The TSA Found Human Skull Fragments Inside a Clay Pot

This is unsettling. The TSA found something wonkier and more gruesome than your usual box cutter or vibrator or even loaded gun this week: they found an actual human skull. Yeah. At Fort Lauderdale Airport, TSA screeners discovered that the remains of a human skull and its teeth were hidden inside clay pots. The skull was mixed in with the dirt. More »

Carfax suffers antitrust lawsuit from auto dealerships across the nation

Carfax is a service that allows users to essentially perform a background check on cars, getting a look into their history and whether they’ve been in any reported wrecks, been salvaged, or any other details that could drastically reduce the asking price. While some consumers swear by the service, some dealerships aren’t happy with it, saying that the company is “monopolist” and in violation of antitrust laws.

A total of 120 car dealerships have joined forces to file an antitrust lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against Carfax, rallying against what they say is its anti-competitive practices and other related issues. The dealerships are located across the nation, spanning from California to the East Coast and back again.

Such a high number of dealerships exceed what the plaintiffs, represented by Bellavia Blatt Andron & Crosset, expected, with their attorney saying they anticipated between 25 and 50. Such wasn’t the case, with many more proving eager to take part in the push against Carfax and its alleged devious actions, which include charging higher-than-industry-norm rates for dealers to pull up vehicle history reports and exclusive agreements that leave its competitors without a leg to stand on.

For example, the lawsuit says that Carfax has exclusive agreements that requires dealers to purchase its history reports. With dealers in this vice, the company then jacks the price up, charging more than is considered within the normal range. Another problem is the exclusive agreements it is said to have with AutoTrader.com and Cars.com that require dealers who list used cars on the sites to only provide history reports from Carfax.

Carfax said it can’t comment on the issue.

As Schmidt speaks of caution, Google Glass gets hacked

Hackers are starting to crack Glass.

Within hours of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt’s revelation that apps for Google Glass will require Google’s approval, a renowned hacker/developer has shattered the notion of locked-down Glass. More specifically, Jay Freeman — aka “Saurik” — has jailbroken it.

Freeman is also the creator of the popular Cydia app store for jailbroken iOS devices, and he tweeted a photo Friday afternoon that’s apparently a capture of the “Device info” dialog for the pair of Glass he purchased from Google as a developer. It describes the device as “Jailbroken ;P”

Freeman told Forbes that once he realized his Glass was running Android 4.0.4 — also known as Ice Cream Sandwich and common to many 2012 era Android phones — he began testing known Ice Cream Sandwich exploits and found one from a hacker known as B1nary that gave him root access and full control of the Glass.

Google Glass Has Already Been Hacked and Rooted

Though Google Glass runs Android, it’s not exactly as wide open as your typical Android phone. And given its spot as the most futuristic tech available right now, you know hackers want to tinker with Google’s specs. Posting the image you see above to Twitter, Intel teases that in approximately 3,337,200,000,000,000 nanoseconds Intel will reveal their hotly anticipated 4th gen Intel Core processor to the world. Basically right at the beginning of Computex 2013, where we’ll see loads of Haswell powered hybrid PCs and more.

Haswell hasn’t been much of a secret, and earlier this month we confirmed Intel had already started shipping Haswell to an array of PC manufacturers. Haswell promises to bring a major boost in performance and more importantly battery life over Ivy-bridge for all those ultra-portables.

Around the same time we are also expecting to see Windows Blue show its face, so this years Computex is looking to be a pretty exciting event. We all knew the chip was coming but now all you enthusiasts can circle a time around June 3rd on your calendar and start getting ready for the onslaught of Haswell based systems. We could even see a few Android-based systems too, so stay tuned.
