Sorry, the World's First Kosher Lube Is Gone as Fast as It Came

Did you need some kosher lube? Too bad, you just missed the once-in-a-lifetime window. Last week, Trigg Laboratories’ "Wet" line of products became the world’s first kosher lube, but now that coveted blessing has been revoked after the Rabbinical Council of California realized that it is lube for sex.

Motorola Will Officially Unveil The Moto X In New York On August 1

moto-invite

Well, here we go. After a considerable amount of teasing (not to mention cheerleading from Google execs during earnings calls), Motorola Mobility is finally ready to unveil its long-awaited Moto X smartphone to the world, and it’s going to do it at a special event in New York City on August 1.

Actually, you know what? “Unveil” may not exactly be the right word — the veil has basically been off for months if you go the sheer number of leaks we’ve seen make the rounds. At this point we’ve got a pretty good understanding of what the device will look like, what sort of components it’s going to pack inside that peculiarly-curved frame, and what it’s capable of in terms of software. That’s not to say that Motorola hasn’t kept some surprises for the main event — I don’t think anyone has managed to piece together the entire picture yet — but those leaks have taken some of the shine out of the device’s debut.

Even the fast-approaching reveal was hinted at, and by a Google executive no less — CFO Patrick Pichette mentioned during the company’s most recent earnings conference call that the “new Motorola” would reveal itself in the coming weeks.

So, what’s there to get excited about now that the most of the device’s particulars have been picked apart by so many journalists, pundits, and fans like vultures feasting on carrion? Here’s something: the price tag. Motorola Mobility pulled in $998 million in revenue this past quarter, and that number has been sliding for the past few months. And that’s to say nothing of the operating losses the company has been posting — Motorola lost $342 million in Q2 2013, up from the comparatively mild $299 million loss from this time last year. In short, Motorola could use a hardware hit, and a competitive price tag could definitely help the company out there.

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has said that he’s very interested in the concept of powerful low-cost devices and many have taken that as proof that the Moto X won’t cost much at all. Still others believe that, for one reason or another that those low-cost rumors are just that: rumors. There’s been little agreement on where the X will land in terms of price, but it won’t be long before that (along with everything else) becomes clear.

Scientists Created an Impossible Supermaterial Totally by Accident

Scientists Created an Impossible Supermaterial Totally by Accident

For more than a century, scientists have been saying the same thing: It’s impossible to create a water-free disordered magnesium carbonate. It’s too difficult. You’ll never amount to anything! Well, suck it, haters: Researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden have unveiled a super-absorbent version of magnesium carbonate that breaks the world record for surface area and water absorption.

Retina iPad mini arriving in October, based on LG display shipments

Rumors have been buzzing about a Retina-equipped iPad mini for quite some time now, with recent reports noting a 2014 release date, but according to a new report, we could see the high-res iPad mini sometime in October, based on reports that LG is cranking up shipments for display units in the third quarter.

According to DigiTimes, LG is said to be “making headway” in producing Retina-quality display panels that are earmarked for the next-generation iPad mini, and the company expects to ship around 2-3 million display units per month in order to meet Apple’s rumored launch date for the new iPad mini in October.

Of course, DigiTimes hasn’t been too reliable in the past, so we’d take this with a grain of salt if we were you, but an October release date would put the new product cycle at just over a year for the iPad mini, which lines up perfectly with Apple’s update cycle for its other products. In the end, an October release date sounds very reasonable. And a Retina-ified iPad mini also sounds reasonable at this point.

DigiTimes’ report is vastly the opposite of previous reports of a 2014 release for the Retina iPad mini, with a small refresh of the tablet later this year (which won’t be Retina-equipped). This means we’ll see a new iPad mini in October (or sometime in the fall), and then Retina model won’t come until next year, possibly in the spring time.

Digitimes also reports that the fifth-generation iPad will be lighter, smaller, and more powerful — a rumor that seems pretty obvious at this point, but the design is said to be a lot like the iPad mini, with the thinner bezel on the sides. Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see what Apple does in a couple of months, but we’ll no doubt be seeing iPad refreshes.

Which Glass to Use for Which Drink and Why

You’re going to have some friends over for a cocktail housewarming party. No problem, you think to yourself, I’ll just pick up some glassware at Crate & Barrel. You get there, and panic sets in. It’s an absurd, transparent cornucopia of tumblers and flutes and who knows what else, in every conceivable shape and size. You weren’t prepared. Pay attention now, and you will be.

Bullet Blossom Ring: Guns N’ Roses for Your Finger

It’s not often that you see a ring made from a bullet that you could see women wearing. These Bullet Blossom rings are just that. Bang and bloom in one. It’s the softer side of firearm ammunition.

The rings are made from Colt .45 ACP bullet casings that are cut and curled into a beautiful and unique rosette. They’re then soldered to an 18-gauge brass backplate. To top it all off, a Swarovski crystal in the color of your choice is inserted in place of the primer, trading its bang for some bling.

It’s what you get the gun-toting gal who has everything. Plus, if a woman is wearing a bullet on her finger that you gave her, I’m pretty sure she will be yours forever.

The Bullet Blossom ring is available from Gun Goddess, and sells for $45(USD), and is also available in nickel.

Leisure Suit Larry sleazes his way onto iOS

Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded for iOS looks nice, but it feels cramped on an iPhone.

I grew up playing Sierra On-Line’s graphic adventure games: King’s Quest, Space Quest, and especially Leisure Suit Larry, which to my teenage tastes offered the perfect blend of sophomoric humor and sexy-time pursuits.

Proof positive that old games never die, they just get updated and ported to new platforms, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded debuted last month for Windows, Mac, and Linux. And now the lounge lizard’s reboot has come to iOS (with an Android version imminent).

First, a little history: The new game was announced back in 2011, but got a major boost in 2012 with a successful Kickstarter campaign; around 14,000 backers pledged well over half a million dollars. It certainly helped that original series creator Al Lowe, along with several other Sierra ex-pats, were onboard to bring Reloaded to life.

However, just as Duke Nukem couldn’t seem to survive the transition to the 21st century, Larry debuted on desktop… [Read more]
