Nexus 7 2 release imminent: tips file in

Those of you waiting for a reboot of the Nexus 7, aka the most successful Nexus tablet yet delivered by Google, will be glad to see more than one source reporting an imminent release this afternoon. This new device has been tipped to be coming to both physical stores and to Google’s own online outlet Google Play before the month of July is over. Based based solely on the stated date (July 24th) of the Google event invite delivered earlier today, we wouldn’t be surprised if the documents being shared this afternoon are entirely accurate. UPDATE: There appears to be a bit of a hardware leak, as well.

There are two distinct – or what appear to be distinct – leaks appearing today, both of which show in-store availability of the Nexus 7 2. Of course that’s just a name that allows the prospective device to be searched for easily whilst users are seeking information on it here before the launch – the real name remains unknown. According to Android Central, the device will go by the name “Nexus 2″ or “Nexus 2 7″.

In this case based on the massive amount of confusion that would ensue if Google did indeed release a machine called “Nexus 2″ where its predecessor was called “Nexus 7″, we’ll put our money on the device retaining its current branding.

Meanwhile Engadget has a document which suggests OfficeMax will be getting the tablet in kind. This document goes on to note that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will continue to be sold, as will the Google Nexus 10, but inside multi-device (or accessory) bundles. This could very well mean that the company will be preparing for a reboot of the Nexus 10 as well – one follows the other, right?

This OfficeMax one-sheet suggests that the company will be getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 soon as well. This device is part of a three tablet release which also includes the (recently reviewed by SlashGear) Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 – have a peek!

Retail pricing on the reboot of the Nexus 7 is set at $269.99 or $269.00 USD for the 32GB model according to both sources. Meanwhile there’s a 16GB model in the mix for $229.00, while sizes outside these two appear to be missing at the moment. We’ll just go ahead an assume a 64GB iteration would launch later in the year, similar to the schedule that appeared with the launch of the original Nexus 7.

The device is rumored to be coming with an upgraded processor as well as a display with a bit denser set of pixels. It’s suggested that this ASUS-made machine (and ASUS appears to be confirmed in the OfficeMax tip here) will ring true to the device ASUS Pad K009. Keep your ear to the ground and read up in our exploration of this next-generation machine in Nexus 7 2 and the details you want for a reboot.

Twitter for Android update brings inline replies, sharing through direct messages

Twitter fans on Android just got a pair of small features that could go a long way toward streamlining conversations. An update to the app now lets socialites reply directly from a tweet’s detail page, skipping a minor but sometimes annoying step. The refresh also permits sharing tweets through direct messages — you won’t have to broadcast your intentions to the world. If time or privacy is of the essence, Twitter’s Android upgrade is already live at the source link.

Pee-analyzing urinal spots drunks before they drive

This warning shows up at the valet parking.

(Credit: Video screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET)

Urine and technology have turned out be great bathroom buddies. Michigan drafted chatty urinal cakes to fight drunk driving. A bar in Brazil rocked out with a urinal guitar. Now Singapore is getting in on the action with the Pee Analyser at dance club hot spot Zouk.

Developed in conjunction with marketing agency DDB Group Singapore, the system uses pee power to try to identify drunks before they hop behind the wheel of a car.

The Pee Analyser arrangement is pretty clever. Club-goers receive an RFID parking pass when they drop their cars off at valet. A device sitting in the urinal measures alcohol levels. An RFID reader near the urinal picks up each person’s parking pass. If the urine clocks in above the legal limit, a sign at eye level suggests calling a cab to get home and the system takes note.

Rumor Has It: No Retina iPad Mini in your holiday stocking

No Retina iPad Mini for the holidays

It’s been quite a week for news that starts with the word “smart.”

Eric Schmidt was caught last week holding the rumored Moto X smartphone, which opened the flood gates of speculation: When will it come out? Who will carry it? What’re the specs?

A leaked alleged release schedule, though, claims to have an answer to at least one of those questions. The Moto X, along with the HTC One, will arrive at Verizon next month.

The smartwatch train is a fast-moving one, and everyone’s trying to jump aboard. A new rumor claims that Microsoft is hard at work on a smartwatch of its own, and has put the Surface team on the case. And Apple, not to be outdone, is supposedly “aggressively” hiring people for its iWatch team.

And finally, I’m sorry iPad Mini fans, but you might have to … [Read more]

How to Make Your Own Batman Folding Batarang

Have your butler clear off your work bench. Put your billion dollar company on hold! You have some weapons to make! Or you could just have Wayne Enterprises make these awesome batarangs. However, since most of us are not Bruce Wayne, we will just have to do it ourselves.

Instructables contributor Triumphman built this amazing folding steel weapon himself. He used an angle grinder to cut the shapes out of steel, then drilled a pivot hole. After that he smoothed and sharpened the edges, painted it, and screwed it together.

It looks great and folds up nicely to tuck into your utility belt. Head over to Instructables for the full details on how to make one for yourself. It looks pretty straightforward if you know how to work with metal and you have the right tools in your lair. No doubt, it looks horribly dangerous for the rest of us.

WASHINGTON — The Senate has easily confirmed Fred Hochberg for a second term heading the Export-Import Bank as a bipartisan pact seems to be holding over seven of President Barack Obama’s stalled nominations.

Senators prepared to cast a second, more controversial vote on whether to end a filibuster against Thomas Perez. He’s Obama’s pick for Labor Secretary.

Teachers At Brooklyn School Raise Nearly $36,000 For Undocumented Students’ Scholarship

At International High School in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights neighborhood, teachers always told their immigrant students to work hard, apply to college and receive scholarships. However, when faced with undocumented students who could neither afford college nor apply for federal aid, they had nothing to say. Until this year.

A group of five teachers at the high school –- which is composed exclusively of recent immigrants — started a scholarship fund several months ago to help their undocumented students pay for college. So far, they have raised nearly $36,000 for the International Dreamers Scholarship Fund, and they hope to reach a goal of $40,000.

Lamborghini Parcour off-road concept demoed (and crashed)

The 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed was jam-packed with all sorts of racing events, including the infamous hill climb that saw two cars crash. However, those weren’t the only accidents to happen over the week. Lamborghini’s latest concept, called the Parcour, was demoed on the track and actually ended up crashing, damaging the rear end of the car.

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 4.41.49 PM

The Parcour is an off-road vehicle of sorts that sports the supercar styling you see on many exotic cars, combined with larger wheels and higher road clearance that you see on SUVs. The car looks a little weird at first, but it seems to work for the most part, except for when the car loses control and slams into some hay bales, causing damage to a multi-million dollar prototype.

The Parcour seen in the video below is just one of the two models that have been built, and while the company is downplaying the severity of the damage (saying that it would just need minor repairs and would be back on the road in no time), the car needed to be put on flatbed truck and towed away.

The Parcour was originally unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year, and it sports a 550-horsepower, mid-mounted V10 engine that can get the car off-roading pretty easily. The tires don’t look to be anything off-road worthy, but it probably doesn’t take long to switch the wheels and tires out for something a bit more rigid and rugged.

Of course, the crowd’s reaction is pretty priceless. You hear them cringing knowing that an expensive prototype is about to run right into a stack of hay bales, but then they start clapping immediately, either for a genuine sigh of relief that the crash wasn’t worse, or a sarcastic applause of “good job, driver!”.
