Facebook announces Android app beta testing program starting June 27th (update: now with links)

Facebook announces beta testing program for Android app updates starting June 27th that's today

Facebook’s always working on improving its mobile apps, and doing so for Android has proven to be a unique challenge. To aid in Android development, Facebook’s starting up a new beta testing program for the main FB app to help identify bugs and get user feedback before each monthly release. You see, Facebook has found that the huge diversity of hardware and OS software in the Android ecosystem makes it difficult to find every bug and issue with new releases when using only internal folks (and their limited number and kinds of devices) as testers. Thankfully, at I/O this year, Google announced a new framework that allows app builders to create a Google Group for beta testers and allow those testers to download beta versions of apps from the Play Store.

Facebook has created just such a group and wants Android users the world over to sign up as beta testers. To get in on the dogfooding action, folks simply need to sign up for the Google group, then opt-in to become a beta tester and head over to Google Play to download the app. Additionally, Facebook has created its own FB group to facilitate discussion between testers and devs, and while it wants folks to join, it’s not a requirement. Once you’re on the app’s beta version, you need only use the app as you normally would. Reporting bugs is easy: just tap the new “Report Bug” icon in the settings menu, and the necessary information will get sent to Zuckerberg’s crew. The best news? The program starts today at noon, and you’ll be able to download the newest Facebook app beta directly.

Spotify confirms plans for original content at press event with Mayor Bloomberg

Spotify confirms plans for original content at press event with Mayor Bloomberg

Spotify held a gathering in its movie poster-lined Chelsea offices this afternoon to announce that it is increasing its presence in New York City. Part of the plan includes a brand new US headquarters on 6th Ave that is several times the size of its current space. Most intriguing, some of the new office will be set aside to “create unique content,” according to Ken Parks, who heads up the company’s NYC office. The mention was brief, and Parks offered little detail about what that content might be, but it’s probably safe to assume that we’re looking mostly at exclusive live performances. For now though, we’ll just have to wait until Spotify settles in at its new digs.

Angry Birds Trilogy slingshots to Nintendo’s Wii U and Wii consoles on August 13th

Angry Birds Trilogy slingshots to Nintendo's Wii U and Wii consoles on August 13th

As if its flock of angry fowl weren’t already near-ubiquitous, Rovio’s today announced an August 13th release date for the Wii and Wii U versions of Angry Birds Trilogy. The Finnish company had previously committed to the two Nintendo ports earlier this year, prompted by the success of the title on the 3DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Rovio’s not just pushing out a repackaged redo, either — this collection bundles the original Angry Birds game with Seasons and Rio, while also adding some new levels. And given the finger-flicking origins of the franchise, gamers will be able to make use of the Wii U’s GamePad for that famed asymmetric play (read: GamePad-only) and touch controls. If you haven’t already exhausted your lust for flipping Rovio’s birds, then the dog days of summer should see you and that Wii U making nice. Of course, by then you could also be flinging zombie-like Pikmin with reckless abandon. What’s a Wii U owner to do?
