Sony has officially launched the Xperia Z Ultra, an even larger version of the Xperia Z fronted by a 6.4-inch Full HD display and waterproof just like its smaller sibling. Billed as the world’s largest Full HD smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra features Sony’s TRILUMINOS technology – as on the company’s BRAVIA HDTVs for more

We really wanted to love Sony’s SmartWatch last year, but we couldn’t. Which is to say, it made us want to bite our own arms off
Sony SmartWatch 2 unveiled: a water-resistant ‘second screen’ for Android devices
Posted in: Today's ChiliSony’s taking a second stab at the fledgling wearable category it helped pioneer with today’s announcement of the SmartWatch 2. The Android-powered wristwatch retains the familiar remote functionality of its predecessor (i.e., allowing users to answer calls, read email and texts, snap photos, etc.), albeit now from a larger, 1.6-inch (220 x 176) touch display. Sony’s packed all of this “second screen” functionality into a handsome, aluminum body design that’s crafted to be dust- and water-resistant (IP57), much like the Xperia Z line before it. And for users that want a little variety, the company’s also offering a pack-in stainless steel wristband that can be swapped out for any other 24mm strap (Sony plans to offer alternative straps sometime soon).
The SmartWatch 2 also features support for NFC and Bluetooth 3.0, so you can easily pair it with compatible devices running Android 4.0 or higher — something like the Xperia Z Ultra, perhaps. As for battery life, Sony claims the SmartWatch 2’s rated for a maximum of four days with moderate use. But those with a lighter touch, or a penchant for digital wristwatches, may be able to eke out a full week’s worth of juice. There’s no pricing information to share at the moment, only a semi-concrete global release date for this September. Which is just about enough time for you (or, more likely, your Dad) to dust off that Dick Tracy impersonation.

And here we face a conundrum. On the one hand, Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra has salivation-worthy guts. On the other hand, the screen on this thing is 6.4 freaking inches! That’s not a phone, that’s a tablet you talk into.
Sony Xperia Z Ultra official with 6.4-inch 1080p screen and 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 chip, global launch in Q3 2013
Posted in: Today's ChiliSony’s unveiled its latest addition to its Xperia Z series, a new smartphone that blurs the line between smartphone and tablet once more — the appropriately named Xperia Z Ultra. Packing a 6.4-inch display that runs at 1080p resolution, it bests other similarly gigantic superphones that all currently hover around 720p. This new screen is paired with Qualcomm’s latest and greatest mobile processor, the impressively potent 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM and 4G LTE connectivity too.
It all weighs in at 212 grams (over 50 grams more than the Xperia Z) but the body has been slimmed down to a mere 6.5mm uniform thickness, jostling with the barely announced Ascend P6 for title of thinnest phone despite those high-end specifications (and screen dimensions). There’s 16GB of built-in storage, 11GB of which is user-accessible, while a microSD slot will add an additional 64GB if needed. To power that screen, Sony has also cranked the battery pack up to 3,000mAh and we’re hoping that will be enough for all those high-end components it’ll be powering. There’s no specifics on LTE bands just yet, but the phone also packs a pentaband HSPA radio, ensuring the global model will play nice on AT&T’s 3G service, at least, when it launches later this year. We’ve got more details (especially on that display) after the break.

It’s back! Yes, what you’re looking at above is the Start button (plus matching options) that’s been rumored to return with Windows 8.1 (formerly “Blue”). Yesterday .NET developer Robert McLaws tweeted a series of screenshots of Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview (build 9431) which show the new Start button and a revised “Taskbar and Navigation properties” dialog — among other things. Microsoft faced massive criticism last year after shipping Windows 8 without the Start button — prompting third parties to create replacements (like Start8 and Classic Shell) — so this is a welcome change. Stay tuned for Build 2013 (the company’s developer conference) which starts Wednesday in San Francisco — we’re likely to find out more about Windows 8.1 and the Start button in short order.
