Bentley SUV confirmed for 2016 arrival, 570 HP engine in tow

Bentley may be known for its over-luxurious cars, but the company has confirmed plans that they’ll be producing their first-ever SUV, and will be the fourth model that the car company produces. However, they’re not just stopping there. Bentley wants their new SUV to be the most powerful SUV on the market, so their dropping in a 570 HP engine.

This means that the yet-to-be-named SUV will be more powerful than Mercede‘s AMG SUVs, as well as Porsche‘s Cayenne Turbo S, both of which top out at 550 horsepower. Bentley expects the SUV to go on sale starting on 2016, meaning that the model year of the new vehicle will most likely be a 2017.

We’ve heard of Bentley’s SUV plans in the past, but it was merely just a concept at that point, called the EXP 9 F. We doubt that will be its official name, and the company even said it hasn’t decided on a name yet for the new vehicle.

Bentley says that customer response to an SUV has been high, and they company is going all-in on the new vehicle, creating over 1,000 jobs in the UK, as well as investing over £800 million over the next three years at the company’s Crewe headquarters for future development of new vehicle models.

The engine that Bentley plans to use in their new SUV is the 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W-12 engine that’s also equipped in several of the company’s other models. This will produce 567 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. As for price, Bentley didn’t say, but it’ll likely cost a couple hundred thousand dollars.

SwiftKey Cloud syncs your keyboard profile, includes trending phrases video

Here’s something we’ve all been wanting for some time. SwiftKey Cloud is launching today with a bunch of new functionality including — you guessed it — cloud backup and synchronization across multiple devices. By keeping your keyboard profile and settings online, you no longer have to re-teach Swiftkey your typing habits if you upgrade to a new tablet or lose your phone. Trending phrases is another new feature which analyzes relevant and localized phrases that are trending on social networks and other media and adds them daily to the keyboard’s vocabulary. It supports US / UK English and eleven other languages at launch, with more coming in the future. Finally, SwiftKey Cloud makes its easier than before to personalize your keyboard by connecting it with your GMail, Facebook, Twitter and now Yahoo! mail accounts. We’ve been using the beta for about a day now and everything’s working as advertised. Check out the gallery below, then it the break for the promo video and PR.

Tvilight Street Lamps Only Light up If Someone’s Around

The streets are often empty in the dead of night, but they’re all still well-lit anyway. That makes sense, because I’d want it to be well-lit in case I find myself walking home in the wee hours of the morning. It’s definitely a huge waste of energy though, because no one’s around to actually make use of that light.

Tvilight BV

A neat concept that aims to solve this problem is Tvilight. Basically, these streetlamps will only light up when someone is around. If its wireless sensors can’t detect any people or vehicles nearby, then the lamps will switch to its dim light mode. The sensors are able to detect how fast a person or object is approaching, so it can flick the lights on quickly as needed.

The Tvilight is expected to cut typical carbon dioxide emissions by 80% and reduce maintenance costs by half. It’s definitely got huge potential for use in streets all over the world. What do you think?

Intel previews 4.5W Y-series Core chips for fanless tablets

Intel fanless tablet

Intel teased us with the prospect of a fanless Haswell chip back at Computex, but it didn’t say just how it would achieve such a feat. Now we know: it’s introducing more energy-efficient versions of the Y-series Core processors that were announced earlier this year. The new chips consume as little as 4.5W in a typical scenario, letting them run in tablets and detachable convertibles without the fans needed by their 6W peers. Don’t expect blistering performance at this reduced power level, however. While Intel isn’t divulging clock speeds just yet, the 4.5W Y-series chips have the same 11.5W thermal design power rating as their 6W siblings — they’ll still need active cooling to perform at their best. The company also isn’t providing ship dates or naming customers, although it does promise that the extra-miserly Core CPUs should be available in the “coming months.” We have an idea as to who might be interested.

Your exes to appear on next episode of ‘As the Web turns’

Yes, we’re all here to help.

(Credit: Alwaysanecesity/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

Welcome to today’s psychological survey.

We are here to discover your attitude toward your exes. Yes, we know you have more than one. We’ve heard the number is in the double digits, actually.

So: Do you keep the texts you exchanged? Are you still Facebook friends? If you’re not, do you creep around social media to see what they’re doing and whom they’re seeing?

Do you occasionally sit there late at night with your new (and perhaps temporary) lover, secretly pleased that your ex just texted you, wondering how you are?

I am asking because I’ve just read (twice) a quite stunning and revelatory piece by Maureen O’Connor in New York Magazine.

