A Norse Town Has Built an Artificial Sun to Light Up Its 5-Month Night

The extreme far north (or south) isn’t the only place on Earth that spends the winter locked in perpetual darkness. Beginning in September and ending in March, the Norwegian town of Rjukan is cast into a perpetual shadow. But no longer: This month, engineers are completing The Mirror Project, a system that will shed winter light on Rjukan for the first time ever.

Belkin ships WeMo Light Switch for $50, launches matching Android app

Belkin ships WeMo connected light switch for $50

Belkin promised a simple approach to connected lighting when it unveiled the WeMo Light Switch back at CES, and the company is making good on its word by releasing the switch today. The WiFi-based controller is now available both online and at retail shops for $50. It isn’t arriving alone, either — Belkin is simultaneously launching the finished version of its free WeMo app for Android to complement the existing iOS release. If you’d rather have smart switches than smart light bulbs, the new WeMo hardware awaits at the source link; the companion Android app should be available shortly.

Nokia Lumia 625 detailed in full leak with 4.7-inch display

It’s one day early and certainly “Something Big” as Nokia suggested just this morning: the Lumia 625, complete with 4.7-inch display. This device will be working with a 4.7-inch IPS display at 800 x 480 pixels, surprisingly, this suggesting that – as it was guessed – this device will be headed for a more budget-minded crowd.

Nokialumia625_specs_puhelinvertailu

This device looks to be working with a 5-megapixel camera at its back, a VGA web camera at its front, and 4G LTE – but only for Europe at the moment. If we do see this device delivered to the USA – and it’d be surprising, given the specifications we’re seeing here – it’ll be later in the year with a slightly different number after its Lumia brand name.

Also under the the hood you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor – dual-core paired with 512 MB of RAM. Here you’ve got a 2,000 mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and a bit of an off-red case color that matches the Nokia teaser from earlier today. Look like a winner to you?

Make sure you keep your wits about you when you decide to roll with this particular looker. While it may seem like a beauty from afar, it’s an odd combination of large display and extra-low display resolution that’ll have the market baffled. Unless, of course Nokia brings it to a market where the Lumia 925 doesn’t exist, and they’ve never seen the HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S 4 in action.

Google Cloud Print gets Windows compatibility outside of Chrome

Image

It should come as no surprise that Google brought Cloud Print to its own offerings first, but now the service is ready to spread its wings a bit. The company announced today that Cloud Printer is coming to Windows apps like Adobe reader, letting you bypass the necessity for Chrome. Using the driver, you’ll be able to see an entry for the service in your usual drop down of networked printers and, if all goes according to plan, print to your heart’s content. More info on the offering can be found in the source link below.

The Invention of Jaywalking Was a Massive Shaming Campaign

The Invention of Jaywalking Was a Massive Shaming Campaign

Before the invention of the car, jaywalking wasn’t a recognized concept. Want to get across the street? Then just walk across the street—nobody’s going to stop you. But the rise of the automobile posed a new problem for people of the early 20th century. While the median state-designated speed limit for American cities was just 10 miles per hour in 1906, the pace of American streets soon increased enough that people who wanted to cross them were suddenly putting themselves in harm’s way. So cities across the U.S. started to regulate where and when pedestrians could cross. You can see the faint pedestrian crosswalk lines painted on the street in the scene below from Detroit circa 1917.

DROID ULTRA leaks again, racing stripe intact

If you were worried about the legitimacy of the leaked image shown last week depicting the DROID ULTRA complete with bright red stripe down its back, you weren’t alone. What’s appeared today, however, is a lovely bit of leak showing the same unit, this time with a much more photographically sound angle on it – that’s a Limited Edition of the unit if ever we’ve seen one. Here the DROID ULTRA comes out to play for Verizon employees – or the very lucky.

motorola-droid-ultra-limited-505x650

This machine is aimed at being the upgrade of the DROID RAZR HD, the smaller of the two RAZR devices in the carrier’s current Motorola-made smartphone lineup. There’s also the DROID RAZR M, of course, but this is in terms of battery capacity. Here the DROID ULTRA carries what’s almost certainly an upgraded higher-definition display and an expanded bit of ruggedness as well.

This variant of the DROID ULTRA suggests that though both Motorola and Verizon will be going all-in when it comes to the Moto X, they’re still not forgetting their virtual handshake in the DROID brand lineup. This version of the machine could also very easily be the DROID MAXX, the larger of the two full-sized smartphones as far as battery capacity, this based on past iterations of this special edition red stripe – MAXX it’s always been.

This machine – minus the stripe – will quite likely be revealed at the Verizon event coming tomorrow – that’s July 23rd of this month, mind you. Have a peek at the DROID timeline below to catch up on what this reboot of the DROID series means for you and your decisions in Verizon-bound smartphone upgrades soon. Choices await!

Samsung curved OLED TV arriving in the US after Korean release

Both LG and Samsung seem to be doing some direct battling with their new OLED displays, which isn’t surprising at all and quite expected really. Samsung will begin selling its new curved OLED HDTV in the US starting sometime this week, with LG barely beating them out with theirs releasing today. The best part is, Samsung’s offering also has the same exact price tag.

samsung_curved_oled_tv_live_4

Samsung’s OLED TV will sell for $15,000 in the US at some point this week, according to a listing on Value Electronics. The retailer says that shipments of the new curved OLED television from Samsung are on their way, and they believe they’ll be the first retailer to sell the TV, with availability coming later this week.

We caught Samsung’s curved OLED TV at CES 2013 back in January when the company began showing off the display, and it was obviously something impressive to look at. OLED technology provides a much better picture than LED and Plasma, thanks to the even darker blacks and vibrant colors, not to mention the low-power capabilities.

Samsung will offer two versions of the new OLED display, one which is curved and the other which is a flat design, the latter of which hasn’t been detailed yet as far availability is concerned, but we’re guessing that model may be a bit cheaper than its curved brethren.

No word on what other retailers will be selling the new television, but we’re guessing many of the big stores will carry the new curved display. $15,000 is a hard pill to swallow, but there’s bound to be some HDTV enthusiasts out there willing to spend that kind of money for the best picture possible.

These Internet-Themed Crayons from the 90s Are Hilariously Dated

A long, long time ago, in a land where people had yet to even ponder words like "Reddit" and "Twitter," a bright-eyed arts and crafts company decided to embrace this crazy thing called the information superhighway. The year was 1997, and that company was Crayola. The results are absolutely glorious.
