Uber intros fare splitting for cost-conscious ridesharers

Uber brings fare splitting to its mobile apps

Few party-goers look forward to the math involved with paying for a shared cab ride home. Now that Uber supports fare splitting, they won’t have to: the company’s updated Android and iOS apps let passengers divide the cost equally. While friends must be Uber members to chip in, they only have to give their permission if someone has already hailed a car. The new apps won’t necessarily get cheapskate friends to pay up, but they could avoid a few headaches at the end of a long night.

Lumia 520 now world’s top Windows Phone as Nokia dominates market

While most people would think that flagship devices are the most popular, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes, it’s the budget devices that top the list, as is the case with Windows Phone. According to Windows Phone advertising company AdDuplex, the Nokia Lumia 520 is the world’s most popular Windows Phone handset.

Specifically, the Lumia 520 controls 13.3% of the total Windows Phone market, while Nokia itself owns a whopping 85% of the Windows Phone market, mostly thanks to the Finnish company’s big partnership with Microsoft. However, Windows Phone still has a long way to go before it catches up with iOS or Android.

However, that isn’t stopping Windows Phone sales. While the Lumia 520 hasn’t seen exponential growth, its sales have been doing nothing but rising since the phone’s release back in March. Sales numbers aren’t disclosed, since AdDuplex bases its numbers on app adoption.

Nonetheless, it seems Microsoft and Nokia have a hold on the budget device market, while Google, Samsung, HTC, and other big companies have a hold on the top-tier device market. However, Nokia is aiming their sights on that category as well. Their flagship Lumia 920 has been out for some time, and they just recently announced the 1020 with a 41MP camera attached.

As for other Nokia handsets, the Lumia 920 comes in second with 11.8% of the Windows Phone market, followed by the Lumia 620 with 9.6%. Six other Nokia Lumia phones make the list, but the HTC 8X gets sliver of the pie with 3.7% of the Windows Phone market share.

Let’s Hope These Self-Assembling Flat-Pack Structures Inspire Ikea

A bunch of geniuses from Harvard, MIT, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute are about to make your life a heck of a lot easier the next time you move into a new place. They’ve all been working together to develop flat-pack structures using shape memory polymers that can self-assemble into 3D structures when a charge is applied. Which means that one day assembling that Expedit bookshelf you got from Ikea could be as easy as plugging it in.

First Instagram movie trailer is a job for ‘Jobs’

Ashton Kutcher bares half to portray Steve Jobs.

Instagram may not be quite so instant anymore now that it supports video, but that hasn’t stopped the marketing juggernaut behind the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic from using the platform to debut what the studio calls the world’s first Instagram trailer.

The trailer is 15 seconds worth of dramatic music, slow-motion shots of Ashton Kutcher with a beard, and inspiring dialog about crazy, misfit rebels. It’s pretty much like the first full theatrical trailer for the film, except shorter. There’s just as much shirtless Kutcher involved, though.

The content of the trailer isn’t breaking new ground, but it may well start a trend of super-short movie promo videos on Instagram. It’s for people who don’t have the patience to watch 60 seconds worth of mater… [Read more]

Beautiful space photography tops Australian contest

Here at Crave, we love space photography, and this year’s David Malin Awards produced some stunners.

Amateur astronomers and photographers from around Australia vied for top honors — and thousands of dollars in equipment from Canon — in the contest, which was judged by David Malin, the renowned astrophotographer for whom the awards were named.

Winning images were chosen based on their ability to capture the beauty of the sky, and the photographer’s interest in astronomy, in an “aesthetically pleasing way.” Martin Pugh emerged as overall winner, taking the grand prize of a 5D Mark III and EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM lens for his image titled “NGC 3718.”

The permanent exhibition of this year’s winning photos is on display now at the Parkes Observatory. A touring exhibit will stop at locations across Australia, with the first held at Sydney Observatory starting in August. More details on the images themselves, and the winners, can be found in our gallery below, and on the Central West Astronomical Society’s page.
