Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70: Zoomier Than Any Point-and-Shoot Camera Ever

What you’re looking at here is the zoomiest point-and-shoot camera ever made. The Panasonic Lumix DMX-FZ70’s f/ 2.8, 20-1200mm lens offers up to 60x optical magnification. The previous top zooms only hit the 50x mark. That’s a lot of zoom. Look at that freaking lens.

Motorola Droid Ultra leaks again, this time with a red, textured finish

Motorola Droid Ultra leaks again, this time with a red, textured finish

A better look at Motorola’s next Droid, the Ultra, has surfaced thanks to serial phone-revealer @evleaks. This time we’re getting a clearer view of the back, decked in some familiar Verizon hues. Alongside some good hints that it’ll house a high-capacity battery like the RAZR Maxx series, we’d hazard a guess that there’s a kevlar finish to that red weave pattern, although we’ll probably have to wait for that incoming Motorola event before we’re able to clarify that. Fortunate, then, that it will all kick off with Verizon in just a few days.

Hulu will disable automatic Facebook sharing

Hulu will disable automatic Facebook sharing

The still-under-previous-ownership Hulu is disabling the Open Graph-powered option to automatically share the videos you watch with your friends on Facebook. According to the video streaming site, the change came because “feedback indicated that people prefer the experience of expressly sharing content.” So, if you really want people to know you’re watching the latest Switched at Birth, you can just punch the button at the bottom of the page. If you’ve switched social features on for services like Hulu or Netflix: do you welcome the added control, or are you among those looking forward to a feed with less spam from oversharing friends?

Young Mad Scientist Super Awesome Sylvia Is Kickstarting A Robotic Watercolor Set

61af185768a2790f7942c3745445992b_large

A 12-year-old maker named Super Awesome Sylvia (she is quite super awesome) is looking for $50,000 to build a robotic watercolor set, the WaterColorBot, that can draw nearly anything you design in a computer paint program. Asking why you don’t just take brush to paint pot with your hand is irrelevant — this, friends, is a robotic watercolor plotter. ‘Nuff said.

Sylvia is working with Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories to build the kits, and a pledge of $275 gets you a WaterColorBot that acts just like an old-fashioned chart plotter. It is nearly complete and EMSL writes:

To put the kit together, you’ll need small and medium philips-head screwdrivers, and a sharp pair of scissors. Pre-teen and younger kids will need adult help to put it together and get started using it.

The system “paints” vector-based files in SVG format, so you’ll need to find applicable pictures that can be easily resized. However, it shouldn’t be a problem to mass-produce your notes to Grandma or that wonderful vector graphic of your pet cat.

NVIDIA SHIELD headed to movie theaters in August for gamer one-on-one time

If you’re itching to get your hands on NVIDIA’s SHIELD handheld gaming device and you happen to live near certain locations on the west and east coast, you’ll have an opportunity to try it for yourself throughout August. The company is offering the public a chance to play with SHIELD at select theaters on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in New York and San Francisco.

The initiative is taking place in what is called the SHIELD Movie Theater Experience Centers, which are what appear to be booths set up in select movie theaters with NVIDIA representatives and SHIELD devices. Those who visit will be given a chance to play the device and ask whatever questions they might have. As NVIDIA says, “There’s no substitute for a good, old-fashioned test drive.”

The hands-on events will take place in four different locations, two in the New York area and the other two in California. For those on the east coast, you’ll be able to head over to the Garden State 16 on Garden Plaza in New Jersey or the New Roc Stadium 18 in New Rochelle, New York. And if you’re on the west coast, you can go to either Cupertino 16 in Cupertino, Cali, or to Mercado 20 in Santa Clara.

The Experience Centers will only be up on the weekends (including Friday), so schedule accordingly. What can you expect when you see the device? A 5-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, as well as two joysticks and a directional pad, YBAX buttons, menu buttons, and a menu full of games optimized for the device.

There’s a microSD slot that can take up to 64GB cards, as well as a mini HDMI port for output to a 1080p display. There’s also a microUSB port for connecting with a computer. You can get an in-depth look at the device in our unboxing, and check out some videos of game demonstrations and such in the Project SHIELD tag portal.

This Smart Scalpel Can Smell Cancer as It Cuts

Cancer surgery is invariably difficult, in part, because doctors have always had a hard time determining exactly where the healthy tissue ends and the tumor begins. Not anymore. A new "intelligent knife" can actually sniff out the cancer cells during an operation and keep the doctor on track.
