Bitcoin ban means one less option for bribing Thai officials

Bitcoin ban means one less option for bribing Thai officials

Thailand isn’t exactly known for its unquestionable ethics; activities that would quickly be labeled as illegal in the West are practiced in plain view in Bangkok. Loose regulations mean that a nearly limitless array of goods and services can be purchased with cash and even credit — a currency like Bitcoin would only be necessary for the most heinous of exchanges. It’s a bit ironic, then, that the Thai government is now the world’s first to ban Bitcoin. Following a conference at the Bank of Thailand yesterday, the Foreign Exchange Administration and Policy Department voted to make the digital coinage illegal, prohibiting people from buying, selling or trading Bitcoins for goods or services. Additionally, Bitcoins cannot be moved into or out of the country, rendering any current stockpiles worthless. The Bank of Thailand ended its dispatch with a promise to revisit the ruling in the future, though this landmark decision could prove to be the beginning of the end for Bitcoin.

HTC mid-tier devices planned with poor third quarter expected

It goes without saying that HTC has been focusing on the top-tier phone market recently, with the release of the HTC One and HTC One mini, as well as the DROID DNA late last year. However, the company is wanting to focus more on releasing mid-tier devices, as the market in several countries has grown in that respect.

During the company’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Peter Chou said that HTC’s upcoming plans will “address some of our challenges of mid-tier product competitiveness.” Chou says that the company has suffered recently due to intense competition with flagship devices, but he thinks that focusing more on mid-tier products will get the company back on track.

Essentially, HTC is looking to diversify its lineup of products, and we’ve already seen evidence of that recently, with the unveiling of the Desire 500, which is the company’s newest low-tier smartphone that includes a 4.3-inch 800×480 display, with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor clocked at 1.2GHz and 1GB of RAM on the inside.

Aside from focusing on more mid-tier devices in the future, the company also wants to focus on more partnerships, and Chou notes that he hopes this will help HTC make a big statement in the mobile market once 2014 rolls around. Chou is also hoping to finish out the year on a high note, following what the company is predicting to be a poor third quarter.

HTC is expecting Q3 revenue in the range of $1.7 billion to $2 billion, which would be down from the previous quarter’s revenue of $2.35 billion. This would as much as a 30% drop in revenue. However, the company says that Q4 will be much better, but didn’t mention financial outlooks that far ahead yet.

You’re probably going to want to sit down for this one. And hold your loved ones near if you’ve got them, because it’s time to wake up from our slumber of lies—apparently Jurassic Park is, in fact, not scientifically accurate. All because of one little, mistyped mosquito.

Microsoft SkyDrive.com Updated With New Enhancements

There are a lot of ways through which you can manage your files on SkyDrive. There are mobile apps and softwares for Windows and Mac. If you like managing files through your web browser, by going to www.skydrive.com, you’re in luck. In a new blog post today Microsoft has detailed several enhancements that it has made to the web interface of its cloud storage solution.

Files saved on SkyDrive can now be selectively shared from anywhere on the service, previously either entire folders or individual files from a specific folder could be shared. Different files can now be shared with different people. The Shared view will display all of the files you’ve shared, and will also display files that have been shared with you. High quality pictures can now be viewed in their full resolution, SkyDrive.com automatically determines the DPI or dots per inch of your device and shows higher quality pictures and thumbnails. Animated GIFs can now be viewed in full animation as opposed to viewing them as static images. Managing photos has been improved as well, photos can now be manually rotated and the view can be configured to display photos in a certain folder instead of displaying an entire batch of photos.

Netflix Personalized User Profiles Show Up On Apple TV

Netflix Personalized User Profiles Show Up On Apple TV

Numerous reports have been received of the fact that Netflix personalized user profiles are showing up on Apple TV. This feature itself is expected to be launched in August. However, a lot of users have reached out to Macrumors saying that they are already able to see personalized user profiles in the Netflix app on Apple TV. These profiles allow users of shared accounts to keep all of their interests and recommendations separate from other members that use that same Netflix account.

Previously, Netflix only offered a single interface for all users. This meant that recommendations and interests would be compounded based on the input from all of the users, they wouldn’t be tailored for one individual user. On the Apple TV, users will be able to manage profiles, as well as create queues and see the list of recently viewed items. Netflix has said that the official release of this feature will take place this summer, after that individual users would be able to set up their own profiles on the web which would then be accessible through Apple TV.

Building Brick Mug

The great pyramids of Giza were built block by block on the backs of slaves, but since we live in a modern day world where such slavery is no longer that obvious in our reality, and we humans still have this innate need to build stuff, here is the £19.99 Building Brick Mug that ought to satisfy all of your building urges. I guess you can say that the Building Brick Mug would make for a decent cornerstone of any drink time, no? It will play nice with a wide variety of building bricks, including LEGO, PixelBlocks, Mega Bloks, KRE-O or K’NEX Bricks,

I suppose having one of these bad boys would make life a whole lot more productive at the office, and it will also be easier to pass your time there. After all, you might just find the solution to your work problem right in front of you as building your own design on your favorite mug with your favorite coffee brew inside might result in an eureka moment. Do bear in mind that you will need to provide your very own building bricks though, with your imagination being the limit.

3D-Printed Inkjet Printer Cartridges Could Save You a Lot of $$$

Inkjet printers are relatively cheap. That’s because it’s the inkjet printer cartridges that will burn a hole in your pocket. It’s the old razor-razorblade business model.

Depending on how often you use your printer, you could be changing cartridges as often as every week. You could save your old cartridges and get them refilled, and just buy a new one if it gets busted… or you could just print your own. 3D-print, I mean.

3D Printed Inkjet Printer Cartridges

Frankly, it’s about time someone did this!

InkFactory recently used a 3D printer to print an inkjet cartridge. A standard ink bladder was installed, and voila! That’s a ton of money saved minus the mess and the hassles that usually come with most ink cartridge refill kits. Of course, there is the matter of the amount of time it takes to print the cartridge shell itself.

They used a MakerBot Replicator 2 to print the cloned Kodak inkjet cartridge, which is relatively simple in design. Cartridges for other printers might be more complex, but I think it’s only a matter of time before they get the 3D-printed treatment.

Now all we need is a 3D printer that prints 3D printer parts. Oh wait, we already have one.

Lenovo Apparently Banned By Top Spy Agencies

Lenovo Apparently Banned By Top Spy Agencies

Chinese companies such as Huawei have always been accused of helping the Chinese government in its spying operations. Countries such as the U.S. and U.K. take special measures to ensure that any Huawei equipment being installed is free from all vulnerabilities that can let China spy on them. A new report from the Australian Financial Review claims that top spy agencies like the MI6 and CIA have banned Lenovo machines from their networks over fears that they might contain “back-door” hardware that would aid China’s spying attempts.

Lenovo has said that it hasn’t been informed on any such restriction on sales, and that it would look in to this situation closely. Australia’s Department of Defence has confirmed that Lenovo machines haven’t been approved for top-secret networks. Back in 2006, the U.S. State Department said that over 16,000 Lenovo computers won’t be used on its classified systems so as to not compromise U.S. information and communication channels. Right now there’s no proof that Lenovo actually installs “back-door” hardware to aid China. Huawei recently told its criticizers to put up evidence of its links with the Chinese government or “shut up.”
