UPS Store Offers 3D Printing Service

Well, this is definitely a first for the UPS Store, as they have just announced that they will hold the distinction of being the first nationwide retailer to test out 3D printing services; and this is done in-store, of course. Not all UPS Stores will offer this particular service, but only select ones, and this service is suitable for start-ups, small businesses and retail customers. It will kick off in the San Diego area, where other locations in additional cities across the US too, will be on the receiving end of this particular service sometime down the road.

Michelle Van Slyke, vice president of marketing and small business solutions at The UPS Store, said, “Start-ups, entrepreneurs and small business owners may not have the capital to purchase a 3D printer on their own, but they may have a need to show prototypes to their current and potential customers. By offering 3D printing capabilities in-center, we’re able to help further our small business customers’ opportunities for success.”

Right now, the UPS Store is testing out the Stratasys uPrint SE Plus printer, whose claim to fame is the ability to print detailed objects more accurately than home 3D printers. This is definitely one way for small businesses to churn out prototypes without burning a hole in their pocket, and enthusiasts too might want to take a gander at it. [Press Release]

Watch Terrafugia’s Transition fly and drive in public for the first time (video)

DNP Terrafugia first flight

Sure, the Terrafugia Transition took to the skies for the first time at the 2012 NY Auto Show, but it has yet to fly and drive in front of an audience — until now. The “driveable plane” did two laps around the field at this year’s EAA AirVenture airshow in Wisconsin, once up in the air and once on land, as you can see in the videos past the break. In between the laps, it transforms from an airborne into a land vehicle by automatically folding its wings flush against its body. Despite the successful demo, it’ll take a while before we see a Transition on the road — Terrafugia plans to build a third prototype of the $279,000 plane / car before it begins production. Millionaires and supervillains, take note: you can pay a $10,000 reserve fee for one, but don’t expect it to grace your driveway or hangar until 2015 or 2016.

Can You Guess the Movies That These Lego Models Are Recreating?

Can You Guess the Movies That These Lego Models Are Recreating?

This is so fun. Amazing Lego artist Nick Desimone recreated famous movies and TV shows using Lego bricks. The minimalist style of his work will sometimes make you second guess yourself but Desimone’s art is such a perfect imagination of the movies that you’ll eventually see what he wants you to see.

Google Calendar for Android gets cross-device notification sync

Google Calendar for Android gets crossdevice notification sync

The simplest updates are sometimes the best. See the latest update to Google Calendar for Android as an example: the release adds notification syncing between Android devices, saving the trouble of clearing multiple alerts while hopping from tablet to phone and back. That’s the only major addition, but it could represent a big time saver for anyone with a busy schedule. If you’re in that camp, you can grab the new Calendar now through Google Play.

Apple store crazy lady immortalized by Backstreet Boys

If only she'd sung too.

(Credit: Porcha Coleman/Vine Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

Tone is everything. I say that to all my exes as they’re telling me that I’m a no-good worm that turns every apple rotten.

It’s also something that must have been learned by the lady who walked into an L.A. Apple store recently. Yes, the one who screamed her head off because she couldn’t just get the part she required to complete her computing life.

The poor lady didn’t have an appointment — other than with fame, of course.

It wasn’t her fault that actress Porscha Coleman made a Vine out of her performance. (I still think she knew her.)

Jimmy Kimmel found this clip mesmerizing. Indeed, he felt that this performance needed to be immortalized in song.

More Technically Incorrect

How Many of These 79 Words Can You Actually Pronounce?

I make an ass out of myself at least twice a month from butchering the pronunciation of a word. It’s always embarrassing! There’s only two things you can do when you have no idea how to say something, either quietly whisper but quickly gloss over the word so no one hears you or say it with such complete confidence that you confuse the hell out of people who really do know how it’s pronounced.

Nintendo to enable eShop game purchases via PCs and smartphones

Currently, if you want to buy that hot new Super Mario Bros game your coworkers have been talking about, you need to wait until you could get home, power up your Wii U, launch eShop and then purchase it. That long process could become much shorter, however, if Nintendo follows through on a recent report from NicoNico (translated by Siliconera) that it plans to open up eShop access to PCs and smartphones as well. Dan Adelman, Nintendo’s Business Development Manager, confirmed with Joystiq that users would be able to log on to eShop remotely, buy the game, set it up for download and it’ll be right there on their console when they get home. Hopefully this update arrives prior to October, so that Link fans among us can get a head start on downloading that new Zelda game before everyone else.
