Full MacBook refresh at WWDC tips analyst

Apple’s annual WWDC conference is coming up in June, and it’s expected that the company will reveal a host of new products, whether it’d be software-based or hardware-based. However, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it’s said that Apple will be releasing a refreshed line of MacBooks during WWDC.

These new MacBooks are said to be packing Intel’s latest Haswell processors, and it’s believed that while Apple puts a lot of focus on its Retina-equipped MacBook Pros, the company will continue to produce regular MacBook Pros for the foreseeable future, due to their continued popularity and lower price point.

Kuo thinks that updated regular MacBooks will start shipping soon after WWDC, but new Retina MacBooks will see a slight delay due to production issues. As for the MacBook Air, Kuo believes that the next update to the line will include Retina displays, but it’ll obviously come at a cost, just as with the other Retina MacBooks.

Earlier today, we also heard details about OS X 10.9, which could also make an appearance at WWDC this year, where the new operating system will come with even more iOS-like features. OS X 10.9 is expected to be yet another baby step towards closing the gap between OS X and iOS. Kuo also mentioned earlier today that the Retina iPad mini may not see a 2013 release due to production delays.

Angry Birds Wrecking Ball Spotted In Washington D.C. Construction Site

Angry Birds Wrecking Ball Spotted In Washington D.C. Construction Site

Rovio’s Angry Birds have been known to knock down a number of structures which their sworn pig enemies have built for several years, but one thing we have yet to see is an Angry Bird in the wild knocking real-life structures down. That is, until today.

An Angry Birds wrecking ball was spotted by Redditor bmorschwack on a construction site for an upcoming condominium community called CityCenterDC. Bmorschwack caught a glimpse of the wrecking ball as he was working on the construction site and claims the painted wrecking ball was the work of its operator as he was seen to have a Spider-Man painted hard hat while he was seen working. PSA TMobile's Samsung Galaxy S 4 available online today

Samsung’s latest flagship, the GS4, landed on Sprint and AT&T a couple of days ago, and now it’s T-Mobile’s turn to join the party — at least by way of its virtual stores. Taking advantage of the carrier’s recently unveiled pricing scheme, the Galaxy S 4 will be available starting at $149.99 up front for the 16GB model (plus the $20 extra per month for the next two years, of course). Now, if you’re looking to physically pick one up instead, you’ll have to wait a little longer, as it won’t be available at brick-and-mortar shops until May 1st.

Nintendo Offers Refurbished 3DS, DSi XL Starting At $99

Nintendo Offers Refurbished 3DS, DSi XL Starting At $99

We know there are many of you who are eyeing some of Nintendo’s recently announced Nintendo 3DS bundles that either feature an exclusive Animal Crossing: New Leaf design or Luigi-themed design. We also know spending hundreds of dollars for a handheld gaming device may not be something you could afford right now, which is why Nintendo has started to sell pre-owned Nintendo 3DS and DSi XL handhelds in its North American online store.

The “authentic Nintendo refurbished products” may feature some “minor cosmetic blemishes,” but Nintendo will provide a one-year warranty with these devices and guarantee them to be technically fully functional as they’ve been “cleaned, tested and inspected to meet Nintendo’s high standards.” The prices for the handhelds are certainly in a range most budget-minded customers could appreciate as Nintendo offers a Metallic Rose or Midnight Blue DSi XL for $99, while $169 will get you an Aqua Blue or Midnight Purple 3DS along with a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. How to sing a cutesy love song in Klingon

(Credit: Video screenshot by Michelle Starr/CNET Australia)

The Improvised Star Trek podcast has recorded in Klingon what is perhaps the most twee love song ever written: Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me.”

OK, so we may have lied a little. We don’t think it’s actually possible to make Klingon sound “cute,” never mind “cutesy.” This video is hard evidence. Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me” is possibly the cutesiest romance pop song written (although, feel free to disagree in the comments). In Klingon, it sounds like a mouthful of glitter-sprinkled gravel.

The video was created by Improvised Star Trek, a podcast that follows the adventures of the unofficial vessel the USS Sisyphus. The lyrics, as you can see (as translated by Klingon Christmas Carol) can’t really be translated exactly, so even the meaning of the song is a bit more on the, er, brutal side.

Halo Game for the Atari 2600 Released in Cartridge Form: Combat Devolved

Back in 2010, Ed Fries – former Vice-President of Game Publishing in Microsoft and one of the co-creators of the Xbox – created a “demake” of Halo for the Atari 2600 called Halo 2600 (Fries also talked about how the project came about on the linked page). Previously Halo 2600 was playable on PCs using an emulator or via its Flash port, but now the game is out as a legit Atari 2600 cartridge.

Here’s some gameplay footage of Halo 2600 courtesy of YouTuber dsdude1107:

Atari Age worked with Fries to release a cartridge version of the game. The first batch of cartridges were sold in a limited run in 2010, but they seem to be back in stock. You can order them from Atari Age for $50 (USD) each.

That’s pretty expensive, but at least each cartridge comes with a glossy label, a box and even a full color 8-page manual, all of which feature art that are waaaay better than how the game itself looks. Seriously kids, if you think the videogame trailers are misleading, imagine the crushing disappointment some of us suffered back in the day.

