Metal Core Door Decals add some Sci-Fi décor to your home

Many of us have spent countless hours watching various Sci-Fi shows in our past. Whether it’s Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, or any other number of shows, you always feel like you’ve been transported to another time and place. If you’re like me, you’ve also wished that for just a while, you could actually immerse yourself in one of those futuristic fantasy worlds. Well now you can add a little something to your home that will give it that science fiction feel.

The Metal Core Door Wall Graphic Decals are the perfect way to turn your spare bedroom into a futuristic laboratory. Or maybe that hall closet is really a freight elevator that leads to an underground bunker. Okay, so you’ll still need a healthy dose of imagination for these, but they are still pretty cool.

Each one measures 32” x 80”, which is large enough to cover most standard doors. You’ve got your choice of an Airlock, Armory, Freight Elevator, or a Lab Door. Once you make your choice, you’ll just need to unroll the decal, and affix it to the door of your choice. It used a low-tack adhesive to stay in place, which is great, because you can actually take it down and reuse the decal elsewhere, without needing to do anything else. If you want one of these for your home, you’re looking at a $60 investment for each one.

The iPhone Didn’t Kill Cameras, It Made Us Want Better Ones

The iPhone Didn't Kill Cameras, It Made Us Want Better Ones

The Wall Street Journal pointed out today that while sales of point-and-shoot cameras have declined steadily over the past few years, DSLRs and other interchangeable-lens cameras have been doing great. That’s right. People don’t want to just take more photos than ever, they want to take better photos, with big-kid cameras. And that’s not in spite of the smartphone revolution. It’s because of it.

Dupont Working on Wireless Charging Countertops

Do you leave your phone on the kitchen table a lot? If you do, then you’ll be pleased to know that it won’t just be sitting there idly, thanks to a collaboration between DuPont Building Innovations and the Power Matters Alliance.

Dupont Countertop Charger

They’ve come up with a surface that can charge smartphones and other devices wirelessly. They basically took Powermat’s wireless charging technology and embedded that within Corian solid surfaces. The latter is basically a synthetic, granite alternative that’s often used for countertops.

This new technology isn’t just for kitchen counters. The surface can also be installed on nightstands and coffee tables. The DuPont-PMA team up is especially exciting. Who knows? We might soon see countertop chargers installed in public spaces soon.

All Good Things

Image

I still remember the comments on my welcome letter when I took over the site on a sunny day in early 2011. It was beautiful outside and here I was sweating bullets in a tiny NYC hotel room, watching the reaction in comments and elsewhere. Needless to say there was more than a little hate, but there was so much warmth and optimism and welcome it really powered me through what ultimately became a very long, very good day. That support carried me past more than two incredibly challenging, hugely rewarding years.

And so it’s with heavy heart that I say that I’m stepping away. Those early days in 2011 were an incredible challenge, and if I’m frank it never really got any easier, with the dawn of new competition and an incredible evolution in the quality of tech journalism over the past few years. We’ve always had our work cut out for us at Engadget, and I’m hugely proud of how our team rose to the challenge, recently winning numerous awards for content, video and design and, most importantly, maintaining the respect of the Engadget brand.

It goes without saying that I had a great opportunity to shape Engadget and I always strove to turn it into a site that everyone, on both sides of the aisle, respected. Respect is the most important thing for me, and those who worked under me at Engadget have earned my eternal respect. I hope you’ll give them the same. In the end, I look forward to reading all the comments that this post elicits. I won’t be able to reply to them all, but do know that I am so incredibly thankful for your support over the years, even to the haters. Without your hard licks I, and the entire Engadget team, wouldn’t have been as driven to exceed as we have always been.

As for me? Well, I don’t have any specific plans for the moment, but let’s just say I’m looking forward to taking a little break before dealing the next hand. The sky’s the limit.

ZTE Geek claims world’s first Tegra 4 phone title

We’ve known about the ZTE Geek in the past, but very few details were known at that point, other than that it was running Intel’s Atom Z2580 SoC. However, today we’re being treated with what appears to be an unveiling of the ZTE Geek, running an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, making it the world’s first Tegra 4-equipped smartphone.

This ZTE Geek is the same one as the Intel Atom-powered version, but the Tegra 4 model will be available on China Mobile. The company shared some product shots on a Chinese forum ahead of the official announcement of the device. Details and specs of the new device still are not yet known officially, but leaks indicate the phone will pack quite a punch.

The Tegra 4 quad-core chip is said to be clocked at 1.8GHz and will have 2GB of RAM. Covering up the internals will be a 5-inch 1080p display with Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean running the show on the software end. There’s also an 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash and a 2MP shooter on the front for those inevitable selfies.

This is the first smartphone to carry the Tegra 4, and it’ll only be available on China Mobile for now, so a North American release may never happen, or we could see an international version pop up at some point, but specs could change if that happens. It probably won’t be long anyway until a Tegra 4-equipped smartphone lands in the US, as well as other parts of the world. It’ll only be a matter of time.

Researchers Use Circuit Printer to Make Functional Heart Muscle

Growing replacement organs in a lab and transplanting them is science-fiction dream-turned-very-possible-reality, but so far it’s been limited to simple tissues. Today, MIT researchers published findings on their successful attempts to build functional heart tissue, using a modified machine originally meant to build integrated circuits.
