Ubuntu Edge dual-boots Linux and Android, needs funding help

In an effort to create the first smartphone that can dual-boot both Linux and Android, Canonical is looking to raise money on Indiegogo in order to make such a thing happen. The phone would run a version of Ubuntu Touch, as well as a version of Android, although it’s not said exactly what version the phone will be running.

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 12.00.07 PM

Perhaps one of the most interesting facets about the crowdfunding campaign is that Canonical is going try and raise $32 million in just 31 days, which they say is the biggest monetary target ever for a crowdfunding campaign. It’s a lofty goal, and if the campaign doesn’t meet $32 million, the project won’t happen, and Canonical will go back to making Ubuntu Touch only.

The device itself, called the Ubuntu Edge, will come with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It’ll be topped off with a 4.5-inch 720p display covered in pure sapphire crystal, which Canonical says is “the hardest natural substance after diamond.” As for the processor, the company only says that it’ll be “the latest” and “fastest.”

The Edge will also 4G connectivity, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0. It’ll also be able to hook up to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor in order to use the device as a full-fledged desktop computer. However, it’s not said if Android will work in this mode.

Of course, we’ve seen Ubuntu Touch in action in the recent past back in February. The interface on the Edge looks to be the same as we’ve seen in the past. As for the phone itself, the Edge is a simple-looking device with not much going on. There looks to be a power button at the top and a volume rocker on the side. There is no home button, however, which doesn’t seem to be a huge deal, as most of the navigation will obviously be done with the touchscreen.

eBay debuts desktop version of eBay Now, service coming to more cities this summer

eBay debuts desktop version of eBay Now, service coming to more cities this summer

eBay’s same-day delivery service has been highly focused on mobile since its very early days, but now the internet giant is looking to change that. Starting today, eBay Now will be available on the desktop, giving shoppers an alternative to using the site on their iOS or Android device. Naturally, this means users can still make the same purchases and have them delivered in a speedy fashion, only they’ll be able to do so on a larger canvas that’s optimized to display things like big imagery, reviews and which stores are most popular.

In addition, the company’s VP of Mobile and Local, Dan Glasgow, told us the service is, as of now, expanding its NYC coverage to Brooklyn and Queens, as well as some more places around the Bay Area. eBay also let us know Now’s getting ready to launch in Chicago and Dallas “later this summer,” adding that new features are set to debut at around the same time, including one which allows for scheduled deliveries. Still hoping it comes to your city? It may very well happen soon — eBay says it’s excited to keep growing and continue expanding the service.

LEGO Batman Cake: The Block Knight Ices

Fans of the LEGO Batman video games will appreciate the amazing amount of detail that went into this cake. I mean, we all know Gotham is a crap-hole of a city – despite the fact that Batman has been fighting crime there for like 100 years. He’s doing a great job, obviously. If he were a politician, he would have been fired ages ago. Except maybe in Chicago.

This cake has all of Gotham’s grime. Boards over the windows, trash on the street, grime of course, graffiti and the usual minifigs that you would see in a LEGO Batman game. There’s Catwoman, the Joker, The Riddler, Harley Quinn and of course the dynamic duo.

It was made by cake designer Elisa Strauss of Confetti Cakes for the game’s launch party. Awesome cake, but seriously Batman, Gotham should be crime free by now. You are a billionaire. You have no excuse.

Witness Furby Boom shower, lay an egg, go to the bathroom (video)

Witness Furby Boom shower, lay an egg, go to the bathroom video

Last year, Hasbro reinvented 1998’s hottest stuffed holiday sensation for the early 21st century. Furby got a full-on reboot, bringing improved locomotion, wireless communication, a tablet app and some vaguely creepy glowing eyes to the robotic pet. The toy company opted not to wait another decade and a half for an update, offering up Furby Boom for the world to see today. On the surface, the update looks a fair amount like last year’s model — same moving beak, glowing eyes (with more emotional options) and twitching pointy ears. This time out, however, the company’s offering “six fashion forward patterns” on its fur, including waves and zigzags, with more coming later in the year. Things have been souped up a bit inside, including more on-board storage.

The real upgrades, however, are mostly on the software side of things. The new Furby Boom app, which is coming to iOS and Android, ups the ante for Furby activities. Owners can use it to name their Furby — a name the toy its Furby friends will learn. It also requires some standard pet maintenance, featuring meters for health, hunger, cleanliness and, yes, bathroom breaks. If your Furby gets low on any of the above, you’ll have to help it out. We’ll save the graphic description for the video after the break, because really, why read about a Furby taking a dump, when you can watch it in glorious 720p?

The New SkyDrive Might Be the Best Cloud Storage Yet

SkyDrive in Windows 8.1 has a secret weapon no one’s talked very much about. It’s actually pretty amazing, in that small sort of way that doesn’t change much, but still manages to completely alter how you use something. In fact, it might just make SkyDrive the best cloud service around.

HopStop drops Windows Phone support in wake of Apple acquisition

HopStop for Windows Phone shuts down in wake of Apple acquisition

When tech giants buy developers, they frequently let app support fall by the wayside — and Apple is continuing that trend following its acquisition of HopStop. Windows Phone users can no longer download or run their version of the HopStop app. Instead, the developer is asking them to use the mobile website for directions. Curiously, though, the Android app is still hanging around; Apple isn’t dismissing all competing platforms, like it did after buying Siri. Neither Apple nor HopStop have offered explanations for the move, but it’s clear that Windows Phone users will have to lean on alternatives like Here Transit to plan their daily commutes.

Forza 5 Xbox One install backtracked, won’t require download right away

Last week, it was said that Forza Motorsports 5 for the Xbox One would require a day-one download that gamers would be required to obtain before they’d be able to play the game. This was confirmed by Turn 10 Studios’ Dan Greenawalt. However, he’s back with a new policy, saying that gamers will eventually need to download the extra content, and they’ll be able to play the game even before downloading said content.

Screen-Shot-2013-05-24-at-9.58.47-AM-copy-580x393

This is certainly good news for those who were planning to buy Forza 5 on release day, as you won’t need to connect to Xbox Live right away before you can start enjoying the game. Gamers will be able to begin playing the game, but in order to get the full experience, you’ll be required to download the additional content.

The download consists of extra cars and tracks, as well as additional Drivatar data that “contains enough Drivatars to cover all difficulty settings.” However, Greenawalt notes that “the vast majority of the launch content is contained on the disc,” meaning that gamers will get to enjoy most of the game without downloading the extra content at first.

Greenawalt continues, saying that “the gameplay is not blocked while downloading the additional content; it’s done in the background just like disc install.” While Drivatar is a huge feature in Forza 5, the disc itself contains some Drivatar data to get you going. For example, “in the beginning of the game, the player will be racing against Drivatars that are contained on the disc and were trained by the [Turn 10 development] team.”

However, gamers will eventually have to connect to the internet to download the additional content, since “deeper areas in the career mode were designed to utilize these additional cars and tracks.” Greenawalt says this is similar to previous version of Forza, in the sense that the games came with additional content that was to be downloaded, on top of the initial disc.
