The NiteCore TM26 “Tiny Monster” Flashlight uses four superbright CREE XM-L U2 LEDs to light up the darkest of nights. Despite its monstrous brightness level, it can actually run for up to 1000 hours using four 2600mAh Li-ion 18650 or eight CR123 batteries. You can also use fewer batteries in an emergency.

Parse Facebook deal sees developer boost in face of naysayers

This week the folks at Facebook and Parse have announced that they’re joining teams, effectively, as the social networking giant acquires the company known for backend infrastructure for mobile apps. As a selection of notes from developers has appeared in comments and forums surrounding the acquisition suggesting they’d leave Parse in fear of Facebook, Parse CEO suggests the opposite has been happening. Noting the service’s growth rate has increased by more than 9.4 times its normal rate, Parse CEO Ilya Suhkar has made a case for Facebook’s influence as wholly positive.

Parse developer user base sits at around 60,000 at the moment, and heads at both Facebook and Parse has been adamant thus far about making sure they know the full extent of Facebook’s influence in the near future. A statement has been released making it relatively clear that Facebook has no intent on changing the way that Parse-developed app data is used. Parse competitors are using this situation as an opportunity to drain the company of disloyal developers.

One example of a competing service looking to capitalize on the Facebook acquisition of Parse is StackMob. This company has created a set of import tools made to make the move between Parse and themselves as simple as possible, and Parse developers have suggested they’ve been contacted by other services since the announcement as well.

“Q: Will my Parse app be affected in any way? No.
Q: Will Parse apps have to use Facebook functionality? No.
Q: Will Parse honor my contract? Yes, of course.” – Ilya Sukhar, Parse CEO

In the acquisition of Parse, Facebook has claimed it will bring several next-generation tools to the fold, making Parse’s draw more powerful under the rule of the social network. Advertisement-selling features will be added for developers to make use of, and new Facebook login tools will be made much easier to work with, of course. Parse developers will also be able to work with Facebook’s Open Graph for mobile as well.

The White House Now Has An Official Tumblr Page

The White House Now Has An Official Tumblr Page

The White House, through its official Twitter account, has announced that it now has an official Tumblr Page. It also promises that there will be GIFs, though doesn’t elaborate what kind of GIFs will be uploaded to this page. Perhaps we will get to see President Obama fist bump White House staffers? We’ve also been promised amazing pictures of Bo, who is the first family’s dog, “wonky charts,” some iconic quotes from the President and details of interesting things going on inside the White House that can be publicly shared.

This administration is in no way a stranger to social media. They’ve heavily relied on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ in the past, and still do, to engage with people. The President also did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit late last year. The White House will also be taking submissions via the Tumblr submission tool, advice and questions to engage with readers. It goes without saying that some of us are actually excited about GIFs coming out of the White House, one can only wonder what they’ll show us!

Morephone Prototype Shape Shifts Instead Of Ringing To Notify Users

The Morephone is an interesting prototype, one that offers a glimpse of what mobile phones of the future may look like. It is based on a very unique concept, the phone has a flexible display and it subtly shape shifts instead of ringing whenever the user needs to be notified. For example, calls are often missed when one’s phone is on silent, but this concept certainly presents a fix for that problem.

Users are also able to customize how the Morephone “morphs,” this way users can ascertain on a single glance at the phone’s shape which type of alert they’re receiving. This prototype has been developed by researchers of the Human Media Lab at Queens University. It is evident from the video posted above that the Morephone is in no condition to hit the market, though the researchers believe that the technology will be ready for public release in the next five to ten years. However it is indeed amazing to watch this prototype morph when it needs to notify the user. I can only imagine what the phone would look like if there are a bunch of different notifications that make it morph in their own separate ways!

Attraktsionus Double Ferris Wheel: Twice the Fun, Possibly Twice as Dangerous

I love a good amusement park ride as much as the next guy, but even I might have some second thoughts about riding on this unusual double ferris wheel if it ever showed up at my local Six Flags.

attraktsionus double ferris wheel

Designed by the frequently whimsical, always creative team at Art Lebedev Studios, the Attraktsionus concept would link two ferris wheels together with a single set of cars that can travel between them.

attraktsionus double ferris wheel 1

Presumably, some sort of giant belts or cables would drive the cars between the two wheels, thus combining the sensation of riding a ferris wheel with that of a gondala ride. Thanks to the different wheel sizes, the whole thing looks like a giant bicycle chain when viewed from a distance.

I’m doubtful that we’ll ever see this ride turn up at real world amusement parks, but I do think it would be cool to create a whole series of fantastic and impossible rides like this. Oh yeah, there already is

Google Glass Jailbreak Has Been Achieved

Google Glass Jailbreak Has Been Achieved

Google Glass has only been shipped out to a few select people, dubbed Explorers, and they are keeping the public informed about the various details of this gadget through a variety of mediums. Jay Freeman, a.k.a Saurik, is regarded as a legend in iOS jailbreak arena. He also happens to be a Google Glass Explorer, and what did he do with his unit? He performed a jailbreak.

The Google Glass jailbreak gives Jay Freeman root access, which means he has unadulterated access to the underlying Android operating system that Glass is running on. He said that the entire process took him a couple of hours, he just had to make it think that it was an emulation and not the actual hardware. He was then given root access, which is the norm with emulations, as they’re used for testing. This Google Glass jailbreak was performed using an Android 4.0 exploit that was initially discovered by B1nary, who is another hacker. Stephen Lau, the Google X project engineer, confirmed that the company has intentionally left Explorer edition units unlocked so that Explorers can hack it and can do crazy stuff with it. So it can’t be said for sure whether consumer Google Glass units, which won’t be available until 2014, will be able to be jailbroken.

Ethiopian Airlines First To Start Boeing 787 Dreamliner Commercial Flights

Back in January Boeing’s latest airplane, the 787 Dreamliner, was grounded because of fire related incidents caused by its battery system. Last week the flight ban was finally lifted after nearly three months of the global fleet being grounded. On 27th April, Saturday that is, Ethiopian Airlines became the first airline to begin the first 787 Dreamliner commercial flight with paying passengers on board. This was the first commercial flight since January, 2013.

The flight took off from Addis Ababa and landed safely in Nairobi. The 787 Dreamliner airplane used on this flight is one of the four that Ethiopian Airlines has in its fleet. Boeing has previously said that it will take five days per plane to install the modified battery system, and Ethiopian Airlines CEO confirmed that the remaining three aircraft were being retrofitted with the new battery system. In the U.S., United Airlines has scheduled the started of commercial 787 flights on 31st of May. ANA, a Japanese airlines, has the largest Dreamliner flight in the world right now and it will be conducting a test flight first before it schedules commercial flights on this aircraft.
