3D Printed Sugar Sculptures Look Too Good to Eat

If you’re a regular follower of Technabob, you know I’m a big fan of 3D printing tech. As prices come down, and speed and accuracy come up, 3D printers will become ubiquitous. While most 3D printing is done by melting plastic, did you know that you sugar can be used to make 3D prints too?

Kyle and Liz von Hasseln of The Sugar Lab have developed a method for printing complex geometric forms using sugar. They intend on using their technology to create sugar sculptures for topping cakes, but many of their current examples stand on their own as works of art.

The duo previously developed a 3D printing method which used the light produced by an off-the-shelf printer, and moved by a robotic arm, to create large sculptures out of resin.

It’s unclear what method is used to print their sugar sculptures, though it involves alternating sugar layers with water and alcohol to harden the sculptures as they’re printed.

Why the Grumpy Cat movie is a bad idea

Grumpy Cat is going Hollywood.

(Credit: Grumpycats.com)

I don’t mean to sound all grumpy, but now that the news of Grumpy Cat getting a movie deal has sunk in, I’m feeling pretty frowny about the Internet-famous cat’s future in Hollywood.

Don’t get me wrong. I have serious love for Grumpy Cat. The three-Grumpy-Cat-moon image is the background on my iPad. I very nearly bought that hideous Grumpy Cat belt at Hot Topic. I might still buy it.

Let’s just say the announcement of producer Todd Garner and his company aiming for a “Garfield”-style feature film about the feline doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in me. After all, he was the man behind Adam Sandler’s 2011 flop “Jack and Jill.” What, was Martin Scorsese not available, or just not interested?

This whole Grumpy Cat-goes-to-Hollywood road is not all paved in Fancy Feast and catnip mice. Let’s look at the history of Internet memes that have become successful movies. Just give me a moment, I’m still trying to think of one. Fine, I give up.

The one piece of this news that most worries me is the plan to give Grumpy Cat the power of human speech. We know Bill Murray won’t be in the running for t… [Read more]

Tweetbot 1.3 for Mac adds media timeline, support for cover images

Tweetbot 13 for Mac brings a media timeline, cover images

Tapbots’ Tweetbot for Mac already has a reputation as the desktop Twitter client for media hounds, but a just-posted 1.3 update should make that especially clear. Like its iOS counterpart, the Mac app gains a dedicated media timeline: start a search and you can spotlight only photos and videos. There are a few perks for the vain among us, too. Tweetbot now supports profile cover images, and a redesigned tweet layout shows the counts for those inevitable favorites and retweets. So long as $20 isn’t too much to pay for a dedicated social networking tool, 1.3’s greater media savviness is waiting at the Mac App Store.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will have IR-Blaster support: here’s why

Because both the Samsung GALAXY S 4 and the HTC One work with infrared-blasting hardware and they’ve both been grabbed by Google in the past few weeks, the next version of Android will likely have IR-Blaster-supporting drivers built-in. It’s been confirmed today that both the HTC One and the Samsung GALAXY S 4 in their “Google Editions” will not have IR-Blaster support because this connection to their hardware is not part of the basic build of Android – it’s made by HTC uniquely, and Samsung uniquely. As this is true, and as Android’s next big update is well on it’s way, one thing follows the other.

remote

Because Android 4.2.2 is the launch version both of these devices will be coming with, IR-Blaster support will not be a reality for either piece of hardware immediately. It will be in the next big update of the Android mobile operating system that this support will be pushed – and as if it were planned all along, they’ll have two devices in their Google Play store that work with said support.

When Google introduced Miracast support for their devices, it was especially confusing. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean wireless display mirroring works with the Miracast wireless connectivity standard, but because this standard hasn’t been widely adopted, there are precious few instances where anyone is able to make use of it.

android_jelly_bean

In fact, not every device that claims to be “Miracast” is working with the same technology. Even several months after Android 4.2 was introduced, this remains largely true.

But here comes an opportunity for Google to shine. As the “Nexus user experience” hits both the HTC One Google Edition and the Samsung GALAXY S 4 Google Edition, so too do we inch closer and closer to a time when it makes sense for Google to introduce Android 4.3. We’ve seen this operating system creeping around our own visitor ranks as early as May 5th.

So while we’ll just have to wait and see, the fact that IR remote functionality is supported by the Linux kernel may just be too simple an equation not to add up. Vanilla Android infrared remote device control, here we come.

BlueStacks to offer GamePop Android game console for $129, expands title lineup

BlueStacks to offer GamePop Android game console for $129, extends free preorder through June

BlueStacks is taking on OUYA in a big way, having announced its Android-powered GamePop game console a few weeks ago. The company wouldn’t give specifics on how much the device would cost when it was first unveiled, although it offered an option to get the console for free through May — provided you were willing to subscribe to the $7-per-month service for at least a full year, which gives you full access to a large number of paid and free mobile games. Today, BlueStacks announced that the free offer has been extended through June, after which time the console can be yours for $129. What’s more, the service has inked partnerships with more gaming developers, adding at least another $50 worth of titles to its overall catalog. One such company is COM2US, which will feature its very own channel in GamePop’s UI. Head to the source link to get your pre-order in.

Concept Coke can splits in two for sharing

If sharing fluids strikes you as icky, Coca-Cola’s shareable can may be just the thing. A simple twist and the 330-milliliter can splits in half, one for you and one for a friend. Ideally, you should only do this with one buddy, as the can doesn’t multiply any further.

The idea of this shareable can originated with ad agency Ogilvy & Mather Singapore, though the group that came up with the idea has since left the company. The concept was based on a Pepsi can that had been cut in half to be used as an ash tray. Passersby in Singapore recently could grab a shareable can from a “happiness truck,” though we reckon it’s unlikely the can will end up being made as a real product that’s widely available.

It’s not the first time the beverage company has made a video that plays on the friendship theme. In 2011, it showed off a super tall vending machine from which you could buy a drink, with the help of a friend to boost you up.

Huge asteroid buzzing Earth has its own moon

Radar images show that space rocks have companions, too.

(Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/GSSR)

The huge asteroid — 1.7 miles long, to be exact — that is zipping by Earth this week isn’t alone.

No, it isn’t carrying an alien virus or a golden DVD containing the second season of “Firefly,” but it does have a traveling companion. NASA radar images just released show a previously undiscovered moon orbiting the asteroid known as “QE2,” technically making it a binary asteroid system.

The smaller asteroid circling its larger celestial road trip buddy is estimated to be about 2,000 feet wide.

This actually isn’t that unheard of. NASA estimates that about 16 percent of larger (over 655 feet) near-Earth asteroids are binary or triple systems.

Sony CEO Hirai: Xperia Z coming to a US carrier shortly

Sony CEO Hirai: Xperia Z coming to a US carrier shortly

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai had some good news to deliver on stage at D11 — for US fans, at least. According to him, the Xperia Z, which currently serves as the company’s flagship smartphone, is expected to arrive on a US carrier shortly. Unfortunately that’s the extent of the details Kaz was willing to offer up, as we expect he wants to give the unnamed operator the opportunity to make the announcement itself. With that said, we have our suspicions that T-Mobile may be involved, thanks to its recent appearance in the FCC with T-Mobile radios. He did, however, mention that this success story is in part thanks to the company’s increased marketing efforts in this part of the globe. We’ll keep you updated with the news as it trickles out.

Update: David Beren from TmoNews grabbed a few shots of the Xperia Z with T-Mo branding, which certainly adds credence to our suspicions that the Z will wind up with the UnCarrier.
