Robot Gymnast Does Quadruple Backflip

We at Technabob have judged this guy and everyone gave him a 10. Except for me, but that’s only because when I held my score card up, it was upside down. Sorry I messed up your score little robot, but your feat is most impressive.

backflip robot

Watch as this little guy does a quadruple backflip. Soon robots will be taking our olympic medals too. Not that we will care. We will just be a stadium of heads on pikes. The ‘bots will compete and they will press an audio button for the crowd to go wild.

This little guy is crazy. Watch him twirl around that pole like a freak. He somersaults too…

Panasonic Toughbook Windows 8 upgrade continues push for rugged supremacy

There’s no lack of high-powered ruggedness in the Panasonic Toughbook range, and when it comes to keeping up with the rest of the notebook power world, the company is making sure of Windows 8-era excellence this week. There’s the Toughbook CF-31, CF-19 and CF-H2 from Panasonic’s “ultra durable Fully-rugged” range and the Semi-rugged CF-53 that are getting said upgrade, it’ll finally be time to really, truly be done with Windows XP.

Speaking on the end of Windows XP support by Microsoft in 2014, Panasonic suggests that this upgrade to Windows 7 and 8 will offer “smooth migration option(s) for businesses.” That’s not the only use for these hardcore machines, of course, with each unit aimed at unique use-cases for computer needs small and great. In addition to updating the operating systems of these notebooks, camera upgrades are in order for full video conferencing functionality.

Each of the four models mentioned will be hitting the market with a push for the next generation of convertible notebook, tablet, and all-in hardcore notebook machines immediately. Just make sure wherever you’re picking one of these machines up that you’re hitting the newest range – run down the specs while you’re at it!

SlashGear also recently had some hands-on time with the back-breaking Panasonic Toughbook CF-AX2 if you’d like to take a look. This machine was revealed well within the bounds of this same future-ready range of Windows 8 machines so doesn’t fall under this reboot schedule – it’s already prepped!

The same goes for the Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2, a display-turning transformable notebook ready to bring on both tablet and notebook abilities in a hardcore form. And for those of you that want to say small and don’t necessarily feel the need to move forward with Windows 8, there’s always the Panasonic Toughbook SX2 from back in 2012 – always room for a strange trackpad or two!

Intuitive Aerial takes the Oculus Rift on its first FPV drone flight (video)

DNP Intuitive Aerial takes the Oculus Rift's on its first FPV drone flight

The Oculus Rift: it’s not just for gaming. Erik Torkel Danielsson, one of the co-founders of Intuitive Aerial, decided to put his shiny new Rift through its paces this week by pairing it with his company’s Black Armor Drone. The hexacopter is designed for aerial photography, and the payload is pretty hefty — attached to the rig are two cameras simultaneously recording video and an onboard laptop. The video is encoded by the laptop and transmitted to the land-based computer via WiFi for display on the Rift. It all sounds pretty nifty, but it’s not quite a perfect system yet. There’s a latency of about 120 milliseconds, which is feasible for FPV flight, but not ideal. That being said, it’s still fun to see the Rift being put to new, innovative uses. To watch Intuitive Aerial’s first flight, check out the video after the break.

Griffin PowerDock 5 arrives as five-port charging station

It’s been awhile since we last heard about Griffin‘s PowerDock 5 charging station — back in January at CES, in fact. However, the company finally launched the new product today and is touting it as a central place to charge all of your mobile devices, including tablets, complete with five charging bays with their own USB port.

image0000-580x327

What’s quite unique about the PowerDock 5 is that it includes clear plastic dividers that separate each of the charging bays, but they also act as a support for leaning your mobile devices against, and they’re strong enough to support a full-size iPad. Griffin is marketing the PowerDock 5 for iOS device, but we reckon it can be used with just about any other device as well.

As for specifics, each USB port is rated at 10 watts (5 volts DC @ 2.1 amps). 2.1 amps is enough to adequately charge a tablet and the extra amperage can charge a smartphone faster than the traditional 1 amp would, but if there’s anything you should know about battery health, it’s that battery life can degrade over time if you overuse amps when charging a phone, so that’s something to keep in mind for the future.

We took a gander of the charging station at CES and were surprised by how light it was. It’s essentially made entirely of plastic with a rubber base on the bottom to prevent it from sliding around on tabletops. As mentioned, the plastic dividers seemed strong enough to support even the heaviest of mobile devices.

The PowerDock 5 is priced at $99.99 and is available on Belkin’s website. We should also be seeing it pop up on retailer website as well in the next few weeks as the device becomes more ubiquitous. $100 is certainly a pretty price to pay for five USB ports, but if you’re looking for a neat solution during parties where your friends can charge up, the PowerDock 5 could make the shortlist.

3D-printed T.rex skull opens wide

And what big teeth you have.

(Credit: Namisu)

Certain humans enjoy placing the heads of conquered beasts on their walls as a reminder of their prowess. Imagine how you’ll feel when you hang the head of a Tyrannosaurus rex on the wall of your hunting lodge.

You don’t have to be Steven Spielberg to accomplish this. You just have to pledge to 3D-Rex on Kickstarter.

The 3D-Rex project is offering up 3D-printed T. rex heads in various sizes. A small 3-inch skull runs $38. The wall-size 10-inch 3D-Rex, suitable for mounting, costs a pledge price of about $300. Okay, so it’s more like a baby T. rex, but it’s probably 100 percent more wall dinosaur than you have now.

This Micro-Penetrator Will Impregnate Distant Planets--With Science

After nearly a decade and billions of dollars in R&D costs, we’ve still barely scratched the surface of Mars. That sort of outlay just won’t work for exploring Jupiter’s moon Europa, especially since all the interesting parts of the moon—like its potential subterranean ocean—are encrusted with meters of ice. But with the help of the UK’s new space penetrator module, we may be able to inject our scientific devices meters deep into other celestial bodies.
