T-Mobile temporarily drops upfront device cost, most models going for no money down

Zero dollars down, Simple Choice and Jump? T-Mobile must be downright crazy! Either that, or it’s a carrier struggling to make a serious impact on a market dominated by two juggernauts — juggernauts who also came out with early upgrade plans of their own within a week of Jump’s debut. T-Mobile’s “back at it,” according to its press material, dropping the entry price on a slew of devices down to zero, effectively spreading out the payments over 24 months. All told, the promotion includes smartphones, tablets and hotspots, and is open to folks who are “well-qualified” (check your credit statements if you have any questions on that front). The deal starts tomorrow and runs for a “limited time.” Unsurprisingly, there’s also some fine print attached (e.g., the 32GB and 64GB iPhone 5 isn’t covered). The carrier’s site can break down all of that for you, and there’s also more info to be had in a press release after the break.

MacBook Pro Haswell refresh tipped for October arrival

The MacBook Air has already seen its glory day with a Haswell upgrade last month at WWDC 2013, but the MacBook Pro was disappointingly skipped over and still has yet to get the new chips. However, it’s reported that we may see new MacBook Pros come our way in October during Apple’s annual fall event.

According to a report from the China Times, says that refreshed MacBook Pros will make an appearance in October, based on reports from sources in Apple’s supply chain. Furthermore, the report suggests that prices will remain the same for the upgraded MacBook Pros, which has been an ongoing trend for Apple.

Intel’s new Haswell processors obviously offer faster speeds than the previous generation, but they also provide lower power consumption, which reduces the juice needed from the battery. We’ve already played around with the new Haswell-equipped MacBook Air, and it certainly boasts quite the battery-life improvement. The MacBook Pros should deliver similar results.

The new Haswell chips also come with support for 4K displays, which not come in handy now, seeing as how Apple doesn’t currently have any 4K products, but it certainly could come in handy down the line.

In any case, while today’s report of an October launch is merely just a prediction based on Apple supply-chain status, that seems like a good bet overall. Apple usually holds an event every fall to announce new products, and this coming fall could be a big one, with rumors of a new iPhone(s), iPad(s), and now MacBook Pros.

Maclocks MacBook Air Lock Bracket Kit introduced

Whenever you go out to your favorite coffee haunt, or are simply chilling out at a bistro or bar that has free Wi-Fi connectivity, surely there are moments when you bring your work along with you. With the MacBook Air from Apple being one of the more popular notebooks to tote around simply because of its super slim design as well as lightweight form factor, it is not a good idea to leave your MacBook Air lying on the table where you are seated (especially if you are alone) while you head off to the washroom to relieve yourself. After all, you can never quite tell just when someone has cast a jealous eye on your MacBook Air and have been looking for an opportunity to relieve you of it when you are not around. Enter the MacBook Air Lock Bracket Kit from Maclocks.

The MacBook Air Lock Bracket Kit works as it says – it is a cutting-edge discreet bracket lock that offers MacBook Air users with an additional and unique method to secure your extremely slim MacBook Air. This is made possible thanks to an inconspicuous super-slim ultra-light solution which will not make your MacBook Air’s sleek design look out of place.

Made out of high-grade aerospace aluminum bracket, it has been specially designed with the patented “Wedge” security slot. The Wedge Security Cable (also touted to come along with the slimmest locking head in the world, and you are definitely free to dispute that claim) will feature a 360-degree rotational locking head which paves the way for a full range of motion, all the while holding the secured device firmly and in place. The super slim bracket measures a mere 1mm thin, and it tips the scales at under 0.1lb, now how about that? You can fasten it to the bottom of the MacBook Air easily using its own original four screw holes. The new MBA Lock Bracket Kit will arrive in 11″ and 13″ sizes, where placing a pre-order for either will cost you $69.95.

Rene must have been super excited when she pulled this thing out of the box, lovingly created by craftyzooprgrl. Also included were nifty Cyberman, TARDIS, and Adipos pins and the weeping angel needle threader you see in the pic.

The strengthening case for a Motorola smartwatch

Motorola already has one smartish watch under its belt, er… wrist in the MotoActv.

Google’s Chromecast and new Nexus 7 tablet have been hogging so much attention the past 24 hours, it feels like something is missing. Ah yes, the Motorola rumor mill!

Never fear, there are more leaks and gossip to report in advance of the next Google hype-fest, set for August 1, when CNET will be on hand for the official Moto X reveal.

In particular, the case for a Motorola smartwatch companion often referred to as the “Moto xWatch” seems to have strengthened, but we may not see it at the Moto X event next week. According to Android blogger and Texan (Motorola has operations in Texas, where the Moto X is being assembled) Taylor Wimberly: “Unverified source tells me moto xWATCH has been shelved for now. No way it gets announced August 1st.”
