Sony to bring original programming to PS4 and PSN

Sony to bring original programming to PS4 and PSN

With its much anticipated PS4 console reveal out of the way, Sony brought out Entertainment head Michael Lynton to talk media services for the platform. When the PS4 launches later this year, gamers will be privy to exclusive, original programming crafted specifically for PSN and made by Sony’s studios. No further details were given on just what the company has in store nor what the pricing model would be (free vs paid?). But like Microsft, Sony’s looking to maximize on its living room position and, of course, that familiar buzz word: corporate synergy.

PlayStation 4 console hardware finally revealed

PlayStation 4 console hardware finally revealed

Well, we know what the controller and the Eye look like, we’ve got all sorts of details about what’s under the hood and we’ve even seen some games in action. What we haven’t seen yet is the PlayStation 4 itself. Well, thankfully Sony didn’t make us wait too long at this year’s E3 before fleshing out those little sneak peaks with a full on reveal. Shocker: it’s all black! Well, almost all black. There is a strip of purple dividing the mostly murdered-out tower. Like the Xbox One it’s a pretty unassuming looking console. Gone are the dramatic swoops and curves of the PS3, and so are just about any obvious buttons. The two halves of the PS4 are slightly offset and angled to create a slightly agressive profile when viewed from the right angle, but mostly it seems designed not to draw attention to itself — pretty much the exact opposite of the last generation of gaming platforms.

The one portion of the device with the Sony and PlayStation logos on it is that glossy “piano black” we’re all familiar with. But, the rest of the device appears to be a matte black which makes the console look serious. And not business serious like a BlackBerry, hostile serious like a knife. As you can see, as with previous iterations, there is a stand for keeping the console upright, should you have more vertical than horizontal space. There’s plenty of images in the galleries below. But, don’t worry, we’ll be back with plenty more once we get to see it in the flesh.

Ian Northcott, English Policeman, Spreads Joy, Joins Buskers On The Street (VIDEO)

When it comes to cops and buskers, this isn’t the type of scene we’re used to seeing here in the U.S.

Police officer Ian Northcott from Birmingham, England, delighted onlookers by grabbing a guitar and joining a pair of street performances for some off-the-cuff Oasis covers — and his impromtu rock show has gone viral.

“It was such a lovely day, everyone seemed happy, it just felt such a natural thing to do,” Northcott told SWNS. “We are always looking for ways to break down barriers between the police and the public and this was one of them.”

Senate Passes Half-Trillion Dollar Farm Bill

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Monday passed a five-year, half-trillion-dollar farm bill that expands government subsidies for crop insurance, rice and peanuts while making small cuts to food stamps.

The bill passed on a bipartisan 66-27 vote. The legislation, which costs almost $100 billion annually, also would eliminate subsidies that are paid to farmers whether they farm or not. All told, it would save about $2.4 billion a year on the farm and nutrition programs, including across-the-board cuts that took effect earlier this year.

Anki, blessed by Apple, takes AI and robotics to consumers

During its WWDC keynote event, Apple introduced the world to Anki, a company that is pioneering consumer products based on the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics.

When Apple turns over part of its oh-so-important Worldwide Developers Conference keynote address to an unknown startup, you can be sure Tim Cook and Co. think they’re dealing with some very cool technology.

That was very much the case with Anki, which was handpicked for a coveted slot as the poster child for what unknown developers can do with iOS. During its time onstage, Anki showed off what at first appears to be a simple toy car racing game, but what in reality might be the most advanced intersection of consumer-grade artificial intelligence and robotics ever.

In an interview in San Francisco a few hours after the keynote address, Anki co-founder and CEO Boris Sofman told CNET that Anki — the company’s name comes from the Japanese word for learning by heart — is in the business of bringing AI and robotics, a combination that has long been the exclusive province of the defense industry, to consumers.

Apple clearly loved what Anki is doing with iOS: Users who buy the approximately $200 product starting this fall… [Read more]
