Microsoft offering Xbox Live Gold to Office 365 subscribers, US gets stiffed

Microsoft is looking to appeal to the number crunchers who also might be gamers in their spare time. The company is bundling a whole year of Xbox Live Gold with their Office 365 service for free. Anyone that buys and activates an Office 365 Home Premium or Office 365 University annual subscription before September 28 will be able to get a free year of Xbox Live Gold.

xbox-360-controller

That’s quite the deal if you ask us, but here’s the kicker: It’s not available in the US. Only 38 countries are eligible, including most of Europe and some South American countries, as well as Canada, but Microsoft seems to be leaving out one of its biggest markets in the world. It’s possible Microsoft is testing out the promo before bringing it to the States, but we wouldn’t be surprised if we never saw it.

Office 365 was launched back in 2011 to offer a cloud-based Office suite for businesses and educational institutions. Consumers can still buy Office on its own, just like it has always been, but Microsoft is pretty set on wanting to get more and more users taking advantage of Office 365, and a free year of Xbox Live Gold is pretty enticing.

We probably won’t see a huge rise in the number of new users for Office 365 based on this deal, but it does prove what Microsoft is willing to offer if you switch over to the new cloud-based word processing software. Xbox Live Gold costs $60 for one year, which is quite a bit after that adds up.

However, we could definitely see college students being the majority of adopters for this deal, considering that you get a free year of Xbox Live Gold, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few businessmen and women who secretly enjoyed playing a game or two after work hours.

The First Smartwatch You Might Actually Want Is Designed For Kids

As if kids didn’t have it pretty awesome already, now it looks like they’ll be among the first of us to get their hands—or wrists—on a bona fide smartwatch with the Filip. But don’t get too jealous. The Filip is designed as a safety device more than anything, with Wi-Fi, cellular, and GPS capabilities designed to let a parent keep in touch and keep tabs on their kids.

Report: Dell Precision M3800 workstation to launch with 3,200 x 1,800 display option (updated)

Dell Precision M3800 laptop

According to a source speaking to Dutch site Tweakers.net, which has been spot on with a previous Dell leak, a new laptop known as the M3800 is set to join Dell’s Precision range of workstations. An Intel Core i7-4702MQ (Haswell) processor will reportedly power the M3800, with a 2GB NVIDIA Quadro K1100M GPU taking care of graphics. It’s expected to come with up to 16GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive or 512GB SSD and two options for the 15.6-inch screen: a 3,200 x 1,800 resolution or a 1080p panel as the base option. The workstation is said to measure 18mm (around 0.7 inches) at its thickest point, and tip the scales at 2kg (4.4 pounds). Integrated docking found on other Precision models is apparently not in the M3800’s feature set; it’s also missing an Ethernet port, so hard-lines will need to be connected via a USB intermediate. Tweakers.net lists an expected price range of $1,699 to $1,999, but now comes the part where we wait for the M3800 to go official and see how correct all this leaked info is.

Update: Dell has now provided us with a statement that confirms that the M3800 is indeed coming later this year, although it’s not yet confirming all of the specs. More information is promised in the coming weeks.

Dell is introducing the thinnest and lightest workstation ever later this year. The Dell Precision M3800 is the first mobile workstation that is less than ¾ of an inch, at 18mm, weighs only 4.5lbs and offers certified performance and dependability for creative professionals. We are not releasing or confirming any additional details today but stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

Slighter USB Rechargeable Electric Lighter

So your other half has been pestering you for the longest time to kick that smoking habit of yours, but somehow or rather, you find the lure of tobacco to be too powerful to resist. Since then, he or she has decided to give up on asking you to do so, and realized that you must be accepted completely – warts and all. Hence, if you happen to fall on the side who has been asking the other party to stop smoking and failed in your quest, perhaps it is time to play the role of “good cop” by getting them the $19.99 Slighter USB Rechargeable Electric Lighter.

Let’s face it – any other ordinary lighter just will not do, but an electric lighter – now there is something in which you do not see every single day. Most of us are used to gas-based or fluid-based lighters, but an electric lighter? It is certainly out of the ordinary, and we are glad to report that this is a weather-proof lighter, where it is capable of lighting up approximately 150 cigarettes before requiring a recharge. It does not use any gas or butane, and can be juiced up via USB, now how about that? Definitely the lighter to have during a zombie apocalypse, as long as you have a solar-powered energy generator, that is.

40 Foot Dragon Skull Shows up on a Beach

This is what it would look like if dragons actually existed and we uncovered their bones. This 40 foot dragon skull is amazing and scary. I would hate to run into this thing on the beach. As if by magic, this massive dragon skull appeared on Charmouth Beach in Dorset, England.

It’s part of a promotion for HBO’s Game of Thrones, since Blinkbox now has Season Three of the series available for streaming. This was a great way to announce it as well as scare beachgoers.

It took a team of three people two months to sculpt this thing. How they got it into place is a mystery. Hopefully they leave it there for brave kids to play with it in perpetuity.

7 Graphics of Earth's Coolest Phenomena, From Rainbows to Earth Wobble

What’s the oldest tree on Earth? What’s a rainbow? Is the Earth wobbling? It’s fun to ask these questions but trickier to answer them—in simple terms, at least. Luckily, Viennese designer Michæl Paukner has done us all a huge favor by creating these lovely visual explanations.

First batch of new generic top-level domains born, Amazon looking unlikely to snag .amazon

First batch of new generic toplevel domains born, Amazon looking unlikely to snag amazon

After spending over a year thumbing through applications, ICANN has inked agreements for establishing the first new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). Those that made the cut this round were the Arabic word for web or network (.شبكة), game in Chinese (.戏), and the Russian for online (.онлайн), as well as website (.сайт) — as ICANN notes, these gTLDs will be the first to use non-Latin characters. Also coming out of the ICANN47 meeting for internet overlords is a bit of bad news for Amazon. A committee recommended that the retailer should not be given control of the .amazon domain, likely due to confusion the suffix could create with the Amazon region in South America. ICANN may see fit to go against the recommendation, but if Amazon’s history with objectionable applications is anything to go by, it’s looking like yet another $185,000 down the drain.
