With Cal, Any.DO hopes to bring its productivity magic to calendars (hands-on)

DNP AnyDO Cal handson

When Any.DO — the brains behind the popular iOS to-do app — announced Cal for iOS last month, we had high hopes for its take on calendar functionality. Starting today, Cal will be available for download in the App Store, but we had a chance to play with it early to see what it was all about. The app marks the company’s initial foray into a full-blown suite of productivity apps (as teased in their press release below), which will include, at some indeterminate point in the future, Any.DO’s own e-mail app. Any.DO is determined to hit a home run with its life-management line, but does Cal live up to the hype? Read on to find out.

Digital Storm’s 13.3-inch VELOCE gaming laptop grants Haswell power savings, HD gameplay for $1,535 on July 17

Image

Digital Storm’s mostly known for its many desktop gaming rigs, but it dabbles in laptops, too. Its latest portable offering, the VELOCE, comes packing a 13.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 display, a quad-core Haswell Core i7 4800MQ CPU and NVIDIA GTX 765M graphics. It’s also got 8GB of RAM and 2GB of graphics memory along with three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, VGA out, and Bluetooth 4.0. Storage comes in the form of a hybrid drive comprised of a 7,200RPM 750GB HDD and an 8GB SATA SSD. All that hardware tips the scales at 4.6 pounds and is 1.26 inches thick — sizing right in line with its 14-inch competition from MSI, but roughly twice the girth and a half-pound heavier than a Razer Blade. Regardless, those yearning for a VELOCE of their own can grab one at Digital Storm’s website should they be willing to part with $1,535 come July 17th.

Verizon roadmap leaks Moto X and HTC One release dates

Those looking to get a better handle on how long they’ll have to wait before their beloved Motorola Moto X and/or HTC One will be waiting to hit Verizon will be able to rejoice today. A roadmap tipping the release dates of devices through the end of August has been leaked, here showing not just the Verizon HTC One, not just the Motorola Moto X, but machines from Samsung and LG as well.

HTC-One-Red-three-view-580x422

The roadmap sets the stage for the HTC One to hit on the first of August, putting it at three weeks away – to the day – from today. That’s also well within the bounds of several other key releases from other companies aiming to eat the HTC One’s camera domination lunch, namely the Nokia Lumia 1020 with its 41-megapixel sensor. Will 10x the megapixels make up the difference?

Verizon also has the “Motorola X”, aka Moto X set for the 23rd of August. At that point we’re still calling it a far-off sort of drop, but with the machine having leaked essentially in full several times over already, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Motorola reveal the device well before then, with pre-orders starting closer to the beginning of the month. For more information on the Moto X, head down the rabbit hole with SlashGear’s Moto X tag portal.

This leaked roadmap comes from PhoneArena, mind you, and it points to several other odd devices as well. There’s an LG Exalt, a basic flip phone with “largest display available” on said sort of device with “crystal-clear sound quality” to boot. You’ve got NFL Mobile 2013 launching the same day as the HTC One, this version likely to have additional abilities and streaming boosts.

There’s a Samsung Convoy 3 set to replace the Convoy 2 on the 15th of August, a prepaid phone addition in the Samsung Stellar, and boosts to “Verizon FamilyBase”. This is an update to the current Verizon Usage Controls with added functionality and bits and pieces like family based pricing. Exciting stuff!

Clap-Off Bra Deserves a Standing Ovation

Here’s an invention that would go well with the Clapper: a bra that unclasps when you clap. Now that’s a reason to turn the lights down low. You’d think this gadget would be a hit on the Internet, but its Kickstarter was actually a massive flop. I am disappoint. Or not.

clap off bra by randy sarafan

Instructables member Randy Sarafan posted instructions to make the silly undergarment. But he didn’t come up with the concept; he only tried to replicate a novelty item that’s apparently already being sold in Syrian markets. Here’s a NSFW demo of the bra:

The fact that the bra already exists may be one of the reasons why Randy’s Kickstarter didn’t succeed. We need someone to import the thing; not invent it. Then again I think his cheesy pitch video is mostly to blame. As of now it seems like it’s easier to build the bra than negotiate with the Syrian lingerie experts, so head to Instructables for Randy’s walkthrough.

RIAA cutting file-sharer fine in exchange for anti-piracy campaign

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is no stranger to laying down the law on those who illegal download copyrighted content, but a recent case has an interesting settlement attached. The RIAA is giving infamous file-sharer Jammie Thomas-Rasset the choice to represent an anti-piracy campaign in exchange for a lower fine.

Pirates-suggest-Copyright-Alert-System-inefficient-with-crowdsource-tests

The court case involving the RIAA and Thomas-Rasset has lasted seven years so far, but it seems like things are coming to a close. Thomas-Rasset was sued for illegally sharing 24 songs online, and after the US Supreme Court declined to hear Thomas-Rasset’s appeal, the RIAA said that it would would reduce her fine, which stands at $222,000 currently.

The fine would be reduced as long as Thomas-Rasset made a public service announcement that would campaign against online piracy through the RIAA. It’s quite the ultimatum, but it wasn’t disclosed what the fine would be reduced to if Thomas-Rasset agreed to the proposal.

One of the big reasons why this court case has been so huge lately is that Thomas-Rasset became the first person to refuse to settle with the RIAA, and instead chose to let the RIAA take the case to court. The settlement cost was only $3,500, but Thomas-Rasset could end up paying way more than a few grand.

Her attorney said that she “is pretty opposed” to the proposal of making a public service announcement for the RIAA, and it’s possible that Thomas-Rasset will be filing for bankruptcy protection in order to evade the damages that she would be getting. However, the case is still ongoing, so it’s possible things may change in the near future.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Hands On: This Actually Might Be Amazing

Nokia Lumia 1020 Hands On: This Actually Might Be Amazing

The first question you’ll have about Nokia’s new Lumia 1020 is how the photos look. And yes, they’re so very sharp. But what may have been overlooked is that the rest of the phone, which is still, you know, a phone, is (almost surprisingly) on point too.

Google’s One Today Android app now open to all US-based philanthropists

Google's One Today Android app now open to all USbased philanthropists

“Do a little. Change a lot.” That’s the motto behind One Today — a Google-built app that launched a few months ago to those who requested an invite. Now, however, it’s free to download for all Android users in the United States, enabling those who do to donate a dollar per day (or more, of course) to an ever-changing list of nonprofit organizations. Each day a new project will be showcased, replete with details on what it’s about, who it’s helping and how it’s operated. Naturally, you’ll be able to make your donations public on Google+, and you can keep a log of your charitable givings within the app itself — ideal for tax writeoffs. There’s still no word on when it’ll go global, but statesiders can hit the source link to begin their download.
