TWC TV app hits Samsung TVs with VOD access, live TV coming soon

TWC TV app launches for Samsung Smart TVs with VOD access, live TV coming soon

Even as Time Warner Cable’s relationship with CBS keeps the tag “it’s complicated” the cable company has launched a version of its TWC TV app for Samsung’s Smart TV platform. We’ve seen prototypes in years past, but now that it’s officially available the app is ready to run on 2012 and 2013 model year TVs. Unlike some of the other versions, this one is video on-demand compatible only, although support for live TV channels is promised by the end of the year. If you don’t have a Samsung TV but do have Time Warner Cable, we’ve heard some more information about plans for other platforms. The Xbox 360 app (with Kinect support) is due in early to mid August, while updates for Android / iOS / Roku are expected in the next few months. There’s no firm confirmation of a client for Sony’s gaming consoles, but the PS3 is still listed on internal documents, so we’ll have to wait and see on that. Samsung TV owners can snag the app by hitting the Smart Hub button on their remote or downloading it from the video category in the app store, let us know if it’s worth the wait.

Kinect Used To Create Maya Pixel Sculpture

Microsoft’s Kinect has definitely come a long, long way, since its 2010 release (do check out our hands-on), and it has been hacked to be a boob tracker (of all things!), help out in sign language, and in more recent news, Kinect is even employed by the US Navy to address rape issues, now how about that? Well, since a picture speaks a thousand words, and a video does say a whole lot more than that as it contains a fair number of pictures being shown at a pretty fast rate per second, check out what is shown above. Apparently, Kinect has been employed to create this interesting looking pixel structure.

British artist Luke Jerram managed to come up with a pixel sculpture of Maya, his daughter, using an Xbox Kinect for a full body scan. From a distance away, there will be concerned passers-by who might just decide to question the lone girl, but when they approach ‘her’, she will distort into large pixels that are formed by aluminium and stickers.

Some Japanese Auto Manufacturers Team Up With Government To Offer More Publicly Accessible Chargers For Electric Vehicles

Some Japanese Auto Manufacturers Team Up With Government To Offer More Publicly Accessible Chargers For Electric VehiclesWhen it comes to electric vehicles, there is one very huge disadvantage that is associated with them – that is, their range, or rather a shortness of it compared to gas-powered rides. Of course, some solutions have been offered up such as the EP Tender that we talked about earlier this morning, but it is still an unsightly addition to the back of your stylish ride. Having said that, a bunch of Japanese auto manufacturers, Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi has announced that they will be working alongside the Japanese government of the day in order to deliver more than triple the number of publicly accessible chargers throughout the Land of the Rising Sun, and we are talking about Level 2 as well as DC fast chargers. This would mean approximately 11,000 units and 5,700 units, respectively, now how about that?

In order to do so, the Japanese government also shared that they intend to release approximately 100 billion yen (that would amount to around $1 billion in US dollars) worth of subsidies so that additional regular chargers can be installed in various places such as shopping malls and restaurants, all the while deploying more fast chargers at or near highway rest stops and gas stations.

Facebook TV-Style Ads To Sell For $2.5M Each (Rumor)

Facebook TV Style Ads To Sell For $2.5M Each (Rumor)It seems that there is no way to find a way out of advertising – everywhere you go and turn, there is some sort of advert hanging over you, even in a creepy manner where ads seem to know who you are, and deliver a custom ad that best fits your ‘profile’. Of course, there are instances where advertisements can be criticized for being deemed as deceptive to the consumer, but others do have legit methods of going about it. Yahoo has done its bit to inject some life into their mobile advertising arm, while Twitter is looking into targeted ads, and the Samsung-Apple wars does not stop at just patents and lawsuits, but also includes the realm of advertising. Facebook is no stranger to the world of ads in their social network, having raised some controversy recently, but it seems that the social network giant is reportedly (according to Bloomberg) going to sell TV-style ads for $2.5 million a pop.

