DekkoScan iOS App Brings Real World Objects to Minecraft: Why Build When You Can Scan?

We’ve seen a number of ways to transform objects made in Minecraft into physical items. But what if you want to the opposite? That’s the idea behind DekkoScan, an upcoming iOS app that uses your mobile device’s camera to scan physical objects and “cubify” them. Take this creepy inflatable owl for example:

Now here it is terrorizing Minecraft:

According to Dekko developer and Redditor portemantho, when the app is done scanning you just press its “Generate” button and it will “send a zip to your saves folder or to MCEdit.” But don’t embark on an epic quest to scan the Earth just yet. Portemantho admitted that because DekkoScan is resource-intensive, it’s scans are limited to a resolution of 128 x 128 and is more suited to scanning objects up close. Portemantho also said that the app currently uses wool blocks, but that can easily be changed with a future update. Here’s a very brief demo of the app:

As of this writing DekkoScan is still awaiting approval at the App Store. But again, the app is quite the resource hog and will only work on newer devices: iPad 2 & up, and iPhone 4S & 5. Portemantho said they will eventually release an Android port. Soon you’ll be able to build an object in Minecraft, 3D print that object, then use DekkoScan to take that 3D print back to Minecraft. Ad infinitum. Time well spent, life well lived.

Physical Fliike Counter Shows off How Many ‘Likes’ You Have on Facebook

Let people in the real world know how popular you are in real life with Fliike. It’s a physical counter that shows off how many “Likes” your page has received on Facebook in real time.

The Fliike was created by Smiirl, which is a design studio start-up based in France.

fliike facebook like counter 1

The Fliike basically connects to your Facebook page via Wi-Fi and transmits every “like” that you’ve received onto the flipboard-like counter. Personal pages won’t have much use for it, but pages for commercial purposes might, just so that establishment can show people that they’ve got a strong virtual presence.

A limited number of Fliikes are available for pre-order for $390(USD) (yes, $390!) If you’re more popular than 99,999 likes, Smiirl can add an extra numerical column to your Fliike to accommodate your massive popularity. The first batch ships out this November.

Clippy hits the road as Office 365 expands to 38 new countries

Almost five months after its debut, Office 365 is getting 38 new passport stamps. Clippy’s hitting such exotic locales as Fiji, the Bahamas and Barbados, and it’s even picking up new languages along the way. The subscription-based productivity suite now includes support for Vietnamese, Arabic and Malay. What’s more, Redmond is happily accepting five new currencies for payment, too. Brazil, Hong Kong, Mexico, Malaysia and India can all use their native money to pay for the software as a service. Sadly, there’s still no word from Microsoft about accepting Bitcoins.

Valve debuts Pipeline, a portal for teens seeking the greatest internship ever

DNP Valve debuts Pipeline,

Valve is proving its unicorn status amongst game developers once again. This time, by hiring a group of handsome teenagers to work within its secretive walls. Pipeline is the latest experiment from the company famous for resonance cascades, and its focus is prepping high schoolers for a career in game design. The website was created by these interns to answer inquiries teenagers consistently ask Valve; questions pertaining to college choice, areas of study and what it’s like to work on video games. In the team’s self-created clip, video editor Nathaniel says Pipeline is a test to see how a group of younger employees can adapt to the company’s unique organizational structure.

The site’s mainly a FAQ right now, but the plan is to build it around user-submitted queries. Pipeline’s illustrator Melanie promises future video series and interviews covering different aspects of development including art, sound design and filming. If Newell and co.’s newest employees being barely older than Gordon Freeman’s first adventure doesn’t make you jealous, this just might: They probably know more about Half-Life 3 than you.

