Traveling Solo: A Manifesto for the Modern Woman

The first time I took an international trip alone, I was faking it. Well, it’s not like 20-year-old me pretended to fly to Paris and travel across Europe to visit a friend in Budapest. After failing to land a summer newspaper internship, I impulse-bought a plane ticket I couldn’t afford. The deception was there from the start: For some reason I lied and told everyone it was a great deal. It wasn’t. I told my parents I had enough money to see the trip through. I didn’t. I told my then-boyfriend I was super excited about it, that I knew how to have fun alone. I didn’t. I swore up and down that it wasn’t a big deal that I didn’t speak French or German or Hungarian and had no clue about the culture in most places I’d be traveling. I’d never been out of the U.S. before.

Hence all that faking it. I tried so hard to pretend I was the carefree world traveler I desperately wished I’d been raised to be. But in truth I didn’t really know how to have fun alone. I was too scared I’d sound like an idiot ordering at restaurants, so I just bought bread and cheese from the grocery store and ate in public parks. I didn’t make friends with other travelers. I walked until my feet felt like they were going to fall off, then walked some more because I wasn’t sure how and where to relax. I probably would have had a better time if I’d just owned up to being the naive American girl that everyone else saw.

Vinylize Turns Old Records into Groovy Glasses

People love to recycle old vinyl records into new things. Vinylize makes hipster eyewear out of old records. So how do they make glasses from old records?

Well, before the records are cut, they are bonded with cellulose acetate to frame them and give them strength. It makes for a really unique look, that’s for sure. Very hipster. Definitely groovy. Here’s a short video that shows Vinylize’s production process:

Vinylize is based in Budapest, Hungary, and they have been making vinyl glasses for over a decade, so they do know what they are doing. The sunglasses can be purchased online from their website, where each pair retails for about €330 (~$440 USD). If you are a hipster looking for something new for your wardrobe, here it is.

Hulu bids are in, if it sells then the next owner’s identity may hinge on video rights

Take two of the sale of Hulu is approaching its inevitable end, as multiple sources report the final bids have come in. Currently the site is owned by Disney, Fox and Comcast, while reported interested buyers include DirecTV, Chernin Group / AT&T and Guggenheim Digital Media. Of the potential buyers, The Hollywood Reporter reports Guggenheim would be the one most likely to retain the site’s “entreprenurial spirit,” while DirecTV may want to use it both as a part of its satellite package and as a standalone business. Finally the Chernin Group is reportedly backed by AT&T, which may have goals similar to those of DirecTV.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the site’s current owners are considering how potential buyers will want to license content going forward as part of the bids, with potential restrictions on their top rated shows, or longer windows before content is available on Hulu. We’ll have to wait and find out who had the best pitch before we move on to the next step — deciding if whatever Hulu becomes under new ownership is still worth visiting.

The RIAA Just Got Insanely Fast at Censoring Links From Google

The RIAA Just Got Insanely Fast at Censoring Links From Google

It should come as no surprise that the RIAA, of all organizations, plays particularly fast and loose with its DMCA takedown requests. But thanks to a ridiculous blitz, the RIAA just had its 25 millionth link removed from Google search results. And it’s not slowing down.

Apple budget iPhone reportedly leaks (but keep the salt handy)

Could this be the much-rumored budget iPhone Apple aims to battle Android at the low-end with? That’s the claim by Techdy, which managed to grab some hands-on time with a plastic-shelled smartphone bearing Apple’s logo and a whole lot of speculation. According to the leak, you’re looking at the white version of the upcoming budget iPhone set to launch alongside the iPhone 5S later this year.

budget_iphone_leak

Exactly where the phone came from, is unclear. Techdy has links with M.I.C. Gadget, a site we’ve seen leak pre-announcement gadgets often from manufacturing sources in the past, though if the handset is legitimate then this is certainly one of the biggest to spill out prior to an OEM’s intentions.

Suspending the usual disbelief, if only for a moment, the site claims that the handset as a whole feels far from cheap, despite how it has been billed. Made of polycarbonate – just as Nokia uses for its Lumia Windows Phones – it will have a 4-inch screen like the iPhone 5, going by the display assembly – but is thicker and blunter than the current Apple flagship.

On the bottom there’s a Lightning port and four speaker holes, along with the headphone jack and a hole for a microphone. The display itself has narrower side bezels than we’ve seen on an iPhone so far.

However, it’s also worth noting that Techdy has seized the opportunity to throw together an Android-powered clone (which looks quite a bit like HTC’s ill-fated First, in fact) of the supposed leaked iPhone, and will be selling it as the “Basic Bear”. That could well make this claimed preview of the new iPhone more like a thinly-veiled piece of rumor-mill marketing, but we’ll likely have to wait closer to the official budget iPhone reveal to find out for sure.

Put Your Kids to Work as Junior Massage Therapists with These Playmat T-Shirts

Playtime doesn’t have to be so tiring for parents. I mean, you already spend most of your time at home picking up after the kids, feeding them, doing their laundry, and helping them with schoolwork. So it’s only fair that playtime is easy on you, the parent, while still being fun and hopefully education for your child.

I’m not so sure on the educational part, but the Street and Railroad Playmat Shirt will definitely let you take a breather for the entire duration of it.

The shirts are basic tees with colorful railroads printed on the back. So all you have to do is lie down, face-flat, on the ground or on your bed, and let the shirt do all the playing. Just hand your kids some toy cars, LEGO bricks, and toy soldiers, and let them have some fun on your back – and give you a back massage – while you read a book or take a quick snooze.

Video claims to show budget iPhone, will sell you Android imitation today

Polished video claims to show budget iPhone, will sell you Android imitation today

Some things just look too good to be true, and this extremely polished hands-on — purporting to be the rumored, as yet unconfirmed budget iPhone — is possibly one of them. However, this comes via sources associated with M.I.C. Gadget, which has previous form in this area, and it does tally with previously seen incarnations. So, is this just a collection of design cues put together in order to sell the “Bear” brand Android imitation shown later in the same video (past the break,) or could it be the real iPhone housing? At the moment we’re buying neither, but with such a detailed set of images (at the source,) it provides a tantalising taste of what could be, if nothing else.

World’s Largest Headphones: Sound of the Colossus

When you have the world’s largest headphones, you don’t put them on your head. You sit between the earcups and let the sound assault you. These monstrous headphones were created by Dallyn Rule for the recent Mini Maker Faire in Vancouver, B.C.

headphones
They measure almost a full human body length and they are completely functional and made from 100% recycled material. Making this huge pair of headphones has been a dream of Dallyn’s since childhood.

They may be the only headphones designed to never ever touch your ears or head. Yet it still produces music designed for individual listening – like a surround that affects your entire body. And it doesn’t affect those around you very much at all. So it is a very personal way to experience music.

Great work Dallyn, though is it just me, or are you wearing actual headphones in that second image above?
