Head of Google China, Dr. John Liu, stepping down after six years

After six years of overseeing Google’s operations in China, Dr. John Liu is stepping down “to pursue other opportunities.” During his tenure, we’ve seen the search engine struggle with censorship, almost get banned in the country and let’s not forget the Aliyun OS debacle. Google says Scott Beaumont, who currently deals with European partnerships, will take over Liu’s role starting in mid-August, though, it admits he has no experience of doing business in China. As for Google’s future in the country, it’s not the search leader, but Android seems to be well loved.

Golf Cart Hovercraft

Golf is not a cheap hobby or sport, at least relatively speaking. First of all, there is the issue of membership fees at a golf club of your choice, and obviously the more exclusive it is, the more expensive it will be! When it comes to equipment and the choice of clothing, golf too, would edge out other sports like say, chess, table tennis, swimming, and even running, and with that, the cost would also be a whole lot more for golf. I guess if you really want to be extravagant about the sport (while getting the approval from your other half along the way, of course), then you would not mind forking out the dough for this $58,000 Golf Cart Hovercraft.

Yes sir, you read that right. The Golf Cart Hovercraft is one golf cart that you would most probably not see anywhere else, as it glide over sand traps and water hazards without batting an eyelid, doing so on a cushion of air – and it will also traverse just as easily over fairways and the rough. What powers the Golf Cart Hovercraft would be a 65-hp twin-cylinder Hirth engine, with a nine-blade axial-flow ducted fan that propels the craft to speeds of up to 45 mph and 9″ off the ground, ensuring that the greens (and other small animals) will not be harmed. Heck, this is good enough to cross a pond or stream, too.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite launching on July 28th for $800

dnp Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite goes

Last month, Samsung gave us a look at two new ATIV Book 9 Ultrabooks, both of which will replace the company’s famed Series 9 lineup. While the ATIV Book 9 Plus, with its QHD+ display and brand-new Haswell chip, may be a tad more exciting than the Book 9 Lite with its unspecified quad-core processor, it’s the latter machine that’s getting US pricing info today. At the end of the month, Samsung will offer the Book 9 Lite for $800. That relatively affordable sum gets you a 13.3-inch, 1,366 x 768 capacitive touchscreen, 128 gigs of SSD storage, AMD Radeon graphics and up to 5.5 hours of battery life.

In our brief hands-on time, we found both the Plus and Lite models to be comfortable; the main differences are the Plus’ superior processor, higher-res display and slightly sleeker design. While both machines seem like solid options, we’d be remiss not to mention that the Plus will likely get a US launch date of its own very soon — and its higher-end specs could make it worth the wait. If you’re already set on the ATIV Book 9 Lite, though, you can get your pre-order on now at Samsung’s site, or look for the machine in stores starting on July 28th.

Surface smartwatch tipped to clad tweaked-Windows in transparent metal

Microsoft’s Surface team has taken on development of the company’s upcoming smartwatch, it’s reported, with the wrist-worn gadget supposedly running a modified version of Windows 8. The Surface smartwatch is being built on an original design by the Xbox team, The Verge‘s sources claim, which had been tinkering with a “Joule” heart-rate monitor prototype for the Xbox 360.

Speculation as to the capabilities of the watch have varied, though Microsoft is believed to be making its wearable more functional than some of the existing designs we’ve seen. A modified version of Windows 8 is an ambitious strategy, where existing alternatives like Pebble are more accurately remote displays for the user’s phone.

According to the leaks, the Surface smartwatch is intended to be integrated with other Windows-powered devices, which presumably means both Windows 8 on desktops, notebooks, and tablets, and Windows Phone on handsets. Already suggested is a 1.5-inch display, making the watch bigger than Pebble and other options.

Meanwhile, there’s also talk of customization support with different colored watchbands. AmongTech claimed last week that Microsoft would offer red, blue, yellow, black, white, and grey straps, something The Verge says it has independently confirmed.

Still in the air are other suggestions from the site’s sources, which include a casing made of Oxynitride Aluminum that, as well as being tougher than glass, is also transparent, and both 6GB of storage and integrated LTE. The latter seems a tall order, given the power consumption of 4G radios and the minimal space for batteries in smartwatches, though it’s said to be part of Microsoft’s attempt to integrate the Surface watch with its various cloud services.

One workaround to the power issue is Microsoft making the smartwatch particularly easy to recharge, something implied by rumors back in April that it would use the magnetic Surface connector already used on the detachable keyboards.

Microsoft isn’t the only company believed to be working on a smartwatch. Intel has confirmed it has a design in R&D, while Dell too has said it is investing in wearables.

Most frequently rumored, however, is the Apple iWatch, which is believed to be the Cupertino firm’s attempt to bring iOS to the wrist. That, however, isn’t expected to launch until sometime in 2014.
