Reeder for iPhone goes free, gets Google Reader alternatives soon

Silvio Rizzi made the iPad and Mac versions of Reeder free to use in the wake of Google’s plans to shut down Google Reader, but he left the iPhone app at its usual $3 price — and its fate in the air. Existing users can now rest easy, as Rizzi has pledged ongoing support for the smaller screen. The current edition of Reeder for iPhone is now free to use, and an already-submitted 3.2 update will bring support for alternative news services like Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler and Fever. Anyone using the iPad and Mac editions will have to be patient, however. Both apps will eventually get the additional news sources, but Rizzi is taking down the existing releases on July 1st to minimize confusion while he works on updates.

Motorsports Team Builds The Homer, Doh!

I wish I could buy this thing. The team at Porcubimmer Motors has created a pretty accurate recreation of The Homer. You might remember it as the car designed by Homer Simpson that brought his brother’s empire crumbling down. It looks great IRL.

the homer 1
This bright green eyesore cost $82,000 to make price tag, but still it is “powerful like a gorilla, but soft and yielding like a Nerf ball.” And that will definitely cost you.

the homer 2

The detail is quite nice – complete with a plastic bubble for your kid. It has fins, giant cup holders, a bowling trophy hood ornament and the horn plays La Cucaracha. Because seriously, whats even the point otherwise?

I’m no sure if there are three horns in the interior — a feature of the original Homer, because “you can never find a horn when you’re angry” — but we’re willing to look the other way, because seriously, look how incredible this thing is. The license plates even read “BORT.” Awesome.

This is a great homage to Homer. You can check out more photos of The Homer here.

Xentry transforms smartphone into electronic door caller display

There is nothing quite like taking something old and fashioning something new and updated out of it with a little bit of extra help from more modern technology, of course. Case in point, U.S. startup Xavage Technologies has decided to create a new kind of smartphone housing that will work in tandem with an app, and has christened it Xentry. Basically, Xentry is capable of transforming an older generation iPhone or even the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate into a door-mounted caller-display, letting you check out who is at the door at the moment, while allowing you to communicate with them via using a corresponding app. Since an older smartphone is used here, you need not worry too much that someone is going to steal a spanking new iPhone 5 from literally your doorsteps, which ought to provide some sense of relief to most of us.

Basically, with the Xentry, your old and retired smartphone will be mounted on the inside of your front door, where there will be a customized peephole attachment which replaces an existing peephole lens, letting the phone’s camera to come into play instead, staring out into the corridor so that you know whether your pizza has come a-knockin’.

The “smart door” system will be able to stream real-time video as well as audio thanks to your home Wi-Fi network, so you need not have to fork out extra each month to have a SIM card working in the door-mounted smartphone. Other than that, there is also the ability to disguise your voice whenever you speak to the the caller at the door, with the added functions of door movement detection via the phone’s gyroscope as an added security measure.

Xavage hopes to raise $200,000 using Indiegogo so that the two Xentry models will be able to enter production, with one of those being specially designed to house old iPhones (3GS/4/4S), while the other is meant for the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate, which was one of the most popular devices Stateside in 2010.

BlueStacks GamePop Mini aims to pick up where original console left off

When a company such as BlueStacks introduces a product with a non-traditional pricing structure (like the one we’re seeing with their gaming console “GamePop”), it’s not the easiest thing in the world for the general public to accept. “You’re giving me a piece of hardware free, but it doesn’t do anything unless I pay a

Try To Resist the Urge to Set This 2000-Log Pyre Ablaze

Building a tower out of Lincoln Logs is one thing. Building a real life, 30-foot high funeral pyre out of actual firewood is a little bit more complicated. With a bit of finesse and a lot of patience, artist Tadashi Kawamata managed to pull off the latter. No smoking in the vicinity, please.

Keychain Space Invaders Puts Whac-an-Alien in Your Pocket

Even in a time where everything from our phones to our watches could easily serve up a classic game of Space Invaders, there’s still something appealing about this miniature keychain version. It actually plays more like a cross between Space Invaders and Whac-A-Mole, but instead of bludgeoning rodents you’re taking out blinking alien invaders that are coming for everyone and everything you hold dear.

PlayStation through the years: Mark Cerny on the PS4’s roots and the brand’s evolution (video)

PlayStation through the years Mark Cerny on the PS4's roots and the brand's evolution video

The genesis story: the long-lead up to every console’s launch usually leaves one in its wake. Typically, we get some sanitized version, appropriately molded by corporate PR and fed to the public with the crust cut off. But when you’re Mark Cerny, lead PlayStation 4 architect, and you’ve literally grown up with the games industry and the PlayStation brand itself, the tale you get to tell tends to be more truthful, mesmerizing, and chock full of the hard knocks that make success stories so great. And that’s just what Cerny delivered at Gamelab in Barcelona this week, recounting the whirlwind career that led him to have the heaviest hand in shaping Sony’s next-gen platform.

Not familiar with the man’s esteemed background? Then sample this bit of historical trivia: Cerny was the youngest Atari employee at age 17 (!). How’s that for inspiring? Oh, and what’s more, Cerny even fesses up to the egotistical attitude that flattened Sony’s PlayStation 3 launch (spoiler alert: it has to do with crushing third-party devs). There’s much, much more insider-y goodness packed into the 45 minute-plus video after the break. Go on, now. Watch it. You’ll be better for it, we promise.