In it, she explains that times have changed, that relationships are not quite what they used to be, and that the way people now look at their exes has been altered — literally.

Technology, you see, has made the things we have done in the past and the people we’ve shared those experiences with far less forgettable — even when we thought they were forgettable at the time.

Ziphius gets fully funded on Kickstarter, expected to ship in March

Now that’s what we like to see. Our first-ever Insert Coin: New Challengers winner has secured full funding over on Kickstarter — and just in the nick of time. With just over a day to go before the end of its fundraising period, Ziphius has managed to pass its lofty $125,000 goal. That means we can expect to see the cool little aquatic drone shipping to backers in March of next year, just in time for the warm weather. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that you too can live the crowdfunding dream. We’ve opened up entries for our second Insert Coin competition, as of late last month. It may not get you all the way to a final product, but with $25,000 up for grabs, it’s a heck of a head start.

Seeing footage of a nuclear bomb explosion can give you the chills. While we can all fervently hope no new images of mushroom clouds are ever created, there are ways to imagine the swath of destruction left by these powerful weapons. NukeMap3D simulates the effects of nuclear weapons using Google Earth.

The simulator lets you choose from a wide variety of parameters. You can pick the place, choose the size of the bomb, set a viewing location, and even animate the growth of the mushroom cloud. You can also plot the fallout based on wind speed and direction, and estimate the number of casualties.

Moto X Android software features confirmed by DROID lineup

If you’re anxiously anticipating the release of Motorola’s common hero smartphone Moto X and like the idea of confirming specifications before the device itself is revealed in full, today is your lucky day. What we’ve seen today in the reveal of three new Motorola smartphones with DROID branding for Verizon is the re-appearance of a few features that’d previously been tipped for the Moto X. They’ll carry ever-so-slightly different user interfaces, but will they keep the same Android-deep features?

imaga

Gesture to Launch Camera

As we saw in a leaked video earlier this month and as indicated by Motorola’s own Dennis Woodside back in May, Moto X will be able to detect when you take it out of your pocket, then will be able to activate its built-in camera with a flick of your wrist.

“The [Moto X] knows when it is in my pocket, it knows when I take it out of my pocket. I might want to do something, I might want to take a picture, so it fires up the camera.” Dennis Woodside for Motorola

flicker

Today Verizon’s new DROID line hints at a similar bit of functionality. They suggest that you’ll be able to “quickly launch the 10-megapixel camera with a simple gesture”, just the same. This indicates that there are two possibilities, the first being Google adding this flick feature to Android itself, therefor moving it to their Nexus line not too far into the future. The second possibility is that this feature will be Motorola’s own, and will only appear on Motorola smartphone (until hacking can commence.)

Camera Interface

This morning we saw a leak of what was called a Moto X camera interface. There we saw what very well could appear on a Nexus device and not look out of place in the least. Many of these same images appeared on-screen at this week’s Verizon event introducing the phones, shown as Motorola’s new UI for cameras on all devices.

Screen-Shot-2013-07-23-at-11.38.40-AM-568x500

camera

It’s shown again on Verizon’s purchase page for the DROID MINI in short. They’ve also reminded us there that the device “helps you take better photos in low-light environments” – that kind of power comes from the device’s processor, but it’s very possible the same claims will be made of the Moto X.

Always On Voice Commands

Back in June of 2013, Qualcomm (with LG) revealed that they’d be bringing on “Always On Voice Commands” in their next-generation processing architecture. We’ve heard from Qualcomm earlier in the year that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 brought this ability natively, then we heard about Android’s Open Mic.

goodmorning

It was leaked as part of the hands-on video shown earlier this month of the Moto X, and here once again we’re seeing the exact same user interface appearing on the new DROID lineup.

“When Droid Mini is on, it’s ready. Command this smartphone without touching it, even when it’s asleep. Use voice commands to get directions or open a Mobile Hotspot.” – Verizon

So don’t expect that bit of functionality to be limited to Moto X, not by any measure. Instead we may very well see not one whole heck of a lot of Motorola-centric software appearing on the Moto X when it’s formally revealed on August 1st at all. Not unless Google has something up their sleeves for reveal tomorrow morning!

fb

And don’t forget that fancy super-minimal notifications screen while the device is sleeping, either.

“The low-power notification system displays alerts so you can avoid constantly waking your phone.” – Verizon

We’re to understand that Motorola has formulated a way to only light up a portion of the display to show these notes, saving energy as they do so. Stay tuned!
