Why Facebook’s Mobile Ads Are Working Better Than Google’s

It turns out all those ads cluttering up your Facebook news feed are working just fine for the social media giant.

As the company reported its latest quarterly earnings, what stuck out the most was its success selling mobile ads, those seen by people using Facebook on tablets and smartphones. That group of mobile users has now grown larger than the one looking at Facebook on desktops each day.

Earnings from mobile ads exceeded analysts’ expectations, generating $655.6 million, or 41 percent of Facebook’s advertising revenue — up from 30 percent last quarter.

Google Play Games app now available

We knew the Google Play Games app would be arriving in the Play Store some time today, and now it is officially available for download. The same app will come pre-loaded on the newly announced Nexus 7 tablet, and will serve as a central hub of sorts for viewing game achievements, leaderboards, checking out what friends are playing, and all that good stuff.

Capture

Word surfaced about the Google Play Games app from Google at its event earlier today, with the news perhaps being drowned out by the excitement surrounding the new Nexus 7 and Android 4.3. As its name suggest, this is a dedicated gaming app, and makes it easier to stay on top of one’s Android gaming habit, and makes it a bit easier for friends to check out what you’re up to.

The app is only 2MB in size, and is available for devices running Android 2.2 and higher. Google is hailing its biggest features as a unified system of sorts that brings all the aspects of Android gaming together. With the app, users can discover new games by seeing what their friends are playing, and vice versa.

Players can play games with their friends, and see all the pertinent details related to that. The Google Play Games app can also be used to jump into multiplayer games, and to compare scores with other gamers playing the same app. There’s also achievement tracking, letting gamers see, for example, what they’ve unlocked for a particular game, and what achievements are left to earn.

In case you missed it, the Google Play store was also in news today for adding a textbook category, giving it a further push into the educational market. The category allows students to either rent or purchase textbooks, depending on need and availability.

Larry Summers Fed Nomination Would Bypass ‘Steady’ And ‘Right’ Janet Yellen

WASHINGTON — Leading Democrats are struggling with the idea that President Barack Obama may actually nominate economist Larry Summers to head the Federal Reserve. If he does, he’d pass over Fed Vice Chair Janet Yellen, who saw the warning signs of the 2008 financial collapse, for Summers, whose deregulatory advocacy as treasury secretary contributed to it.

Summers’ critics typically cite his role in the 1999 repeal of Glass-Steagall financial regulations and the 2000 deregulation of the derivatives market as key contributors to the financial collapse of 2008. But Yellen accurately read signs of bank trouble before the crash, when she served as president of the San Francisco Federal Reserve.

“She’s steady, she’s been right and she hasn’t ignored the real economy and the role of employment,” former Rep. Tom Perriello (D-Va.), now president of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, said Wednesday. “The reputation she has is as someone who has certainly been more interested in the full employment side of the mission than just the anti-inflationary side.” Yellen pushed for transparency at the Fed before it was popular and ate with fellow workers in the cafeteria, Perriello noted.

Kaleidescape revamps Cinema One movie player with easier setup in mind

Kaleidescape intros revamped Cinema One movie player

Kaleidescape’s Cinema One player has been many things to movie buffs, but “accessible” isn’t one of them — limited distribution and an emphasis on custom installs has kept it out of reach. The company is widening that scope with a redesigned Cinema One that’s almost as easy to install as an off-the-shelf Blu-ray player. It’s a tad more advanced than that, of course. The Cinema One integrates with most home automation systems, and it stores up to 100 Blu-ray quality movies (including Kaleidescape Store downloads). Viewers who need more storage can attach a second player or the older DV700 Disc Vault. The revamped Cinema One is still expensive at $3,995, but it’s at least easier to buy than its predecessor — Kaleidescape is selling the new media server as a walk-in purchase at Magnolia and other retail stores.
