BlackBerry OS 10.1 MR Update Reportedly Wiping Text Messages

BlackBerry OS 10.1 MR Update Reportedly Wiping Text Messages

A few days ago BlackBerry rolled out a maintenance release update for OS 10.1. The new platform was unveiled earlier this year in January, since then BlackBerry has released three smartphones that are powered by its new BlackBerry 10 platform. The OS 10.1 update itself was released a couple of months ago, the maintenance release brought incremental changes to help users “keep moving.” Many users are now complaining that the update contains bugs that wipe all content from text messages, delete said messages and even block text messaging functionality altogether.

BlackBerry hasn’t acknowledged the issue as yet, so its too soon to say if it has started working on a fix. If you do own a BlackBerry 10 device and have received a notification for this particular OTA update, it is better that you hold off on it. Hopefully the company will release a statement regarding this soon. Different users seem to be affected in different ways by these bugs, the issue doesn’t seem to be widespread or event consistent for all users. BlackBerry is also going to launch its OS 10.2 major update in the coming weeks.

Google bringing faster WiFi to 7,000 US Starbucks stores

Google bringing faster WiFi to 7,000 US Starbucks stores

Google and Starbucks are teaming up to boost WiFi speeds at all 7,000 Starbucks stores in the US. The move, which should be complete within 18 months, is a major loss for AT&T, the chain’s contracted ISP to date. Google claims that you’ll experience WiFi speeds up to 10x faster than what’s currently available, with a 100x boost in Google Fiber cities like Austin, Provo and KC. The rollout will begin in August — if you see “Google Starbucks” as an available SSID, you’ll know your store has been tapped with boosted access.

Street Artist Replaces Erased Work With Stencil of Guy Who Erased It

Street Artist Replaces Erased Work With Stencil of Guy Who Erased It

The work of a street artist is perhaps by definition impermanent; you create, it’s found out, it’s erased, you move on. Or, if you’re a young man who goes by the name of DS, you spot the guy who’s erasing your work, photograph him, and come back later to immortalize him as a stencil in the exact same place.

John McCain On Sequestration: ‘The Worst Vote I Have Cast In Many Years’

When the Obama administration and congressional Republican leadership crafted the policy of sequestration in the summer of 2011, the idea was relatively simple: Onerous budget cuts that affected the top priorities of each political party would never take place because it was in the interest of both parties to avert them.

A so-called super committee tasked with coming up with a large deficit and debt reduction proposal was supposed to dispatch with sequestration quickly. They failed. The House GOP conference passed its own bill, but it was too one-sided to pass. The end of 2012, the deadline at which sequestration would go into effect, was supposed to be another galvanizing event. But that too failed to spark action, save a short-term delay to continue talks. And eventually, this spring, sequestration was implemented.

Now, in retrospect, even the authors of sequestration concede that they oversold the willingness and ability of lawmakers to come together on a replacement. And in an interview with The New Republic, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) placed it among the biggest legislative regrets of his career.

Microsoft Office Comes To Android — But Tablet Owners Will Have To Wait

NEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft is bringing a pared-down version of its Office software to Android phones, but it won’t work on Android tablets just as it doesn’t on iPads.

The software will be available starting Wednesday. It requires a $100-a-year subscription to Office and won’t be sold separately.

The new offering follows the release of an iPhone version in June and brings an Office app to phones running the most widely used operating system on new smartphones.
