Thom Yorke pulls recent tracks from Spotify in protest against low pay for new artists

Thom Yorke pulls latest album from Spotify in protest against low royalties

The artist famed for fronting Radiohead, and not so much for toeing the line, has withdrawn his solo tracks from Spotify and some smaller streaming services in order to highlight the low payments given to new musicians. Thom Yorke explained the decision by re-tweeting his producer, Nigel Godrich, who had complained that “new artists get paid f^@k all,” and that the current streaming model only suits those with an existing back catalog. Yorke added that Spotify shareholders “will shortly be rolling in it,” implying that the distribution of wealth is unfair. Some followers reacted badly to his decision, accusing him of “hurting his fans” with a “small [and] meaningless rebellion,” but others spoke out in support — including electronic artist Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden) who said he’d pulled his music off Spotify for the same reason.

Spotify responded to the criticism this morning in a statement provided to TechCrunch, saying that it is “still in the early stages of a long-term project,” and adding that “we’ve already paid $500 million to rightsholders so far and by the end of 2013 this number will reach $1 billion.” The spokesperson further went on to say that “we’re 100% committed to making Spotify the most artist-friendly music service possible, and are constantly talking to artists and managers about how Spotify can help build their careers.” Yorke is hardly the first star to make a stand, but unlike Coldplay, Adele and the rest, his specific focus on industry newcomers (rather than himself) is — we’ve gotta say — quite refreshing.

Sony Xperia Z successor due later this year: 20MP Xperia i1 Honami incoming?

While Sony’s Xperia Z is still making headlines, it seems the company is already thinking ahead about what will replace the flagship device. We’ve heard rumors and have seen leaks of the so-called Xperia i1 “Honami”, which looks to be a worthy successor to the Xperia Z from what we’ve seen, and Sony Korea’s CEO thinks such a device will launch later this year.

A report notes that Sony’s Korea CEO Kenji Sakai says that the successor the Xperia Z will be out sometime later this year. This phone is suggested to be the Xperia i1 Honami, which we’ve seen in the recent past as a 20MP smartphone that is said to pack the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

With the rumored phone’s upgraded camera, it will take on the recently-announced Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. The 1020 comes with an impressive 41MP camera that aims to revolutionize smartphone cameras, and while we still have yet to try the phone’s camera out for ourselves, Sony will mostly likely have to out something big in order to overthrow the 1020.

As for a focused release window for the i1 Honami, Sony isn’t saying much, but we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw the rumored device make an appearance at IFA 2013 in September. The only question that remains is when the device will release in the US. Like some of Sony’s past phones, the US may not see the i1 Honami until after its initial release over in Asia.

Apple WWDC 2013 developer session videos released in full [Updated]

Apple’s WWDC 2013 developer session videos have turned up on YouTube, giving an insider insight into what’s due in iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks later this year. The footage – nearly 100 videos including covering the changes in AirPrint, how best to make use of iAd, and how OS X push notifications will work – offers non-developers a glimpse of the goodies that registered iOS/OS X developers have had access to for some time.

wwdc_2013-580x396

As has been the case for some years now, tickets for WWDC 2013 sold out ridiculously quickly. In fact, it took less than two minutes for all of the spaces to go, despite them costing $1,599 apiece.

The lure is the opportunity to get early access to Apple’s upcoming platforms for mobile and desktop, as well as the chance to discuss them with the company’s own engineers. Apple holds multiple developer sessions over the course of the five day event.

What’s unclear is how the videos play into Apple’s WWDC NDA (non-disclosure agreement), which developers are expected to agree to. That’s intended to prevent features Apple hasn’t necessarily publicly talked about from leaking; it’s unclear who has uploaded these videos, and whether it was Apple itself.

If not, then the channel itself is likely to be shut down in short order. For a top-level view on OS X Mavericks, check out our preview.

Update: Apple has confirmed that the video uploads are not authorized by them, and that they will be removed shortly.
