The Internet Games Database Is Now In Closed Beta

Most of you likely know of the Internet Movie Database – or IMDB – for short. It’s one of the most comprehensive sources of movie information online, covering everything from actors to production crews to reviews. It also purports to cover video games, but that’s not its primary focus. Soon, it may not need to be a focus at all: a project known as the Internet Game Database is now in closed beta.

Poppy Hands On: Turn Your iPhone into a 21st Century View-Master

The Fisher-Price View-Master has entertained generations of kids with stereoscopic views of famous landmarks and cartoon characters since its advent in 1939. Problem was, these iconic gadgets could only display images, never record them. But the Poppy can. It turns your iPhone into a 3D camera.

Pioneer’s SC-79 uses HDBaseT to feed HDMI video throughout the home (hands-on video)

dnp Pioneer's SC79 is the first to use HDBaseT for highquality video across rooms eyeson

In addition to showcasing its new speaker bar, Pioneer is talking up three audio-video receivers here at CE Week, including one that offers a pretty nifty industry first feature. Though the trio of home theater components are fairly similar, the SC-79 is the most notable, as it’s the first such device to feature embedded HDBaseT support. That means it can deliver uncompressed HD video — even 4K — at distances of up to 300 feet using an Ethernet cable rather than HDMI. It’s not yet a widely adopted spec, but it’s especially useful for a multi-room setup, since it requires only one wired connection. That leads us to the other standout feature: the SC-79 can output audio and video to four zones simultaneously, and you can control media across multiple rooms via an Android or iOS app. All that functionality will cost you a pretty penny when the receiver launches in July: the MSRP is $3,000. See it in action right after the break.

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Lounging around in the sun is great and all, but what to do on a rainy day? One option is to get some TV time in, and Sky’s got a few updates to share that might tempt you in front of a screen on dreary afternoons. At some point this summer, shows from Fox, Universal and SyFy will be available on Sky’s On Demand service, as well as content from Disney if you’re signed up for the Entertainment Extra package. Mobile apps will be getting a makeover, with “enhanced navigation” and a new design including bigger thumbnails when cruising through the VOD library. The Sky Go Xbox 360 app will also be updated to bring it in line with Microsoft’s UI style. Furthermore, Sky Multiroom subscribers will get access to Sky Go Extra, which allows you to download content in addition to streaming, at no extra cost in early July. Vitamin D’s overrated anyways.

HTC 8XT with Windows Phone and BoomSound launching on Sprint this summer

BoomSound comes to Windows Phone with the HTC 8XT, coming to Sprint this summer

HTC’s bone-shaking BoomSound front facing speakers are making their way to Windows Phone later this year. The 8XT, which appears to be a slightly tweaked variant of last year’s 8S, will launch on Sprint’s 4G LTE network for $99.99 with a two-year contract — after a $50 rebate card. Powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor paired up with 1GB of RAM, we want to say the 8XT has the same 4.3 inch 720p screen as its older cousin, but the spec sheet in our hands merely says “crisp”. The front of the phone has a 1.6-megapixel camera, while the rear has an 8-megapixel shooter. You’ll also have to make do with 8GB of memory for your music, but microSD expansion means you can easily make room for more.

Update: We can now confirm the 8XT has a 800 x 480 pixel resolution screen.
