Sprint launching Samsung ATIV S Neo with unlimited LTE for $150 after rebate this summer

Image

There may not be too many mobile-focused surprises at Microsoft Build, as Sprint has just let slip its two biggest pieces of news. In addition to HTC’s 8XT, the company will carry Samsung’s latest Windows Phone 8 handset, the ATIV S Neo at some point in the near future. The ATIV S followup comes with a 4.8-inch HD display, a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and a 2,000mAh battery, as well as unspecified WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth features. There’s no word about on-board storage, but the release specifically mentions a microSD card slot, so we’d assume you can add either 32 or 64GB more storage to the unit.

On the imaging front, there’s an 8-megapixel primary camera with an LED flash, as well as a 1.9-megapixel front-facing lens with “Manga Camera” and “Beauty Shot” apps to transform your selfies and smooth away those wrinkles. The phone will also have “international roaming,” meaning that owners won’t suffer the pain of traveling to CDMA-phobic parts of the world like Europe. Dan Hesse’s big Yellow Network isn’t talking about a release date beyond “summer,” but when this handset does make it to stores, it’ll set you back $149.99 with a two-year, unlimited LTE deal after the customary $50 mail-in rebate.

Why Drone Engineering Sucks (And How It Gets Better)

Why Drone Engineering Sucks (And How It Gets Better)

Despite our international obsession with drones—both their awesome powers and terrifying repercussions—the truth is that they’re an incredibly immature technology. And, like most immature technologies, that means they’re not quite all they’re cracked up to be.

Pioneer introduces first sound bar in 15 years: six speakers and a subwoofer for $399 (hands-on)

DNP Pioneer introduces first sound bar in 15 years six speakers and a subwoofer for $399

The last time Pioneer introduced a speaker bar was 1998, but 15 years later the company’s giving it another go. The just-announced speaker bar system, the SP-SB23W, will retail for $399 this fall — reps said the device was designed to pump out high-quality audio without sacrificing a small, attractive design. It’s clearly not the most compact rig on the market, but it does offer decent output. It features six independently amplified speakers and an eight-channel active digital crossover network. There’s also a wireless subwoofer with a 6.5-inch driver and Dolby Digital decoding on board.

On the noisy show floor here at CE Week, it was a little difficult to judge sound quality definitively, but the dialogue recording we heard did sound extremely crisp. For those who already count a Pioneer speaker or two among their home theater setup, the speaker bar should fit in perfectly; it sports a wood — rather than plastic — construction, and the company says its cabinet enclosure offer better control of the speakers “because of its resistance to unwanted resonance.” Check out our hands-on photo gallery below, and head past the break for the full press info.

Kinect-Powered Roaches Are an Army of Grossness

It’s not very common to find an enthusiastic fan of motion-controlled gaming, but it’s rarer to find an enthusiastic fan of roaches. But for the unlikely fan of both, researchers have developed the best(?) of both worlds: Kinect-controlled cockroaches.

Olloclip announces 2x telephoto lens for iPhone 5, we go hands-on

Olloclip announces telephoto lens for iPhone 5, we go handson

Remember the Olloclip lens for the iPhone 4? That model’s done mighty well in Apple retail stores, so it’s only fitting that there’s a follow-up. Today at the CE Week line show in New York, we got a look at the company’s upcoming telephoto lens, which complements the original clip-on by adding 2X magnification. Priced at $100 versus $70 for its predecessor, the accessory offers a circular polarizing lens on the other side, keeping in line with the company’s existing two-in-one design. You can get the standalone clip-on lens for the aforementioned price when the gadget debuts in July — it’s compatible with Olloclip’s previously announced $49 iPhone 5 case as well.

Ecoxgear unveils the Ecorox waterproof Bluetooth speaker

So you happen to have a great love for all things in the great outdoors, and since this is the 21st century, what is the point of spending time under a canopy of stars when you do not have the right kind of music and background soundtrack to guide you along the way? A portable speaker which is rugged in nature would definitely come in handy, and Ecoxgear has just unveiled their Ecorox waterproof Bluetooth speaker. The Ecorox has been touted to be the most rugged and durable portable Bluetooth speaker in the world, anyone out there who cares to dispute this particular claim? Touted to offer 100% waterproof protection (IPX7 approved) and a rubberized shockproof casing, the Ecorox is tough enough to withstand drops, dunks, and even the most severe outdoor elements without batting an eyelid.

So what if you want to spend most of your time near a body of water, whether it be by a lake, at the riverbank, or by the beach? The Ecorox waterproof Bluetooth speaker will still be able to get the job done, as it will remain afloat despite being dropped into water, ensuring that you as well as the rest of nature will be able to tune in to some Justin Bieber. Not only that, it will also come equipped with a detachable carabiner clip as well as a standard bottom screw mount, coming in a lightweight and compact size so that you can attach the Ecorox waterproof Bluetooth speaker to just about anything, including your bike, backpack, tent, or car.

Since it hooks up to your smartphone or Bluetooth compatible device, the Ecorox is able to play music or answer incoming calls, but if you want the conversation to remain private, then that is not such a good idea after all. Underneath the chassis lies a rechargeable lithium battery which paves the way for up to 10 hours of non-stop music playback. Expect to pick up the Ecorox waterproof Bluetooth speaker from June 25th onwards in Apple retail stores in US as well as Canada for $129.99 a pop, where you can choose from red, orange and black colors.

Cat Fighter: Feline vs. Feline

When cats fight, it’s best that you steer clear and let them resolve the issue themselves. I don’t know about you, but I’m not too eager to step in between a cat fight, especially when the claws are out.

The Pet Collective put a pretty interesting twist to cat fights that you will no doubt find amusing, and it’s called Cat Fighter.

Cat Fighter

It’s a catty parody of the video game Street Fighter, and it’s excellently done, if you ask me. Instead of Ken and Ryu, we’ve got Ren and Kyu (see what they did there?) They’ve got nothing but their claws and sheer ferocity to fight their battles with.

Ken and Ryu rivalry is re-imagined on a feline level. See these Kittens hash it out in some retro SNES fashion.

Most cats probably can’t do the high jumps and backflips that you see Ren and Kyu doing, but hey, this is a parody after all.

On a side note, I find it extremely amusing to see a 5-Year Q&A journal in the center of the fighting arena, since I have the exact same one on my desk right now. Maybe I can host my own Cat Fighter tournament here when my sister visits and brings her kitties with her next week, eh?
