iPhone electric scooter might tempt texters

(Credit: Terra Motors)

Like many people who are getting sick of cars, my friend ditched his Saab for a sky-colored Vespa. It doesn’t quite live up to its nickname of Blue Thunder, but it’s a hassle-free, old-school ride that costs very few shekels at the pump.

Terra Motors, the Tokyo startup that recently launched an electric tuk-tuk, has unveiled something even more appealing: an electric scooter with an iPhone dock.

The A4000i can link to your phone and display data on power consumption, remaining battery charge, average speed, and mileage, as well as navigation information via an app.

The company is calling it the first bike of its kind to enter mass production, and it plans to start turning them out at a factory in Vietnam in December.

Kremlin finds way to avoid leaks: Typewriters

Is this the future of national security?

(Credit: Conrad.com screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

Dust off your Olivetti.

It might be the future. The future of national security, at least.

This quaint thought comes to mind as the result of news emerging from the inner bowels of the Kremlin. It seems the prospect of porousness created by WikiLeaks and current Russian resident Edward Snowden has become all too much for delicate Russian dispositions to bear.

More Technically Incorrect

So the Kremlin has started ordering typewriters. Lots of them. Indeed, … [Read more]

BOND 24 brings Daniel Craig back in October of 2015

In a bit of an unexpected jump on the film release season this year, BOND 24 has been announced – this the newest 007 film set for November of 2015 (or October if you live in the UK). This film will be rolling out with John Logan as screenplay writer and Sam Mendes returning as director of the film. And of course Daniel Craig is still Bond – James Bond.

BO56OmYCIAImld0

This film appears to be taking on the hero title scheme accepted by so many high-powered media and device creators over the past year, bringing on note of which film this is, and that’s it. While The World may still be Not Enough, this agent-filled film will simply be known as its number.

You’ll also note that the first image sent out in support of this film continues the use of the modern-day 007 logo, complete with the pistol grip. This logo has been in use throughout the new millennium and signals the continuation of aims with the studio, actors, et all. The release of this film also follows suit.

Expect BOND 24 to be appearing in 2015 on the 23rd of October inside the UK. Meanwhile residents of the USA will have to sit and cry until the 6th of November. James Bond being a through-and-through British establishment, we’d expect nothing less.

Also note that this news was hereby splattered on the screen by the infamous @007 twitter account, a rare oddity in the Twitter world made for the one true Bond. That means it’s official.

Nokia Lumia 1020 to launch in the UK this quarter on O2 and Three

That 41-megapixel Windows Phone you’ve been hearing all about? Well, despite the NY launch event, it will indeed launch in the UK. In fact, it’ll get here later this quarter. O2 and Three have announced that they’ll be offering the Lumia 1020 in stores and online and while both networks currently aren’t running an LTE service, Three has promised the phone it offers will be Ultrafast ready, broadly meaning it might run on 4G, but it’ll certainly offer up to DC-HSPA speeds at launch. Telefonica, the parent company of O2, has promised that an “exclusive variant of the device” will make an appearance in select European and Latin American markets. More news from the other networks when we hear it.

Slingbox 500 gets My Media feature, morphs into a streaming box

While the Slingbox 500 lets you place-shift and sync media from your iOS or Android devices, it’s a shame it hasn’t been able to play other media, too, since it’s parked beside your TV. Slingbox thought so as well, and announced the My Media feature way back in January that would bring video and photo playback to that device and its Slingbox 350 cousin. It’s finally arrived via a firmware update, and you’ll now be able to check out video and images in most formats from a FAT32 or NTFC drives under 3TB in size. You’ll also get better streaming via iOS devices, improved SlingSync transfer speeds and minor bug fixes, too. It should be arriving for the Slingbox 350 soon as well, so if you’re hoping to declutter a bit, check your device to grab it.

Path partners with Nokia to bring app to Lumia 1020, ‘all Windows Phones’

Path partners with Nokia to bring app to Lumia 1020

After months of anticipation, Path is finally bringing its social network to the Windows Phone, and it’s starting with the Nokia Lumia 1020. The app, which is still in the works and hasn’t been assigned a launch date, will take advantage of the company’s new imaging SDK and its plethora of photo filters. Although the main focus of Path’s announcement was centered on the new Lumia, it also mentioned that the app will indeed come to “all Windows Phones.” No word on if the launch will occur across the board at the same time (nor if this includes Windows Phone 7.5 or only affects WP8 users) or if it will be featured only on the 1020 at first, but we’ll update you as soon as we know. In the meantime, there’s a press release for you to digest below the break.

The Tri-Folds Sofa Gives You Plenty of Places to Stash the Remote

Every sofa doubles as a black hole that sucks and traps the pocket contents of all who dare sit on it. But when the TV remote goes missing in a room accented with this lovely Tri-Folds sofa by Camille Paillard, the odds are pretty good that it’s just hiding inside one of its folded pockets.

9 gadgets that should never become self-aware

If your Glass ever starts showing "A Clockwork Orange" in the corner of your eye against your will, we're all in trouble.

(Credit: CNET)

It’s a science fiction trope that keeps many folks, particularly our less tech-savvy relatives, up at night. What happens if the machines take over?

Those of us who are a little more familiar with the world of technology tend to be less concerned, in my experience, about a real-life Skynet becoming self-aware and reinterpreting its own code to call for the extermination of its creators.

But surely there’s no harm in being prepared, right? So why not try to identify those gadgets that are currently out there now that would pose the biggest threat (or just be downright creepy) should they be granted the gifts of sentience and free will?
