes in the coming months. Hard dates weren’t provided for any of the planned roll outs.

Skype

The preview mode of Skype enables video and voice calls from within an Outlook.com inbox, reducing the number of words you have to type in communication, says Microsoft, by making it easy to make a phone call instead. If a phone call isn’t the right solution, a video call is also possible, and if neither of those work for you, instant messaging video Skype is also possible from within a user’s inbox.

If a video is worth a thousand words, the brief video above should give you a pretty good idea of how the service works, which shows a video call being placed from within an email by selecting the contact’s image and then the relevant Skype button. Needless to say, the user must have a Skype account to use the service, with the account and Outlook.com accounts being merged.

The new feature is available via a browser plugin, which is available for Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox. Contacts can be merged from Skype with Outlook contacts once the plugin is downloaded and the accounts tied together. If you’re a frequent user of both Skype and Outlook.com, you’ll be guaranteed to have the preview by this summer, possibly sooner if you’re located in either the US or Germany.

Sydney Levin: ‘Teen Mom 2’ Finale Recap: The Biggest Moments of Their Lives

After four seasons of this show, it’s obvious that the only reality check Jenelle’s gotten has been the direct deposit kind. Recently, Jenelle was arrested for possession of heroin and assaulting her husband. I must admit, every time I see her name, I worry that it’s going to be attached to an obituary.
