OUYA “Free the Games” fund invests in even more exclusive titles

Ever since the OUYA has entered production, the makers behind the console have been dedicated to getting exclusive games for the OUYA in order to raise the appeal of the Android-powered mini console. Today, the company is announcing a huge program at getting game devs to make games exclusively for the OUYA, and they’re willing to pay developers to make it happen.

OUYA is setting aside $1 million for getting game developers to make games for the new console. They’re calling it the “Free the Games” fund, and essentially, OUYA will be matching funds that game developers raise on Kickstarter. This means that if a dev raises $20,000 for an OUYA game, OUYA will match that and give the developer $20,000 more to make the game.

However, here’s the kicker: Kickstarter projects looking to make an OUYA game have to reach at least $50,000 in order for OUYA to pitch in a match the price, but the company is stopping contributions at $250,000. We’re not sure exactly why OUYA has set a minimum, but it’s most likely to make sure that successful projects actually get made (instead of being underfunded).

However, if OUYA backs your project, you have to agree that the game remains exclusive on the mini console for at least six months. After that, it seems you’re free to do whatever else you want with the game. That doesn’t sound like a bad deal to us, especially if OUYA doubled the funds raised for a new game.

Ouya raised over $8.5 million in its wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, and have shipped out over 10,000 developer consoles. The console has since seen a retail launch, which was quickly sold out, so if you’re a game developer and worried about the success of OUYA, we have to say that there’s probably nothing to be worried about at this point.

Power Bed Riser adds storage space and functionality to your bed

When I moved into my first apartment, it wasn’t exactly the most spacious of places. I had a very small room, in which I could really only fit a twin bed, with my other things. To make the most of things, I bought a cheap set of risers for my tiny bed. This gave me additional storage space underneath, which really came in handy. But what if there was a way to make those risers even more useful?

These Power Bed Risers might appear to be your average bedding accessory, however, one of them has a very special feature. The special riser has two grounded power outlets, and a pair of USB ports. This is enough to ensure that you’re able to easily plug in your laptop, phone, lamp, and anything else you might need beside your bed.

The 7-inch risers come in a set of four (for obvious reasons), and only one has the special outlets, so you’ll want to position it accordingly. The power cord that connects it to your wall is 7′ long, and should hopefully reach one of your outlets without any trouble. At a price of $25 for the set, it’s a perfect addition to a dorm, or any small bedroom.

Verizon Joins The Early Phone Upgrading Wars With New ‘Edge’ Program

verizon

Verizon CFO Fran Shammo confirmed during the company’s quarterly earnings call that Verizon Wireless was working on a new, more frequent phone upgrading scheme called Edge, but didn’t elaborate much. As it happens, that was because Verizon’s Wireless arm was just about to pull back the curtain on the program ahead of its August 25 launch.

Here’s the skinny: if you’re on one of VZW’s Share Everything plans and skip the annual contracts in favor of a month-to-month deal, Verizon will split the full retail price of that phone over 24 months. Want to ditch that phone for a new one? That’s just fine as long as it’s been at least six months since you got it and you’ve paid off 50% of the device’s cost.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that you’re eyeing up an iPhone and plan to upgrade your phone as soon as you have the option. Verizon sells the 16GB iPhone 5 for $649 sans contract, which works out to a monthly payment of about $27 over 24 months, but in order to upgrade as early as possible you’ll have to shell out $325 in that first six months — or $54 each month if you decide to pay in equal installments — on top of whatever (probably pricey) share plan costs you’ve chosen to deal with.

If all that sounds familiar, well, I can’t blame you. T-Mobile CEO John Legere revealed the JUMP early upgrade program for T-Mobile customers earlier this month, under which customers could effectively pay $10 a month in exchange for the ability to swap phones twice a year provided their devices were in good shape. Then AT&T rolled out a similar program called Next (seriously, what’s with these four letter names”) just a few days ago that’s actually a bit worse — customers who take that route will see the full cost of a device split over 20 months, which means you’ll have paid $384 by the time you first get to upgrade.

Throw in the fact that neither Verizon nor AT&T are offering price breaks on plans to offset the built-in subsidy costs (after all, you’re agreeing to pay full price for the phone over time instead of getting it much cheaper up-front with a traditional 2 year contract) and it becomes clear that avid upgraders should think carefully before embracing either of these options.

Town considers licenses for ‘drone hunting’

Could this be the key to small town tourism? Or a sign of the battle to come?

(Credit: KMGH-TV screenshot by Eric Mack/CNET)

I never thought it would happen this quickly, but one town in my home state is looking to fire the first shot in the war against the drones.

Actually, it’s a little more political than the old “Terminator”-style man vs. machines scenario. The town of Deer Creek, Colo., is looking to begin offering “drone hunting licenses” and actually paying rewards to anyone who presents proof that they were able to bring down an unmanned aerial vehicle belonging to the United States federal government, according to reporting by Denver TV station KMGH.

Phillip Steel, the man who drafted the ordinance, as well as other supporters, say it will provide a new source of revenue for the town, but Steel concedes that it’s not exactly like Deer Trail has a drone problem. In fact, he’s never seen one over the town.

“This is a very symbolic ordinance,” he told KMGH. “Basically, I do not believe in the idea of a surveillance society, and I believe we are heading that way.”

LG Optimus F3 heads to Virgin Mobile with 4G LTE

This week the folks at Virgin Mobile have let it be known that they’re bringing the LG Optimus F3 to their ranks, complete with the full 2013 LG suite of software features. Inside there’s a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and up above a 4-inch IPS LCD display, covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for reinforced scratch resistance.

optimiuuusss

This device brings on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean along with essentially the same software build as we’ve seen with higher-powered devices this year like the LG Optimus G Pro. This smartphone works with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera at its back with LED flash and 1080p full HD video capture. Up front is a VGA camera for video chat and all the selfies you can handle.

NOTE: This device is exceedingly similar to the LG Optimus F5 and F7 we saw earlier this year at Mobile World Congress. Have a peek!

Under the hood you’ve got SmartShare for DLNA wireless media mirroring and sharing, Polaris Viewer 4 for Office document viewing and editing, and Wi-Fi Direct for additional super-fast file sharing abilities. You’ll be rolling out with a 2,460 mAh battery to keep you active all day long, and this device’s QSlite 2.0 “advanced multitasking” engine should be your key to next-level software-bound productivity.

20130503_014702-580x326

This machine works with a fabulous LED light home button like we’ve seen with the LG Optimus G Pro as well. Strange as it may seem, this little feature was one of the most unique of the whole generation of devices, so says our LG Optimus G Pro review – its mesmerizing! Though on the surface that may not say much about the rest of the phone, rest assured: LG has done a rather fine job with this generations’ smartphones.

As for the 4G LTE; remember you’re working with Sprint bands, meaning the coverage area is not going to be especially expansive – you’ll need to check to see if your region has coverage well before assuming you’ll be hitting Verizon or AT&T LTE speeds any time soon. This device is being offered by Virgin Mobile for $179.99 attached to a “Beyond Talk” plan (“monthly no-contract plan” they call it) with unlimited data and messaging, this starting at $35 per month.
