Veterans Affairs Department Shows Progress On Disability Claims Backlog

WASHINGTON — The Veterans Affairs Department is chipping away at a massive inventory of disability claims for veterans, reducing the number of claims considered backlogged by about 15 percent in recent weeks.

Republican lawmakers are skeptical that the trend will continue, but they’ve been unable to agree on a solution to a problem that has become a major headache for the Obama administration.

Video on Instagram hands-on

Video on Instagram handson

Facebook’s Video on Instagram is undoubtedly riding on Vine’s coattails, but is it any good? We gave the app a quick shakedown on both Android and iOS, and it’s safe to say the answer is “yes.” Basic video browsing and capture are about as seamless as on the Twitter-owned Vine service, with a few tweaks: Instagram won’t auto-loop videos, and those 15-second clips allow for a little more creativity. It’s only once you dive in that you notice the truly noteworthy differences, however, and we’ll explain them in our full hands-on after the break.

Metroid Typography: Code of a Bounty Hunter

Illustrator Josh Mirman takes his word-shaping talents to the Galactic Federation. As he did with Mario and other classic videogame characters, Mirman drew the heroine Samus Aran in his Very Wordy style – her body parts are made of words related to her.

Sprint boosts Clearwire buyout offer to $5 per share, $14 billion valuation

We’re deep into a bona fide bidding war here — Sprint and Dish are both battling for an approximately 50-percent stake in Clearwire, and as of today, that former contestant’s bid makes it the new front runner. To catch you up, last month Dish offered $4.40 per share for Clearwire, following Sprint’s offer of $3.40 per share made way back in December. Now, the carrier has increased its bid to a whopping 5 bucks per share, which values Clearwire at just about $14 billion. (As you can probably imagine, CLWR’s trading price has jumped today to match that new target.) This comes just days after Sprint filed a lawsuit to prevent the other two parties from moving forward. Whether or not CLWR’s spectrum and other assets make it worth that sum is a different story, but Sprint clearly sees some solid value there.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active hands-on (video)

Gaaxy S4 Active

Ah, the Galaxy S4 Active: it’s like the regular Galaxy S4 but, you know, more rugged. It’s actually not a truly rugged device, since it hasn’t been built to meet military specifications, but it’s certainly designed to stand up to slightly more abuse than its non-Active namesake. It is able to survive in up to a meter of water for 30 minutes and sensitive areas, like the micro-USB port on the bottom edge, are protected by rubber flaps. The beefed-up build adds some weight, about three-quarters of an ounce, and we actually find it quite welcome. Where many Samsung handsets can often feel cheap, plasticky and are lighter than they look, the S4 Active actually has a pleasant and natural heft to it. The weight makes the phone feel less fragile than the regular S4 and also delivers a better balance in the hand. We grabbed some hands-on time with it at Samsung’s London event, so dive past the break for our impressions.
