Pacific Rim Kaiju Monster Stomps Through Qualcomm Stadium

I’m totally stoked that Pacific Rim is finally hitting theaters today. I can’t wait to go see it and watch giant robots battle giant monsters on the IMAX screen. While awaiting the arrival of the film on the big screen, one of the giant Kaiju monsters apparently made its presence known at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

The creature left gigantic footprints around the parking lot and inside of the stadium, before returning to the ocean.

Obviously, the footprints weren’t left by an actual monster. At least I don’t think so. I’ve been told they were created as a promotional stunt for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, to promote Pacific Rim and the Pacific Rim Kaiju Battle Android game. Still, the effort to create these massive footprints was gargantuan. Here are some stats on the footprints and how they were made:

  • 32,000 sq ft of industrial grade material, with 28,400 sq ft of printable area
  • Made up of scrim vinyl and 7oz poly-lined black out material
  • 56 rolls of scrim material, 150ft long each
  • 6000 ft of industrial adhesive compound tape
  • 72 hours of non-stop printing
  • 80 liters of ink (60 cases)
  • The layout of one footprint spans the length of 40 8-ft tables
  • Sewing together the footprints took 28 hours on industrial sewing machines
  • Each footprint weighed about 480 pounds, and it took 12 people to carry each one into position

There’s no sign of any Jaeger prints in the area, so you’d better keep your eyes peeled if you’re in the San Diego area.

Nokia Lumia 1020 announced – is it the end of entry level digital cameras?

Ever since the digital camera module was introduced into a smartphone, it was safe to assume that one day, the average dedicated digital camera would suffer a drop in sales, as most folks would just use their smartphone cameras to capture memories wherever they go. The day has not yet arrived, but it is definitely close with the recent announcement of the Nokia Lumia 1020 – a smartphone which boasts of a massive 41-megapixel sensor as well as optical image stabilization (OIS) that have surpassed existing benchmarks of smartphone photography. We are talking about unmatched picture detail and quality with an effortless capture, edit and sharing features here.

For starters, Nokia claims that they have reinvented zoom through the combination of their next-generation 41-megapixel sensor, ZEISS optics with half a dozen lenses and OIS. This would allow the Lumia 1020 camera to zoom into the details of every shot, where it over-samples the results so that your digital memories look sharper and clearer than ever before. Since you might be rather new to this digital photography thing, the Lumia 1020 allows you to point and shoot without worrying about missing the moment, as you can, at a later time, reframe the photo thanks to the new Nokia Pro Camera application.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 will support LTE networks where applicable, and it comes with a 4.5” AMOLED WXGA (1280×768) touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla 3 Glass, a 2,000 mAh battery, wireless charging support, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, their piece de resistance – a PureView 41-megapixel with optical image stabilization with Xenon and LED flash, a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, 7GB of free SkyDrive cloud storage, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, all crammed into a body that weighs just 158 grams. The Nokia Lumia 1020 will arrive in yellow, white and black colors, shipping to the US on AT&T first this July 26th at $299.99 a pop – obviously with a 2-year contract, of course, before making its way to China and Western Europe later this quarter.

Chess Piece Flash Drive: Savemate

It’s been a while since I featured a product from Brando, and I have to say I’m slightly disappointed with what they recently showed to us. It’s a USB drive shaped like a king chess piece. I know right? A perfectly reasonable, gift ready gadget that doesn’t make you want to bash your head against the wall in confusion? What’s going on at Brando?

The only weird thing about it it’s that Brando calls it a Chess Flash Drive. And it’s not even that weird! They just accidentally a word.

If you’re looking for a gift for a chess fan, get this from Brando. It sells for $16 to $38 (USD) depending on the capacity you want. Meanwhile I’ll be here mourning the end of an era.

Tactile watch for blind shows time with ball bearings

(Credit: Kickstarter)

Here’s something tremendously useful that you’d imagine would have been invented a long time ago: a robust, intuitive watch for blind people that can easily be read by touch.

The Bradley timepiece concept indicates the time with moving ball bearings — one on the side of the case for the hour and one on the face for the minutes.

The simplicity of the idea also appeals to sighted people. After only a single day on Kickstarter, it has more than doubled its $40,000 fundraising goal and is fast approaching $100,000.

Tactile watches, along with timepieces that announce the time, are already available, but Eone Timepieces, which created the Bradley, notes that they require lifting up a cover to feel the hands, which can be delicate.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner catches fire after being cleared to fly again

In another streak of bad luck for Boeing, the first of the 50 or so 787 Dreamliners was cleared to fly again by the FAA. The Ethiopian Airlines 787 successfully completed a test flight the first time around, but it seems trouble struck again, as a fire broke out on the plane at London’s Heathrow airport. Luckily, no passengers were on board.

Boeing is obviously aware of the issue and has provided an official statement on their Twitter account, saying that they’re “aware of the 787 event…and have Boeing personnel there.” The company is currently “working to fully understand and address this.” The cause of the fire is currently unknown at this point, but it’s said that the situation is similar to that of what happened at Boston’s Logan airport when the planes first started catching on fire.

This is obviously terrible news for Boeing, and it seems like a incredibly bad luck on their part. Again, the cause of the fire is currently unknown, but we have no reason to not believe that the fire could’ve been cause by another failed battery. The 787 was initially grounded by the FAA back in January after problems with the battery caused fires on several of the planes.

From the photos taken by onlookers, there doesn’t appear to be any noticeable damage to the outside of the plane, although you can clearly see fire-retardant foam covering the ground around the plane. It’s possible that the fire was concealed inside of the aircraft where the battery compartment is located.

Arrivals and departures were temporarily suspended at Heathrow while emergency crews attended to the situation, but Heathrow officials recently lifted the suspension after the situation was brought to control. At the time, the 787 was parked on a remote parking stand, so it was out of the way for the most part.

Google Street View's Greatest, Weirdest Hits

Google Street View has something of a history for catching us in our more—uh, delicate states. And our more defecatory states. And our more dead states. While the latter is mostly just depressing, the rest are almost always delightful. And luckily for us, Captain-Obviouss has kindly prompted his fellow Redditors to compile "the most WTF things" that Google’s version of Earth has to offer. Here are our favorites so far.
