20 Iconic Weapons From the Most Legendary Gunslingers in Film

Even for people who are vehemently anti-gun, there’s something fun about seeing how filmmakers and writers imagine weapons of the future, regardless of how unrealistic they are. Federico Mauro, an Italian art director, has taken it upon himself to make them real.

Tim Cook meets with China Mobile in Beijing

After a less than spectacular couple of months for sales in the Greater China area, Tim Cook paid a visit to Beijing to speak with China Mobile chairman Xi Guohua. Apple’s CEO was there to “discuss matters of cooperation,” according to Reuters, a conversation that no doubt included bringing iPhones and iPads to the the carrier’s massive subscriber base. Apple has yet to issue a comment on the discussion, but a partnership could mean huge numbers for Cupertino, delivering iOS products to the mobile provider with the world’s largest subscriber base.

Genesis Arcade Ultimate Portable Console

Do you remember growing up in the 1980s and the early 1990s? The Nintendo NES did take the world by storm, where it popularized the home videogame console genre, sending the Atari 2600 into the consumer electronics retirement home along the way. One thing about the NES was its library of games that definitely appealed to a wide range of gamers, and it opened up the imaginations of millions of kids, too. When the SNES arrived on the scene to succeed where the NES left off, Sega’s Genesis has delivered 16-bit gaming goodness for quite some time already, and with the $54.99 Genesis Arcade Ultimate Portable Console, you can roll back the years by enjoying 80 pre-loaded games right out of the box.

The Genesis Arcade Ultimate Portable Console comes with TV-Out capability, not to mention an internal battery that delivers anywhere from 4 to 6 hours of gameplay on a full charge. This means you can just tote around this little puppy without worrying about removing those mint looking carts from your video game collection at home. Some of the games include Altered Beast, the Golden Axe trilogy, and Sonic the Hedgehog I and II, just to mention a few. Games will be played off the SD memory card, and you can once again settle the score with your mate over a round of Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition or Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers.

2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT: The Alphebetastic British Supercar

Jaguars look great and it’s nice to know that they can go very fast as well. This new XKR was made to celebrate Jaguar’s ‘R’ division 25th anniversary. The resulting car is track-focused, but street-legal. It will not only blow your socks off, but your face as well.

Ahhh. Just listen to that sound. Only 30 Jaguar XKR-S GTs will be made available in North America, and you’ll have to fork over $174,000(USD) to get yours. Jaguar has said that if there’s enough demand, production could be ramped up to 50.

Commercial Break: an app that tells you exactly when the ads are over

DNP Commercial Break app

When we’re raiding the fridge during a Vikings game, what’d be nice is a push notification just before Adrian Peterson runs into the end zone. Seeing as that’s probably not feasible given current tech, we’ll settle for an iOS app that alerts us when a timeout or commercial is over. Commercial Break was designed to do just that: you tell it what channel you’re watching and it uses DSP and some algorithms to analyze audio and video cues, delivering a push notification to your mobile device once what you were watching comes back.

As of right now, it’s in public beta with 10 compatible channels in New York City: ABC, CBS, CNN, ESPN, ESPN2, FOX, NBC, TNT, TBS and USA. Outside of the Big Apple, CNN, ESPN and ESPN2 are compatible nationwide, with a few of these channels also available to others along the East Coast. The developers said that once the test run is over, they plan to expand to other markets and port the app to Android. We just wish it worked with AMC too — missing any of Heisenberg’s return because of a fried chicken craving would be tragic.

Microsoft brings Office Mobile to Android smartphones

Microsoft brings Office Mobile to Android

The once-mythical Office Mobile for iPhone has been available for a while, but what about that rumored Android version? As of today, it’s equally real: Microsoft has launched Office Mobile for Android. Its cloud-focused approach to editing Excel, PowerPoint and Word documents will be familiar to those who’ve tried the iOS release, including SkyDrive storage support. What differences exist are there primarily to accommodate Google’s Holo interface guidelines — as on iOS, there’s no tablet-native interface. The pricing certainly hasn’t changed. While the core app is free, you’ll need an Office 365 subscription to start working.

Old Enough To Remember Paperboy For NES? Now You Can Live It With Oculus Rift

paperdude vr

Old school gamers will remember Paperboy, an arcade game — later ported to home systems like the NES and Atari ST — that let you savour the pleasure of virtually breaking your neighbours’ windows by tossing a rolled up newspaper through their front room as you powered past on your bike. Because that’s what passed for entertainment in 1984. Well, time and technology has moved on but creative tech company Globacore, which builds these sort of gaming mash-up installations, has decided to do an updated version of the Paperboy concept, because, well, why not?

PaperDude VR — as it’s called its updated creation — has been hacked together using an actual bike, a Wahoo Fitness KickR indoor resistance bike trainer, an Oculus Rift virtual reality head-set, and Microsoft’s gesture-recognising Kinect peripheral as the key parts of the puzzle. This set up — combined with a LEGO-esque 3D game world built in Unity — lets the PaperDude VR gamer actually pedal and actually toss (or at least make a throwing gesture) as they play the game.

What’s the point of all this? Well it’s mostly for the fun of it — and for Globacore to showcase what they can do — and it sure looks like a neat way to gamify a bike ride. But with the proliferation of connected and increasingly specialised gizmos, fuelled by crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, these sorts of reality simulations are only going to get easier and cheaper for people to hack together. Which is only a good thing for the creative future of gaming.

Audi S3 Sportback gets built-in LTE, available in other models this fall

DNP Audi LTE

Audi was late to the party with an in-car hotspot, but it may have beaten the competition to built-in LTE. High-speed mobile broadband is now a feature available to S3 Sportbacks from July (you’ll need to provide your own SIM), with other A3 variants catching up in November. The company’s Audi Connect infotainment system benefits from this boost, and that LTE connection can be shared with passengers looking to stay under their data caps. No matter what kind of speed freak you are, you’ve now got a data connection to match the car’s quarter-mile prowess.
