ESPN 3D to shut down citing ‘limited viewer adoption’, makes room for 4K sports

A lack of interest in 3D viewing at home has claimed one of its first major victims today, as ESPN announced its 3D channel is going to shut down. ESPN 3D launched back in 2010 with coverage of the FIFA World Cup, but it will not make it to the next one, or to see ESPN’s new Monday Night Football deal. In between it’s broadcast everything from golf to the X Games to the NBA Finals, along with college football national championship games and and a one-off news spot on E:60. AT&T’s U-verse dropped the channel in August 2011 after being one of the launch partners, but said it would come back due to a new agreement signed earlier this year. ESPN overcame many technology and cost hurdles to broadcasting 3D over the years, but in the end the chilly reception from the marketplace for 3D at home appears to have been too much to overcome. Another element that likely affected it were recent layoffs by parent company Disney, that Multichannel News reports included some jobs associated with ESPN 3D.

So what’s next for ESPN? According to a statement, “committing our 3D resources to other products and services that will better serve fans and affiliates.” That should include the 4K capabilities planned for its new facility in Bristol, but we’ll have to wait until it opens next year to find out. For now ESPN says it will be ready to provide 3D content again “if or when” the viewing format takes off — the release of another Avatar flick or TVs that don’t need glasses for 3D might help — now the question is if / when other early efforts like n3D and 3net could also be shelved.

Digital Storm VIRTUE suggests mid-tower gaming systems need a steel boost

As the PC gaming rig ecosystem continues to expand, groups like Digital Storm stand to gain largely from those ladies and gentlemen aiming to do two things at once: work with a high-powered computer and keep a low, yet stylish profile. That’s getting pretty darn specific when you consider the start of the gaming PC

Doctor Who Wall Clock Gets all Timey Wimey

I don’t think we’ve ever seen a wall clock in the TARDIS, which is odd since it is a time machine after all. If the Doctor ever did hang up a clock, it would probably look something like this Timey Wimey TARDIS Wall Clock from UnicornEmpirePrints.

timey wimey tardis clock

Naturally, the Timey Wimey Tardis Clock is made in the Gallifreyan style. Of course, Time Lords don’t need any numbers to tell the time.

tardis clock

This wooden clock is painted TARDIS Blue, with a metallic gold backing and is about 8″ tall. It’s selling for $46(USD), which is a whole lot less than buying an entire TARDIS.

The Doctor really might want to think about getting a clock, for the sake of his companions if nothing else. It gets confusing going to the past, the future, sideways…

PlayStation 4’s Shuhei Yoshida on Oculus Rift: We have dev kits, ‘I love it’

Sony Computer Entertainment head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida is a big Oculus Rift fan, it turns out. “We’ve got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it,” he told us in an interview this morning at E3 2013. Whether the PlayStation 4 will support it is another question. “No, it doesn’t,” Yoshida told us. Not yet, that is.

When we asked whether the company’s planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a “No comment” with a big smile. The picture of the retail Oculus Rift is potentially a bit clearer now, especially given this week’s addition of an HD version of the headset. We’ll be sure to keep on Sony about Oculus support on the PlayStation 4 as the year goes on.

Mad Catz M.O.J.O. Android gaming console

Just when you thought that the dust had settled at the recently concluded E3 2013 event at Los Angeles, California, along comes Mad Catz’ Android-powered M.O.J.O. micro console which is touted to deliver the mobile Android gaming experience to those of you who have also invested a huge chunk of your spare change to bring home a big-screen TV in order to make your living room keep up with the times. It is said that the M.O.J.O. micro console is capable of packing in the kind of 3D gaming performance that one would not expect in such a tiny box, where it will also establish a direct link to digital storefronts such as Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.

Darren Richardson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mad Catz Interactive, Inc., did share his thoughts on what M.O.J.O. might be able to deliver in the future, “M.O.J.O. is basically a supercharged smart phone with no screen that plugs into your flat screen TV to bring the living room experience to mobile gaming. M.O.J.O. is designed to interact seamlessly with our GameSmart controllers, mice, keyboards and headsets, in fact, the entire eco-system of gaming peripherals. We also want M.O.J.O. to be a truly open platform. People are already comfortable buying games from Google Play, Amazon, TegraZone or any other retailer of their choice. They play those games on their phones and tablets already, and with M.O.J.O., they will be able to play them in the living room at no additional cost. The same approach applies to movies, music and any other digital media. Our focus is on providing the best hardware configured for performance, not forcing people to buy content from us.”

Obviously, it remains to be seen whether the likes of Mad Catz’s efforts in the home console market will bear fruit eventually as the M.O.J.O. rolls out to the targeted markets, considering how the Sony PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One from Microsoft look set to take center stage among high powered consoles in the living room, with Nintendo’s Wii U apparently picking up the scraps from the main table once those two have duked it out with one another in a battle royale.