These ads will arrive in 15-second videos, and the clips are inserted directly into a person’s news feed. Initially, it is said that these ads will be sold on a full-day day basis, where its targeting will be based solely on a person’s age and gender. A video would not show itself more than three times per person, per day, and the price would cost marketers anywhere from $1 million to $2.5 million each day. Hopefully the presence of these video ads will not ruin the end user’s experience.

Nokia RX-114 Tablet Spotted On Benchmark Site

Nokia RX 114 Tablet Spotted On Benchmark SiteHmmm, now this is something interesting – Nokia might be jumping aboard the tablet bandwagon after all, after rumors concerning a possible Nokia Zoom with an image of an alleged expunged Nokia tablet hitting the headlines earlier this month. It is said that Nokia could very well be testing out a Snapdragon 800powered device that runs on the Windows operating system, assuming the data that was spotted in a recent benchmark result could be trusted. After all, it is pretty easy to fake stuff online these days.

Taking on the RX-114 name, it was allegedly spotted in a GFXbench app. Of course, it remains to be seen whether this is a Windows Phone 8 smartphone or Windows RT tablet, but the listing, should it be accurate, states a 1371 x 771 pixels, which would be close to the 1366 x 768 pixel screen size that can be found on the Surface RT, which would increase the possibility of it being a tablet more than a smartphone. If Nokia gets the RX-114 right as a tablet, it might help shed some stigma associated with Microsoft’s Surface tablets, which is shown to be a failed iPad killer, as Microsoft had to reduce the price of the tablet by $150 and eventually write-down $900 million worth of inventory. At least Walmart benefited from the price cut by selling out their inventory, contrary to those who believed otherwise.

NVIDIA Shield review (update: video!)

DNP NVIDIA Shield review it's almost like NVIDIA thinks it's Razer or something TKTK

NVIDIA Shield is a truly strange device. It combines an eight-button console-size gamepad with dual analog sticks, and a 5-inch “multi-touch, retinal” screen. It runs stock Android 4.2.1. It touts wireless PC game streaming as its main selling point. It plays Android games, it plays PC games, it does the Twitter and the Gmail, et cetera. With Shield, NVIDIA is aiming to be the Swiss Army Knife of handheld game consoles. It slices! It dices! ShamWOW!

It also costs $300, weighs nearly 1.5 pounds and takes up quite a bit of bag space. Its main selling point — PC game streaming — is dependent on the user already owning a PC with a relatively fancy ($140) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU or better. Let’s be honest, though: you already know this stuff, right? If you’re reading this review, you either already own all the necessary gear and wanna know if this is a worthwhile peripheral for your PC, or you’re morbidly curious about NVIDIA’s (admittedly bizarre) console experiment. Let’s all head below and try to find satisfaction.

Update: We’ve added our full review video below — please excuse the lateness! We ran into some technical glitches on our end, but the tribbles have all been eradicated.

Alleged Moto X Nano SIM Tray Leaked

Alleged Moto X Nano SIM Tray LeakedWhen it comes to Motorola’s upcoming Moto X smartphone, it might not be a flagship device, but this does not mean that there is not much buzz surrounding the smartphone. After all, we do know that it will be proudly “made in the USA”, and we have also seen its “final” press shots posted online already, in addition to rumors of a so-called Magic Glass bandied about, not to mention alleged images of the said Magic Glass spotted, too. Well, this time around, the Moto X comes under the spotlight once again, with an alleged Nano-SIM belonging to the Moto X leaked out in Hong Kong.

What you see above is the alleged Nano-SIM tray of the Moto X with the smartphone itself located right beside Nano-SIM tray. Judging by the size of the SIM card, should the Moto X end up using the Nano-SIM card, then it would place it in the same league as the iPhone 5 from Apple. I guess that would mean a paradigm shift for those who are using Micro-SIM cards at the moment, and this change in SIM card types does get tiring after a while.
