If ‘Game of Thrones’ Characters Had Online Dating Profiles

In an alternate universe, the characters from Game of Thrones are all alive and kicking. Imagine if they took a break from all that scheming and fighting and decided to live normal lives like ours.

I don’t think they’ll have much difficulty finding mates of their own, but if they ever decided to try online dating, then Team Pwnicorn has got them covered.

Game of Thrones Online Dating Profile

Game of Thrones Dating Profiles” is the newest series by Team Pwnicorn and it’s hilarious, as most of their parodies often are.

Don’t count any of the characters out, because even The Wall has a profile made up especially for him/her/it. You can check out the rest of the profiles in the gallery below.

Anchor is like Facebook for the workplace, launches today on iOS and the web (video)

Anchor is like Facebook for the workplace, launches today on iOS and the web (video)

We don’t usually cover business software around these parts, but Anchor, a social networking app launching today on iOS, goes out of its way to look like a regular app. The brain child of a former GM of Flickr and ex-VP at AOL, it’s sort of like Facebook, in that it allows coworkers to join groups, post status updates, upload photos (complete with filters) and like each other’s activity. (In lieu of a thumbs up, you give someone a rock-on sign.) It also has built-in chat and contact cards, so in theory you could use it as a one-stop shop for communicating with coworkers instead of cobbling together various other apps.

You could even compare it to Yammer, the social network eventually bought by Microsoft, except Anchor’s co-founders say the app is more about coworkers bonding with each other, than necessarily being productive. (Imagine that!) Again, it’s available today for iOS (and the web too), with free lifetime membership if you get it before September 25th. It’s also coming soon to Android and Google Glass, we’re told. With no commitment you should give it a try — the UI is extremely slick — though we have to wonder if it’s really that big a faux pas to friend your coworkers on Facebook. After all, who’s afraid of the occasional like from Tim Stevens?

PayPal Galactic arrives to address the pressing issue of paying in space

PayPal Galactic arrives to address the pressing issue of paying in space

Space tourism is coming, and it ain’t gonna be cheap. The question is, how are the rich folks aboard such craft going to pay for… stuff? Since weighty cash is a non-starter, Paypal has unveiled the PayPal Galactic initiative with SETI and the Space Tourism Society to prepare for the future of extra-planetary commerce. It’ll be launched today at noon EST via livestream (see the More Coverage link) by none other than astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who said that future trips to the moon or Mars will require “as many comforts from home as possible, including how to pay each other.” PayPal worked with SETI to hatch the project, which will address meaty issues like a standard space currency, the risk of space fraud and dealing with customer support issues. (Sorry, space customer support issues.) We’re pretty sure the conversation won’t involve how to pay aliens, but as part of the Galactic launch, PayPal will also announce a new crowdfunding campaign on FundRazr to aid SETI. That’ll help the ET-seeking outfit with its astrobiology and radio astronomy research and, hopefully, keep its dishes pointed skyward, so maybe one day we can horse-trade with the Ferengi.

Should Architects Boycott Building “Supermax” Prisons?

Should Architects Boycott Building "Supermax" Prisons?

There’s no question that solitary confinement—the nebulous, undefined, and largely undocumented practice that Amnesty International, the NYCLU, and the UN call torture—can cause horrific psychological damage to prisoners. But are the architects who build these structures responsible for them?

TWC Is Installing Another 1000 Free Wi-Fi Hotspots in Manhattan

We’re not always the biggest fans of Time Warner Cable; it’s unreliable, expensive, and they don’t seem to care two hoots about improving it. But we applaud the company’s plan to beef up the free Wi-Fi coverage it offers customers—especially in the congested airspace of New York. Beyond the 1700 hotspots already out there in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, the company will have 1000 ready to go in Manhattan by mid-July. [TWC]

Verizon reportedly offers more than $600 million to buy Wind Mobile

Wind Mobile store

Verizon’s curiosity about entering the Canadian market could represent more than just a brief fascination: Reuters claims that Big Red has made a “tentative” bid for Wind Mobile. While the exact price would depend on what Verizon finds in Wind’s accounting books, the estimated value ranges from $600 million to $800 million. Neither party is commenting on the rumor, although Verizon may still be open to alternative deals — it supposedly approached Mobilicity about a potential acquisition. Verizon will likely need permission from both the Canadian government and Vodafone to make any takeover attempt official, but the reported bidding suggests that the company is willing to brave the gauntlet for some 700MHz spectrum and a presence up North.
