Vertu’s Perry Oosting steps down as CEO, replaced by CMO Max Pogliani

Vertu's Perry Oosting steps down as CEO, replaced by CMO Max Pogliani

According to a statement we received earlier, Vertu’s Perry Oosting (pictured left) has stepped down after his successful four year stint as President and CEO, though he’ll continue to invest in the company. Despite the relatively short run, the Dutch exec oversaw Vertu’s departure from Nokia and subsequently launched the company’s first-ever Android device, the Ti. Little is known about the reasons behind this change, but judging by Oosting’s considerable knowledge of the luxury goods market, he’ll have plenty of options for his next move.

The luxury phone maker will now be led by CMO Massimiliano “Max” Pogliani (pictured right), who’s probably best known for building up Nespresso, Nestlé’s premium coffee brand, prior to joining Vertu last November. Pogliani will be assisted by ex-Jimmy Choo COO Jonathan Sinclair, who joined Vertu this month under the same title. Press release after the break.

Facebook Graph Search Let Dev Scrape Thousands of Public Phone Numbers

It looks like all our Graph Search privacy concerns weren’t just the ravings of a paranoid, tinfoil-hat-wearing lunatic. Using Facebook’s new comprehensive search tool, a tricksy little dev was able to compile a database holding thousands of Facebook users’ personal phone numbers.

Don’t try shaking this robot ape off your car

Monkey business: The iStruct Demonstrator won’t topple on a shifting surface.

(Credit: Screenshot by Tim Hornyak/CNET)

Here’s something I would totally sic my BigDog on, were I lucky enough to own one: a robot ape that can walk around on four legs and may one day stand up on two.

Researchers at Germany’s DFKI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, have been working on what they call the iStruct Demonstrator.

Its purpose is unclear, but with backing from Germany’s Space Agency and its application being described as “space robotics,” I can only speculate. Planet of the robot apes, perhaps?

Weighing only 40 pounds and powered by lithium-polymer batteries, iStruct is laden with force sensors and accelerometers to keep it moving steadily.

What Does 200 Calories Look Like?

The answer to the question of how much can you eat of different foods before you hit 200 calories varies, depending what you’re consuming. Two hundred calories is a whole lot of apples, but less than half of a Big Mac. It’s a plate full of broccoli, but more like a spoonful of peanut butter. But it’s a lot easier to understand what that really means when you actually see the food in front of you in this video from ASAP Science.

American Airlines finishes rolling out iPad flight bags

American Airlines finishes rolling out iPad flight bags

Some airlines and aircraft makers have made a big deal of moving to tablet-based flight bags, but few can say they’ve made a complete switch. American Airlines can — it just finished deploying iPad-based kits to all its cockpits, which can use the tablets at every stage of flight. The move lets the carrier ditch paper charts and manuals across the board, with an according round of savings in fuel and weight. Regional partners haven’t made the leap to digital, although that may come soon: American Eagle Airlines will have the choice of using iPad flight bags starting on July 10th. While most of us in the passenger seats will never notice the difference, the shift will likely help American’s bottom line.

Creepy Robot Doll Controlled by Smartphone

Dolls can be creepy. Everyone knows that. But they have just upped the creep factor with this interactive smartphone controlled doll (some images at link NSFW) based on mascot character Mirai Suenaga. Just look at those eyes.

smartphone doll 3

I guess Anime fans will love it, but to me it’s pretty freaky. The doll is going to be 60 cm tall and has been named simply the Smart Doll. Right now it is in the prototype phase. It has soft vinyl skin and 3D printed parts which were duplicated to generate wax clones and copper plated using electroforming. The robotics are all inside.

For movement of the hands, limbs and arms it has 24 small servo motors and hybrid servo motors. The CPU board sits in the doll’s head. It sports Bluetooth, an ultrasound sensor, a visual sensor, acoustic sensor, location sensor and a touch sensor. Somebody out there will no doubt love this doll. Me, I just want to run.
