Lisa Madigan Won’t Run For Governor Of Illinois

The Illinois attorney general said Monday she won’t run for governor next year because her father remains a top state legislator.

State Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D), who had been considered a front-runner against Gov. Pat Quinn (D), said in a statement that she would not run because her father, state House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), would remain in his post. Madigan instead said she will seek a fourth term as state attorney general.

“I feel strongly that the state would not be well served by having a governor and speaker of the House from the same family and have never planned to run for governor if that would be the case,” Lisa Madigan said in a statement to the Chicago Tribune. “With Speaker Madigan planning to continue in office, I will not run for governor.”

Carhenge Taken Over By Alliance, Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. — While it lacks the cultural significance of the original prehistoric monument found in England, western Nebraska’s junk-car tribute to Stonehenge remains a top tourist draw in state – even if it is more likely to attract gearheads than Druids.

If officials vote next week as expected, the western Nebraska city of Alliance will take control of Carhenge, the 26-year-old mashup monument to English prehistory and the American automobile.

(Credit: Carl Platon)

We’ve seen dresses that tweet before, but never one as political as this one that displays messages on gender equality, racism, and overpriced rents.

Creative agency Deportivo developed the Internet-connected Twitter Dress as a way to help Sweden’s youth be heard at Almedalen Week, an annual political summit that draws thousands of politicians, lobbyists, celebrities, and PR folk to the Swedish island of Gotland.

Verizon leak shows VZ Edge upgrade program: trade your phone in once you’ve paid off half of it

Verizon leak shows VZ Edge upgrade program trade your phone in once you've paid off half of it

T-Mobile’s been grabbing a lot of headlines lately with its consumer-friendly handset deals and upgrade programs, but it appears that Big Red has similar ideas. The folks at Droid Life have acquired a Verizon document detailing a new VZ Edge program that’ll allow folks to trade in their phones once they’ve paid off 50 percent of the purchase price. To join the program, Verizon will merely require a monthly fee of unknown amount, and in return, folks can get their upgrades early fee free and sans contract. When will customers get the option to do so? According to the doc, launch is scheduled for Q3, August 25th, to be exact. So, if Verizon can stick to its schedule, its customers are just under six weeks away from being free from the tyranny of the new every two upgrade cycle.

Why Can't Luggage For Adults Be As Wonderful As This Robo-Bag?

There’s an unwritten rule that luggage for adults has to have a fairly mundane and boring design. But when you’re waiting at the luggage carousel and realize that everyone else had the same idea to buy a red suitcase to stand out, you realize there has to be a better way. And there is, it’s just too bad the $40 Luggo here is only big enough to store a child’s wardrobe.

Utilite mini-PC crosses ARM with Linux and/or Android

In the Utilite mini-PC, if you’re all about working with open-source software, small form factor, and more ports than you know what to do with, the team at Compulab may have created just the monster you’re looking for. This week the creators of the Utilite have announced not only that the machine itself exists, but that they’ll be selling it in different configurations starting at under $100 USD. The smallest of these works with a Freescale i.M6 single-core processor and will be aiming to be just about as basic as possible.

Inside this device will be working with support for up to 4GB of RAM – though you’ll be working with less right out of the box – as well as 512MB built-in storage. There’s an mSATA solid state drive slot for additional space, and a SDXC card slot for 128GB more. You’ll also find four USB 2.0 ports and two RS232 serial ports. Don’t forget the USB OTG (micro-USB connector) as well.

This device can also be configured with dual or quad-core processors. Like the company’s other miniature oddities, MintBox, Fit-PC, and Tegra-based Trim Slice, this Utilite mini-PC aims to be as versatile as possible while remaining solid as a single-form machine. The whole beast remains 5.3″ x 3.9″ x 0.8″ (135mm x 100mm x 21mm) one way or the other.

The Utilite mini-PC can connect to devices wirelessly with 802.11b/g/n WiFi as well as Bluetooth 3.0, connecting to monitors with a HDMI out and single DVI port, the rest with S/PDIF and stereo audio jacks. You’ll also find 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as an extremely laid-back design, with white plastic on the front and back of this unit and a dark gray along the top.

The whole system will work with between 3 and 8 watts of power – unbelievable for a system that could very well work as a central control point for your many multiple home network systems. It’ll be up to you to decide what you’ll actually be controlling with this exercise in simplicity.

Clipper for iOS: Splice Together Mini-Movies in a Matter of Seconds

One of the great things about Vine and now Instagram, too, is the ability to stop filming and pick up right where you left off. It has the effect of producing more dynamic, interesting clips than you would otherwise. But that’s the problem—your’re stuck to clips. With Clipper, though, you can get that very same result without the time constraints.

Apple reportedly pitching ad skipping technology to cable companies

Apple reportedly pitching ad skipping technology to cable companies

Tim Stevens, forever known as a bearded legend and a dignified gentleman in the realm of Engadget, once placed a small sum of money into a charity bet with Gene Munster. At question, as you’ll likely surmise, was whether or not Apple would reinvent television before the end of the year. The outfit’s CEO has since upgraded the Apple TV from a hobby to an “area of intense interest,” and it seems that discussions are indeed in the works. Jessica Lessin, formerly of Wall Street Journal fame, has been known to break an Apple story or two, and she’s recently published a report that puts Apple and cable companies at the table to discuss the premise of ad skipping.

Simply put, Apple wants to offer consumers the ability to watch live and on-demand programming “over an Apple set-top box or TV” at a premium, with ads being skipped over and ISPs receiving a slice of the money. That money, of course, would seemingly have to trickle down to the companies who are getting (potentially) shafted when it comes to air time, but details surrounding that notion seem to be unclear. Of course, one could say that folks are already addicted to skipping ads, and if Apple’s crafting an idea to make anything from a phenomenon that’s already happening… well, you could certainly imagine one or two executives having a listen.
