It seems every six months or so these photos of Marilyn Monroe from World War II make the rounds on the good ol’ internet machine. At the time they were captured in 1944 she hadn’t yet taken the name Marilyn Monroe, nor had she dyed her curly locks blonde. She was simply known as Norma Jeane Dougherty and worked in a factory in Van Nuys, California. David Conover, the Army photographer who snapped these shots is credited with "discovering" her, as she soon went on to fame and fortune. But there’s one detail about these photos that rarely seems to gets mentioned: Marilyn Monroe, the future sex symbol that would set a generation’s heart aflutter in the postwar era, is assembling a drone.

Following a successful trial rollout at 17 stores in Boston, Starbucks has decided to join up with Powermat to bring the company’s wireless charging tech to Silicon Valley. The first installation will be completed this Sunday, at a store in San Jose, with up to 10 area locations set to be online before the end of August. Powermat President Daniel Schreiber explained that Silicon Valley was selected in order to boost the technology’s exposure among key industry players — AT&T has already confirmed that several of its smartphones will be compatible with the PMA standard in 2014, but the alliance needs event more support in order to grow momentum. The next logical step for this partnership would be for Powermat to sell coffee-resistant charging cases in Starbucks stores, of course, though neither company has made any announcements to that effect.

You’ll be seeing a lot of Samsung Galaxy Note III tips and rumors over the next few weeks, (if this past week is any indicator), so in preparation, today’s relative solidification of at least one model should provide a good basis for your exploratory readings. What you’re going to see in the Samsung Galaxy Note III according to two sources speaking from across the pond this morning is a 5.7-inch panel with a lovely 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution – that’s the same amount of pixels as the Samsung Galaxy S 4 spread out across a bit more screen real estate.
Over at Samsung Updates, editor Adam Lange reveals the first appearance of the Samsung N900, aka the device code for the Galaxy Note III as found at UAPROF. This appearance is joined by a host of carrier editions similar to what we’d seen earlier this month. This same source confirms the display resolution as well as the CPU – likely pointing toward the Exynos 5 Octa upgrade Samsung spoke of earlier this week.
This code reals, on the other hand, that the Galaxy Note III will be appearing with more than one iteration in its processing architecture, likely appearing also with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 in an LTE-Advanced edition. Based on our chat with Qualcomm yesterday, we’re to understand that the Snapdragon 800 will be working with multi-region LTE support as an up-front solution, this quite possibly providing Samsung with a way to reach multiple international markets with a single SKU.
On another hand still is the fact that we’re also seeing different codes for AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint for the USA, along with at least two more carrier variants beyond the first two international models, one for Exynos, the other for Snapdragon 800. It should also be obvious by now that the Galaxy Note III will be coming with a next-generation S-Pen as each of the previous machines have arrive with, as well as Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
Over at MK News, they say that the Samsung Galaxy Mega lent some insight for Samsung into the possibilities of bringing another two sizes of displays – 6.3 and 5.8 – to the market for the Galaxy Note. Also having tested a 5.99-inch iteration of the Galaxy Note III, this tip says Samsung stuck with the 5.7 in the end as the ideal state of the machine.

Connected gizmos for dogs are having a moment, thanks to the likes of FitBark and other canine activity trackers. But here’s a connected gadget designed for dog owners to interact with their pet, rather than keep tabs on its health. Indeed, overuse of the PetziConnect’s treat dispenser feature may require some kind of health monitoring tech so push the treat button with caution.
Fortunately PetizConnect has other functions, that do not rely on treats to make pet and pet owner happy. Specifically it includes a wireless HD camera and a microphone so that pet owners can remotely summon Fido from his afternoon snooze and then watch as he cocks his head quizzically, wondering why his master’s voice is coming out of a box plugged in the wall.
As well as letting pet owners remotely view and coo at their dogs, and reward interest in a disembodied voice with the occasional tangible treat — dispensed via a button in the Android or iOS app or via a web client — the PetziConnect lets them take photos and record video. Which does, incidentally, beg the question how secure are Petzila’s systems — since once the device is up and running you will have a wireless, Internet-connected eye peeking into your home. Still, it’s designed to be plugged in at dog height so its view of any larger home occupants is probably going to be pretty partial. (Uhh, unless they happen to be rolling around on the floor nearby…)
Petzila was seeking $30,000 via Indiegogo to get the first batch of its connected dog-treating gizmo manufactured but has already passed that goal, with 40 days still left to run on its crowdfunding campaign. PetziConnects — which it says are rugged enough to deal with being mauled by a frenzied Fido hoping to get more treats/liberate its owner from inside the box — are due to ship to backers in December. The current lowest price-tag for crowdbackers wanting to bag a device is $99.
Update: Here’s what a Petzila spokesman had to say on the security point: “PetziConnect is built upon a 128-/256-bit encrypted, proprietary transport layer that blanket secures our three Petzila modules — Portal (mobile or web), Cloud, PetziConnect. In layman’s terms, we built the system bottoms-up to be end-to-end bullet proof secure.”
One of the biggest gripes I have with Monopoly these days is that I don’t want to spend half of my day to dedicate my life to a game where I make believe I am a business tycoon when the only reason why I end up winning is based on pure luck. At thirty-one years old, I’m sure children, teens and young adults have even less time to spend on Monopoly, which is why Hasbro has launched a new version of the game that is said to take a total of 30 minutes to complete, called Monopoly Empire.