Windows Phone ad pokes fun at iOS vs. Android war

Windows Phone has always been left out of the mobile wars, with iOS and Android mainly taking center stage and fighting in the ring. However, Microsoft is using that to their advantage with their latest Windows Phone television ad. The ad pokes fun at the constant iOS vs. Android war by basically saying that you don’t need to fight with other users if you’re using Windows Phone.

Screen Shot 2013-04-29 at 11.41.58 AM

The ad takes place at a wedding, where everyone in the audience naturally pops out their smartphones (and tablets, in one instance) to take a picture of the moment. However, this leads to name-calling and sarcastic taunts to other guests. Obviously, an all-out fight ensues as people argue over what the better mobile platform is, while Windows Phone users casually stand there using their Nokia Lumia 920 devices.

Microsoft feeds off of the oft-forgotten mobile platform in the mobile wars, and uses that to their advantage, touting that if you have a Windows Phone device, there’s no need to argue over which mobile platform is the best, because Microsoft argues that you have the best in your hand in the first place.

It seems that more and more companies are aiming their sights at competitors and downplaying the features on these devices rather than market their own products and demo some of the features on their own smartphones and tablets. We get that Microsoft thinks they’re not included in the mobile wars because they’re already the best, but they fail to really list why they’re the best.

Google Now for iPad and iPhone hands-on: Exclusivity Ends

This week the until-now Android-exclusive system Google Now reaches out to iOS inside the Google Search app for Apple’s iPad and iPhone. Both versions are tuned to the display size they appear on, with sets of “cards” appearing in a single column for iPhone and a set of two columns for iPad. These cards contain information about current events and the environment around the user based on their search history and interests.

twoup

Much like the Android version of Google Now, this interface shows several different kinds of cards, each of them containing information based on the unique user that’s using them. If a user has worked with Google Now outside of iOS before they sign in initially, they’ll find cards based on their use of Google waiting for them. In our example here, two sports teams recent game scores appear, a map to work appears, and several birthday announcements appear.

Google Now is part of a user’s Google Search experience, meaning they’ll be getting results – cards, that is – based on what they’ve worked with in the past for search terms. If a user has never searched for anything in Google while being logged in to their Google account at the same time, results will appear as example cards. Example cards show what COULD be displayed for the user if they’d agree to have their search results utilized.

firstmay

With the iPhone and iPad versions of Google Now, it would appear at first that the user’s calendar will not be used as it would in an Android device. If one does use Google Calendar separate from iOS, they’ll still be able to see dates of Birthdays, connections to events, and etcetera. Birthday announcements can be sourced from a user’s Google+ social networking account as well, as this connection is also made possible via the user’s all-encompassing Google account.

choices

One of the key reasons a user might prefer using Google Now with an Android device rather than with an iOS device is their ability to access the system easily. With some Android devices, the user is able to hold their finger down on their on-screen home button and swipe up to move into Google Now. Some devices working with Android allow access to Google Now with a long-press of a back or menu button.

activator

Jailbreak app “Activator”

Intrepid iOS hackers have already made inroads to similar access with apps like “Activator”. This app allows Jailbroken (read: hacked) iPhones to launch apps using a variety of gestures and button presses. Tie your home button to Google Now for a real slick experience.

settings

Users can turn Google Now OFF in Google Search settings – that tiny gear!

Users will be able to check this Google Now experience out by updating (or downloading) Google Search for iOS on their iPhone or iPad starting today. Let us know how you’re liking it – or if you’re avoiding it – in our Google Now chat in Google+ right this minute!

Sony Xperia SP on sale now in the UK at T-Mobile, Orange and EE

Sony Xperia SP on sale now in the UK at T-Mobile, Orange and EE

Sony’s mash-up Xperia, the SP, is taking its transparent element light show to the UK today, giving budget-minded Brits one stylish and feature-packed mobile alternative. The 4.6-inch 720p handset, which is basically a Best of… edition of the Xperia S and P with an aluminum unibody, is shipping now at T-Mobile UK for £250 outright (about $387 USD), whereas Orange and EE are offering up the device for free with qualifying plans. If you want LTE, however, you only have one carrier option and that’s EE — a choice that’ll have you shackled for a two-year period. As for O2 and Three, those carriers still have the SP listed as “coming soon,” but it’s safe to say you won’t find a better bargain than *free.

Microsoft Kinect Hacked To Become A ‘BoobTracker’

Ever since Microsoft’s Kinect was released, we’ve seen a number of people hack the device to perform a number of tasks such as controlling your PC, turning your body into a music mixer and giving you power over your Roomba. But one hack we are surprised took this long to create is the BoobTracker.

YouTube user Mizirk uploaded a video last month that showed off his Kinect hack which makes it possible for the device to not only track your chest, but also cover your nipples. In order to use the program, you’ll raise your right hand in order to activate its floating objects which will track and cover your naughty chest region. Lifting your left hand will make the objects completely disappear, while lifting your right hand again will change the type of objects covering your chest that rang from cats, to pineapples, even to a face of Sterling Archer.
