Plastic iPhone appears with FCC markings

The plastic iPhone has leaked enough times now that there’s nothing particularly unique about another leaked image – except for the one that leaked on Weibo today showing FCC markings on the back of the shell. Previous leaks of the handset have shown the same design, but only with the Apple and iPhone logos.

The design of the handset featured in the image is the same as the one we’ve seen several times now, not the least of which was the gallery that appeared comparing the plastic model to the iPhone 5. The speaker holes, microphone, and such are the same, with the only notable difference being metal edging around the headphone and lightning ports.

Unfortunately, no details about the handset was provided with the Weibo post, but the image is interesting nonetheless. According to a leak that surfaced earlier this month – also on Weibo – the plastic iPhone will be available in two models, both of which look the same but feature different hardware and will come in at different price points.

Reportedly, the lesser of the two models is codenamed Zenevo, and will feature a Samsung H5P dual processor and 1GB of RAM, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 and FDD 4G connectivity. The other model, according to tipsters, is codenamed Zegato/Bertone and will feature an H6P processor and 1GB of RAM, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 and TDD 4G LTE support.

Also leaked today was a rumor that the handset would be announced on September 6, but word has surfaced since then stating this isn’t the case. As with all the rumors, take it all with a grain of salt. Check out the timeline below for more rumors that have cropped up on recent weeks.

iPad 5 specifications leaks produce HD mock-up

With the iPad 3 – aka the Retina display-toting iteration being taken-over in silence by the iPad 4, what with its first implementation of the Lightning port, the 5th generation appears to be aiming for a whole new form factor. What we’re seeing this afternoon is a series of mock-ups of this new device based on previous specification sheets leaked several weeks ago. In short – this device is not just short, but thin and a bit smaller around the edges, too.

Here you’ll find the iPad 5th generation mock-up (we can’t be clear enough at this point that this isn’t the real deal, it’s just an artist rendering) to take on a form not unlike the iPad mini. Its edges are rounder than its predecessor, its body is significantly smaller in both height and width, and it seems to be a bit thinner, as well.

For whatever reason the creator of this model didn’t see fit to compare it to the 4th generation iPad, instead sticking with the last model to use the original 30-pin dock, but no matter: it’s effectively the same. Here you’ll also see that this 5th generation iPad works with a screen size the same as its predecessor, and while no data thus far has suggested a change in screen resolution, based solely on the panel included on the Nexus 7 reboot this week, a boost may be ready to hit.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see what we’ve seen of this next-generation machine over the past few weeks. It’s likely to launch later this year – probably before the end of summer, but you never know! This series of images comes from notorious device rendering artist Martin Hajek, delivered through C Technology.

Google’s still working on a Glass development kit, suggests devs use Android SDK for now

Google announced at its I/O event in May that a Glass Developer Kit is on the way so devs can build more advanced apps for its headset than the Mirror API supports, but it’s still not quite ready. In a post on Google+, team member Alain Vongsouvanh encouraged developers to use the current Android SDK (API level 15) to try out ideas. The team has also posted code samples with examples like a stopwatch, compass and level, and says devs can access the device’s accelerometer and play media. If you’re ready to get to work all the necessary info is linked in the post, we hope to see the fruits of such labor in the Play store very soon.

Apple’s developer center comes back online after weeklong overhaul

Apple's developer center comes back online after weeklong overhaul

While most of you are fixing to shut things down for the weekend, Apple’s developer portal is waking up after a weeklong hiatus. If you’ll recall, Apple affirmed that its dev center was hacked last week while simultaneously announcing a system overhaul. Now, however, things seem to be back in action, with little to no consumer-facing changes to the site itself. If we had to guess, we’d say the bulk of the tweaks have happened behind the scenes. With that, we invite you to return to your regularly scheduled coding.
