Telenav Scout adds real-time, user-reported traffic data to iOS and Android apps

Telenav Scout adds realtime, userreported traffic data to iOS and Android apps

Telenav has been steadily improving Scout, its personalized navigation platform, ever since its introduction. Today, Scout users will finally get the crowd-sourced traffic info they were promised back in April. Scout for both iOS and Android now provides you the wisdom of its 100 million users and traffic partners, allows you to see which roads are congested and calculates up to three possible routes — letting you find the most efficient way from point A to point B. That real-time traffic info augmented with user input also enables drivers to share a more accurate estimated time of arrival, so your dinner date will know exactly how long you’ll be delayed due to that unforeseen fender-bender on the freeway. Additionally, the update adds several new recommendation categories to its Things to Do feature, so it’ll now tell you about live music, local festivals and outdoor activities, too. Sound good? You know the drill, Google Play and the App Store await.

Motorola loss mounts as Google places faith in Moto X

Those looking for a win sooner than expected from Motorola in this week’s earnings announcements from Google will not be finding themselves overjoyed. According to Google’s report, GAAP operating loss for Motorola Mobile was up significantly compared to the same quarter last year, this shown in stark contrast to Google’s own operating income, the larger overarching company’s fortunes increasing at a rate that’s ever-so-slightly smaller than Motorola bleeds.

heromotox-3

It would appear that though Google remains a growing business, they’ll be pushing for a big with with the upcoming hero phone “Moto X” when the company releases it later this year. As GAAP operating loss for Motorola mounted to $342 million in the second quarter of 2013 – compared to last year’s $199 GAAP operating loss during the same quarter, it’s nothing compared to the same quarters for non-GAAP operating loss. These same quarters had Motorola lose $49 million in the second quarter of 2012 and $218 million in the second quarter of 2013.

Google itself is doing quite a bit better with a GAAP operating income at $3.47 billion for the second quarter of 2013, up from a GAAP operating income of $3.44 billion this same quarter one year previous. As for non-GAAP operating income, Google hit $4.21 billion here in the second quarter of 2013 up from $3.99 billion one year ago.

We’ll see Motorola pushing not only the Moto X this next quarter, but three new DROID-branded smartphones with Verizon in the USA as well. It’s likely these devices will find themselves released in slightly modified iterations for international markets and/or non-Verizon carriers in the USA while Moto X leads the way through the end of the year. Have a peek at SlashGear’s Motorola tag portal for more through the future as well!

A quadcopter’s view of Niagara Falls

(Credit: Video screenshot by Michelle Starr/CNET Australia)

On the border between Ontario, Canada, and New York, the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls combined have the highest flow rate of any waterfalls in the world — more than 168,000 cubic meters per minute.

The largest of the three falls is Horseshoe Falls, which is the most powerful waterfall on the North American continent. Although the falls are a fantastic source of hydroelectric power, they’re also incredibly beautiful.

Of course, seeing them from the air is not something many people get to do, so YouTube user Questpact decided that footage of the falls would make a wonderful entry into the DJI Phantom Video Contest.

Origami for iOS and Android: A Better Way to Share With Family

Origami for iOS and Android: A Better Way to Share With Family No one wants their parents on their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media site they might be busy embarrassing themselves on. They surely don’t want to see pictures of you on the verge of consciousness every night and you certainly don’t want them posting embarrassing things in a public forum. Origami keeps things private, so everyone wins.

What does it do?

Lets you share photos, albums, videos, and text messages with other members of your designated family. In addition to being an app, you also get the domain of [yourfamilyname].origami.com, where you get all the functionality of the app versions. Both the mobile app and the website have the same, familiar timeline-style feed. It will even send you a daily newsletter (if you so choose) with all of your family’s latest happenings.

Why do we like it?

Not only are parents or grandparents joining social media sites often a point of contention, but there are some images, videos, and memories in general that you want to make sure stay within your family. And it doesn’t really feel like adding an extra burden onto your social media plate, because for the most part (especially if you’re the type of family that would use this app), you’re already sharing these things anyway. Origami just simplifies it. However, the service is $5 a month, and with all the free—even if less convenient—options out there, it’s probably not worth it for people who don’t regularly keep up with their family online. But if you’ve got a family that loves and/or needs to use the internet to stay connected, this is a wonderfully private, easy way to do it.

Origami, Download this app for: iOS, Android; $5/month (free for first 30 days)

The Best: Confidence that everything is only being seen by family

The Worst: Subscription-only

LEGO Minecraft Sets “Nether” and “Village” appear at SDCC

So you’d like to get just a tiny bit closer to the second and third Minecraft LEGO sets to appear as part of the company’s CUUSOO initiative, would you? Lucky you, SlashGear is live in effect at SDCC 2013 and LEGO brought both sets out to see. Though we’re not going to actually get to play with these little amalgamations of gaming crossover magic, their cuteness remains highly apparent, even behind glass.

minecraftlgaogoa

If you want to get a rather descriptive look at the first Minecraft LEGO set to be unleashed upon the world, have a peek at our original LEGO Minecraft set review. As for the new sets: they’re coming up powerful with many of the same features as the first. Both sets split up into four sections and are able to be constructed as prescribed or in any configuration the user does so choose.

NOTE: Though the first Minecraft LEGO set was indeed part of the fan-initiated vote-to-reality program known as CUUSOO, these 2nd and 3rd sets are out on their own. The first set was so popular, LEGO gave the green light to two more!

“Given our similarities, Minecraft and LEGO building have always been a great match. After the excitement over the first set, we were delighted to extend the line and continue our partnership with The LEGO Group. We can’t wait to see what the two communities create now that there are multiple LEGO Minecraft worlds to build and explore.” – Lydia Winters, Mojang’s director of fun

The Village will be coming in with odd characters like Pig, Villager, and Zombie to hack through both crops and plastic flesh at will, growing and attacking as they might. These characters are part of a series of beings LEGO calls the “Micromob”. According to LEGO on Wikia, Micromobs (one word, per the most recent LEGO press release), are a set of characters constructed of LEGO bricks, unique to the Minecraft LEGO universe (at least so far).

legominecraft

The Nether is a set that comes with hot lava in mind, with both the Minecraft Obsidian Portal and The Nether itself up for exploration with two more Micromob characters. You’ll get one Zombie Pigman and a double dose of Ghasts.

You’ll also find several slightly more massive iterations of these characters sitting around at the LEGO booth here at San Diego Comic-Con 2013. It doesn’t appear that these bits will be up for sale any time soon – but if LEGO did decide they wanted to send a few out, we certainly wouldn’t be mad. Both The Village and The Nether will be appearing on the 1st of September, 2013, for a retail price of $34.99 USD.
