AMD FX-9560 5GHz CPU hits shelves in gaming PCs

AMD‘s flagship 5.0 GHz processor, the AMD FX-9560, has gone on sale, though the chip won’t be available as a standalone part for some time. The company will instead offer the new processor through various PC builders, including iBUYPOWER and Maingear, for those who want to be able to tell their friends they have the first commercially-available 5GHz chip.

amd_fx-9000_cpu

Back when it was first announced, in June, the FX-9000 series prompted no small amount of questions as to the necessity of such a high clock speed. Whereas, at one time, the gigahertz race was an integral part of AMD and Intel’s battle for computing dominance, in recent years the focus has evolved to consider more real-world relevant tasks.

That’s gone hand in hand with GPU-accelerated processing, where chips that would normally be used for rendering high-resolution games are instead turned to parallel crunching through huge sets of data. AMD itself is experimenting with the idea, as part of its Heterogeneous Computing push.

In contrast, the FX-9560 is about raw speed. That’s still going to appeal to some users, with AMD hoping they’ll head down to AVADirect, Canada Computers, CyberPower, iBUYPOWER, Digital Storm, Extreme PC, Maingear, Memory Express, NCIX, Origin PC, Puget Systems, or Velocity Micro, which are all signed up to use the new processor.

Under the hood the chip has eight of AMD’s Piledriver cores, and comes unlocked for easy overclocking; AMD even supplies the software to do it. However, gamers shouldn’t get too carried away: if they break their processor with an ill-advised overclock, they won’t be covered by AMD’s warranty.

Nokia Lumia 1020 hits pre-order as hardware teardowns begin

Nokia announced the Lumia 1020 last week, and right on schedule, AT&T has flipped the switch on pre-orders for the new device that packs in a 41MP camera. The carrier is accepting them now on their website, and you have your choice of color, as long as your favorite color is either yellow, black, or white.

The phone will cost $299 after signing a new two-year contract (or $660 off-contract), which is quite a bit for a new smartphone even considering its revolutionary camera technology on the inside, making it one of the more expensive on-contract phones to own currently. You can check out our hands-on of the device to learn more.

The Lumia 1020 will be available starting on July 23 and AT&T’s website lists the phone with a ship date of the 23rd, so if you order online, you won’t get your shiny new Lumia 1020 until at least a couple of days after the launch date of the device, which could be a problem for some people that don’t have the patience of waiting around. Furthermore, ordering online and picking up in the store isn’t available for the Lumia 1020 right now.

In slight-related news, the teardowns are beginning to arrive for Nokia’s new device, thanks to a disassembly manual that has popped up online that gives you a step-by-step on how to access the internal guts of the camera-equipped smartphone. It’s no iFixit teardown, but we should be that one sooner or later.

Nokia is also sending out an update for its Lumia range of Windows Phone device that will enable Bluetooth 4.0 in order to support newer fitness-tracking devices and accessories. The Verge says that sources have revealed that the update will allow compatibility with the Fitbit and a range of new accessories that Nokia will be outing soon. Most of Nokia’s Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices will be updated, since many of the devices include a Bluetooth 4.0 chip.

A Brief History of Speech Recognition’s Glorious Retrofuture

A Brief History of Speech Recognition's Glorious Retrofuture

In the two decades following World War II, it seemed there was no limit to technological growth. Sure, a computer was still the size of an entire room, and no one had telephones in their pockets. But techno-utopian ideas like flying cars and jetpacks and meal pills were all being taken very seriously as the inevitable fruits of science’s labor.

The Bradley Timepiece: A Watch That You Don’t Have to Watch

A company called Eone has come up with one of the most innovative wristwatches you’ll ever see. Unlike other timepieces that display or announce the time, The Bradley allows you to determine the time through touch. It’s a watch that can be used discreetly, but more importantly it’s a watch that blind people can use.

The Bradley has a Swiss quartz movement, but instead of a digital display or hands,it has two ball bearings. The one on its face indicates minutes, while the one embedded on the side indicates the hour. The ball bearings are connected to the movement via magnets. The hour and minute markers are fairly large and textured. In addition, the marker for the 12th hour has a distinct shape.

Here’s a demo of The Bradley:

So why is it called The Bradley? The watch was named after Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, a former bomb diffuser. Bradley lost his eyesight in 2011 when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan. But with the support of his loved ones, Bradley faced his new life head on. A year after he went blind, he won two gold medals and one silver medal for swimming at the 2012 Paralympics.

Pledge at least $128 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive a Bradley timepiece as a reward.
