If you dress up like a Jedi on a day that’s not October 31st (even if it is October 31st, actually), you’re probably going to be branded a geek. Wear that proudly! But if you dress up like a Jedi and do parkour tricks in the freaking desert like bouncing off rocks and double backflips and triple spins all while looking like you’re in a chase sequence for the next Star Wars movie, well, you’re an AWESOME geek that everyone is proud of.
UK’s O2 launches 4G service August 29th in London, Leeds and Bradford (updated)
Posted in: Today's ChiliSoon enough, the UK will have more than one choice for 4G data. Come August 29th, O2 will offer LTE in London, Leeds and Bradford, with expansion plans for an additional 13 cities by year’s end. Rates start a £26 per month — current provider EE’s cheapest is £21 — and you get a 30 day “Happiness Guarantee” when ordering directly from O2. If that isn’t enough of an incentive to buy direct (and pay a higher monthly price), the service provider is throwing in 12 months of free music content too. Keeping with the music theme, the telco is hosting a launch concert at its Sheperd’s Bush Empire venue, and will stream it to billboards across London. Who’s headlining the event is anyone’s guess at this point, as are full details on data package speeds, bandwidth caps and other pricing tiers.
Update: In case you were wondering, those who use O2’s network via Tesco Mobile or Giffgaff will also get the option of LTE, according to CNET, although it’s apparently too early to say when or for how much.

It has been more than two years since Facebook made it possible for users to enable a secure “https” connection for their account, something that had the side-effect of slightly longer loading times and reduced chances of hackery on public networks. Starting today, the social network will be making secure browsing its default following work […]
This video is pretty bizarre but hey who doesn’t like dinosaurs, mammoths, dragons, giant bugs and timelapse videos? The timelapse video was shot at Borrego Springs, California, a small town that fiercely protects the darkness of the night sky by regulating outdoor lighting. It’s apparently 1 of 4 communities in the world that are considered an official ‘Dark Sky Community’.

The DockPort standard is only just getting off the ground with support in AMD’s Elite Performance processors. TI could soon make the technology fly, however: its new (if awkwardly named) HD3SS2521 controller handles all the tasks of DockPort on a single chip. The hardware is both simpler and cheaper than past multi-chip designs, and makes it easier for laptops and tablets to deliver DisplayPort video, USB 3.0 and power through a single cable. Whether or not we see more DockPort-equipped mobile gadgets is another matter. While the TI chip is available today, device builders still have to choose DockPort over a more established standard like Intel’s Thunderbolt.
