Life After Divorce: Why I Went Back To My Maiden Name

By Mandy Walker for YourTango.com

I consider myself a feminist. And yet, I took my husband’s name when I got married over twenty years ago. Looking back, I was conflicted about the strong, independent woman image: I had my career and was never going to give that up to be a stay-at-home mom and yet I thought I wanted a traditional marriage. I didn’t need persuading to take my husband’s name. I did it willingly.

I’m not sure that I knew anyone who hadn’t adopted her husband’s name at that time. But, as I started to meet female colleagues who’d kept their maiden names, I was envious.

Great tech-spectations: What’s next in tech for 2013

The dog days of summer are here, and with them, a certain ennui seems to have washed over the tech world. But as July becomes August, things will begin to kick into high gear.

The big dogs of the tech industry — Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and a host of others — know that the all-important fourth quarter is when shoppers get serious. Last fall’s go-to products — Kindle Fire and Nexus tablets, iPads, iPhones — are getting long in tooth, and ready for a refresh. Not coincidentally, a lot of the back-to-school sales are 2012 models, sold at blowout prices to clear shelf space for the all-important Christmas season.

Disney Research’s AIREAL creates haptic feedback out of thin air

DNP Disney Research's Aireal creates haptic feedback out of thin air

Disney Research is at it again. The arm of Walt’s empire responsible for interactive house plants wants to add haptic feedback not to a seat cushion, but to thin air. Using a combination of 3D-printed components — thank the MakerBots for those — with five actuators and a gaggle of sensors, AIREAL pumps out tight vortices of air to simulate tactility in three dimensional space. The idea is to give touchless experiences like motion control a form of physical interaction, offering the end user a more natural response through, well, touch.

Like most of the lab’s experiments this has been in the works for awhile, and the chances of it being used outside of Disneyworld anytime soon are probably slim. AIREAL will be on display at SIGGRAPH in Anaheim from Sunday to Wednesday this week. Didn’t register? Check out the video after the break.

Failing The Bar Exam, Explaining It To Your Parents Has Never Been So Hilarious (PHOTO)

There are few more challenging career paths than becoming a lawyer. Four years of college, three years of law school, and after all that, you still have to study for months and months and sit for the bar exam.

By some estimates, roughly 70 percent of test takers pass the bar. But how are you supposed to explain yourself if you don’t — especially to parents who were expecting more?

As the hilarious, hand-written letter below makes clear, it’s all about setting expectations low. Real low:

Ask Engadget: best MSN TV replacement?

Ask Engadget best Web TV replacement

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from Seth, who needs to replace his grandpa’s MSN TV2 box. If you’re looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“Many years ago, I bought my grandfather an MSN TV2 box as his first exposure to the internet. We were worried that the gift would be a flop, but he loves it, and is now emailing his old friends and even has a Facebook profile. Of course, Microsoft will close the service a few days before his 91st birthday, so I’d like to know what would you suggest as a replacement? As antiquated as it was, it’s been rock solid from a reliability perspective and that’s going to be key to determine what we get him next.”

So, what’s it to be? What web technology have you adopted for your elderly relatives that you think Seth could use? Why not head down past the break and let us know.

Moto X leaks in more press shots, this time in white

Moto X leaks in more press shots, this time in white

And the saga continues! Hot on the heels of this morning’s leaked renders comes a couple more press shots of the Moto X, courtesy of @evleaks — this time in glorious unicorn white. There’s not much more to mention here other than it’s a lot easier to spot the mics front and back and to get a feel for the texture that adorns the rear. It looks very much like the svelte handset Eric Schmidt recently flaunted at the annual Allen and Co media conference. Not a fan of the existing hues? Motorola’s been pretty clear the phone will be available in custom colors — we’re longing for a beautiful shade of purple ourselves. With the official Moto X launch slated for Thursday August 1st, we’re only days away from getting all the details, so stay tuned for more.

Moto X then wearables: here’s how Motorola gets fashionable

In addition to announcing the Moto X’s official unveil date, this week the folks at Motorola Mobility have had a bit of a spill. This spill – if you could call it that – consists of details surrounding their next generation of smart devices, particularly sitting in the “wearables” realm. Could it be time to see what was most recently hoped for in the Motorola MOTOACTV rebooted here in 2013 to mix it up well with the company’s newest fully fashionable hero smartphone release?

motorola_wearables

This spill comes in the form of a list of hires, job postings made by the company that are looking to help with the expansion of “a new world-class wearables design group within Motorola.” If that’s not a good indicator for a possible big-time expansion of the sector we’ve not yet heard of, we’d like to hear what is.

“Create beautiful, Functional and Desirable objects.”

What you’ll see in the job listing – if it’s still up by the time you see this article – is a suggestion that Motorola’s search requires, first and foremost, a person that will “provide strategic leadership, champion innovation and institute best practices to create a new world-class wearable’s design group within Motorola.”

“Specifically, the Industrial Design Team collaborates closely with our internal work partners to create compelling, usable and innovative products that define our brand with over a million consumers worldwide. The wearables design team will lead the establishment of our brand in the massive competitive and growing space of wearable connected products.”

So what’s this all got to do with Moto X?

Have a peek at the Moto X reveal event invite and observe the design language:

motox-479x500

Can you spot the smartphones?

You’ll find the white version and the black version of Moto X in the hands of these hipsters, and you’ll find at least one accessory – in addition to the phone – on each of these young, cool fashionistas. Even the fellow (we’ll assume it’s a fellow) to the left is wearing a tank-top – certainly not something you wear to the office.

Add to this original Moto X advertisement released on the 3rd of July. Both humans – we’ll assume they’re humans, anyway – are wearing straight black as they jump into the sparkling greatness that is the future, straight above them the brand new Motorola logo complete with rainbow ring.

A posting to Motorola’s Google+ page shared on the 11th of July dropped this image tied to the note: “3D printers, Velcro vans, and really smart people. +MAKEwithMOTO, we like your style.” Of course MAKEwithMOTO has been around for a while longer than this tip, it’s not hard to imagine the initiative crossing paths with Moto X quite easily in the very near future. How about for those back smartphone casings, fully customizable the lot of them?

van

This equation is adding up quick: soon after the Moto X is launched and Motorola’s new aim – the user – becomes more important than making the device destroy all other devices with specifications alone, the company will set its sights on attaching itself to another appendage.

While it’s not immediately clear how Motorola, a Google company, will aim to release any sort of wearable device with Google aiming to release the ideal unit – Glass – this notoriously resilient company will make another move that’s unique.

Will it be another smartwatch? Something to keep track of your steps when you head out for your daily run – or lack thereof? Hardly.

Motorola will be getting a bit more under your skin than that.
