More on OWN Empower Yourself
Singer/songwriter India.Arie has created songs with messages of empowerment, pride and strength, but despite her music‘s upbeat qualities, the Grammy Award winner hasn’t always felt so positive. Several years ago, a series of physical setbacks, a broken engagement and a cross-country tour left India.Arie exhausted — and at a spiritual crossroads, she recently explained to Oprah during an episode of “Super Soul Sunday.”
In the above video from India.Arie’s conversation with Oprah, the singer says that her deep internal struggle took a serious toll on her physically and emotionally. “One of my oldest friends, he calls me ‘sunshine.’ It was a joke because I was so moody,” India.Arie says. “[But] it just looked like I was moody.”
In reality, India.Arie says something much more profound was going on. “I didn’t have a foundation of well-being. I didn’t like my ‘default setting.’ I just didn’t feel good all the time,” she explains. “I felt like I was always recovering from some sort of battle… I was in a constant state of recovery.”

Throughout her acting career on both the stage and in feature films, Viola Davis has captivated audiences and impressed Hollywood colleagues with award-winning performances. The Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee — only one of 10 African-American women to be nominated for Best Actress — has certainly enjoyed a fruitful career, but Davis recently told Oprah that black actresses still struggle in Hollywood, no matter how powerful or successful they are.
In an upcoming interview for “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” Davis and fellow actresses Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard and Phylicia Rashad speak candidly about the challenges of being African-American women in the entertainment industry. “We’re in crisis mode as black actresses,” she tells Oprah in the above video.
Davis echoes the frequent criticism that Hollywood lacks enough roles for black actresses, but takes the critique a step further. “[It’s] not only in the sheer number of roles that are offered and that are out there, but the quality of the roles,” she says. “The quality — and therein lies the problem.”
Summer Solstice Space PHOTO: Satellite Captures Planet Passing Annual Milestone
Posted in: Today's ChiliBeachgoers, rejoice! The summer season for Earth’s Northern Hemisphere officially began today (June 21) and a U.S. weather satellite has captured a spectacular view of our planet passing the annual milestone.
A photo released by the GOES-13 weather satellite reveals a sparkling blue Earth dotted with clouds to mark the northern summer solstice — the official start of summer in the north. The satellite is operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
“This full-disk image from NOAA’s GOES-13 satellite was captured at 11:45 UTC (7:45 a.m. EDT) and shows the Americas on June 21, 2012,” officials with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., explained in an image description. “This date marks the start of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere, making it the longest day of the year!”
During the summer solstice, the sun appears to shine farthest to the north of the equator, over the Tropic of Cancer, and begins its trip southward. The event marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the start of summer. In the Southern Hemisphere, it marks the start of winter.
For northern observers, the sun’s apparent peak in the daytime sky will gradually grow lower until it reaches its lowest point on Dec. 21, marking the winter solstice and start of northern winter. On Sept. 22, the sun will cross the equator, marking the autumnal equinox and start of the fall season in the north (and spring in the south).
