HP announces Slate 21 AIO, a $400 21.5-inch Android tablet with Tegra 4

HP launches Slate 21 AIO, 215inch Android tablet with Tegra 4

What do you do if your home turf of PC sales is being eroded by tablets? If your answer is “sell tablets as desktops,” then you’re on Meg Whitman’s wavelength. At an event in Beijing, HP announced a 21.5-inch, Android-powered tablet that’s expressly designed as a desktop unit. The HP Slate 21 AIO comes with a full-HD touchscreen and NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 internals, running Android 4.2.2. Prospective owners won’t need to purchase an artists’ easel, however, as there’s a handy rear kickstand that’ll let you stand it upright or at a 30-ish degree angle (pictured after the break), making us hope that its digitizer is sensitive enough for pen-based drawing. There’s no word on pricing or availability, but there’s a press release, translated from Chinese, after the break, if you’d like to know more.

Update: You’ll now find the English-language PR after the break. The unit will launch in the US in September at a starting price of $400.

Parents who sued Apple over inapp purchases can now claim compensation

Apple’s dedicated “in-app purchases litigation administrator” has had a busy time of it. According to CNET, he or she has been emailing updates to the 23 million parents involved in a long-running class action lawsuit over unauthorized in-app bills racked up by their kids in the days before disclaimers and repeated password requests. The emails say that individual claims for compensation can now be sent to Cupertino as per the terms of the original settlement back in February. Disputed purchases under $30 will qualify for a nominal $5 iTunes voucher, while bigger losses may be fully refunded in cash — but only those incurred within a maximum 45-day period. There’s a deadline of January 13th, 2014 for at least some types of claim, by which point Apple’s litigation administrator may well find themselves diverted to another urgent case.

Texas Abortion Bill: Republican Lawmakers Approve Tough New Restrictions

AUSTIN, Texas — Republicans used their majority to cut short debate and give preliminary approval early Monday to some of the toughest abortion restrictions in the country as time was running out on the Texas Legislature’s special session.

Many members of the conservative majority had flyers on their desks that read “Psalm 139:13-14,” which reads in part: “You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Edward Snowden stops off in Moscow, US extradition demand snaps at his heels

Even if he anticipated the risks involved in turning whisteblower, Edward Snowden can’t have imagined the rushed, convoluted journey he’d have to take to avoid the full wrath of the US government. First to Hong Kong; most recently to Moscow, and perhaps soon to Ecuador (via Cuba and Venezuela) where he has apparently made a request for asylum. Strongly worded demands for his capture have followed every step of the way, with the White House National Security Council expressing “disappointment” that Hong Kong allowed Snowden to flee and now urging Russia (which has no formal extradition treaty with America) to “expel Mr. Snowden back to the US to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged.” In an effort to help the fugitive navigate the maze of diplomatic fault lines, WikiLeaks has stepped up to say that its own legal advisors are “escorting” Snowden towards his final destination, likely making use of the knowledge they gained while protecting Julian Assange, and that it sees US efforts to arrest him as an “assault against the people.”