BlackBerry A10 appears in video, 5-inch display and all

What you’re about to see would very much appear to be the next-generation BlackBerry smartphone code-named BlackBerry A10 Aristo. This device has been rumored to be the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone to be working with a 5-inch display, aiming to take on the likes of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 in the handheld market while the original BlackBerry Z10′s display size lacks punch. This device takes on an appearance much like the Z10, working instead with a white bar of plastic on its bottom instead of both its bottom and its top.

biggie

This device is not, in this case, joined by one whole heck of a lot of detail as we assume the videographer does not want to be identified as such. What we’re seeing here matches up quite well, on the other hand, with the tips for this device thus far. That’s the possibility of a 1280 x 720 resolution spilled over a 5-inch display with AMOLED technology and a very, very similar design language for the hardware as a whole.

The model of this device we’ve seen so far has been set for AT&T, while this video would appear to be filmed in Vietnam. It’s very possible that the first versions of the device would be constructed in Vietnam and still headed for the USA carried by AT&T, of course, but such a location could imply the machine were headed anywhere. BlackBerry’s main market concern at the moment is the USA.

lookin

This surfacing of images and video follows recent disheartening news from the company on their most recent quarterly earnings well inside the BlackBerry 10 era of smartphone devices. There’s been a BlackBerry Z10 subsidy increase after relatively terrible sales and a promise of BlackBerry 10.2 as BlackBerry 10.1 just hits the wild.

Meanwhile the BlackBerry Q5 is well on its way to the hands of consumers with Thorsten Heins, CEO of the company, suggesting that one more BlackBerry 7 device will be approaching soon. That device would be the BlackBerry 9720, an updated bit of hardware on the back of the QWERTY phones of old.

Both the BlackBerry A10 and BlackBerry 9720 are rumored to be hitting the market well within 2013.

Purported BlackBerry A10 ‘Aristo’ briefly flaunted in video leak

Purported BlackBerry A10 'Aristo' briefly flaunted in video leak

Hot on the heels of the BlackBerry Z10 getting an update to BB 10.1 and price cuts at various retailers, a future model to come out of Waterloo has apparently been leaked. In a video posted to YouTube, accessory maker Vivix gives a brief look at what’s purported to be the A10 “Aristo.” According to N4BB, the device sports a five-inch touchscreen, dual-core processor with a quad-core GPU and an eight-megapixel camera — not to mention it matches up with a previously leaked image. Details are sparse beyond all that, but you can at least grab look for yourself in the video after the break.

Samsung files for phone/tablet docking device trademark in USA

This week the folks at Samsung have suggested – without saying so to the public – that they’re not about to let ASUS leave them in the dust with a phone that docks into a tablet. While Samsung’s device isn’t exactly the same as the ASUS Padfone, the trademark we’re seeing here doesn’t put it all that far off from the mark. This filing number D685,774 suggests Samsungs machine wouldn’t bring on a traditional form for the tablet dock or smartphone itself, on the other hand.

sg_asus_mwc2013_10

The rather interesting differentiator between ASUS’ solution and the Samsung patent filing is the shape of the two components. While the ASUS machine – each of several generations of the Padfone, that is, work with a smartphone that could very well pass off for a stand-alone smartphone without the tablet, Samsung’s device looks a bit more like the letter T.

bolt

With the top of the smartphone having a swoop outward to the left and to the right, this smartphone fits in with its tablet dock like a glove. The tablet then has a pocket and indents where the smartphone will slide, the final product looking a lot more like a traditional tablet – however thick – than any previous amalgamation, Samsung or ASUS-made.

This would be a logical next step for Samsung, a company that’s no stranger to docking – and to docking one machine inside another in a way that makes the two seem like they belong together. With the Samsung Galaxy Note series, the S-Pen docks in the tablet flush, flat and ready to be hidden in a normal everyday day’s use. The same would be true of this Samsung tablet/phone hybrid.

Samsung also brings the ATIV Q to combine the worlds of Android, Windows 8, tablet, and notebook – and it has a docking S-Pen too. The Samsung ATIV Tab 3 brings the Galaxy tablet form to Windows 8, docking this tablet in with a keyboard as well as an S-Pen to boot. What’s next?
