DIY Quadcopter Kit: Drone It Yourself

Drones like Parrot’s smart quadcopters are slowly becoming popular toys. While they’re not dirt cheap, they’re very stable, easy to pilot and some of them even have cameras or can be fitted with one. But what if you could turn anything into a drone? That’s exactly what Jasper Van Loenen set out to do when he made Drone It Yourself.

Yep, that’s a bicycle rim drone. The kit consists of four propellers driven by ESC motors, four C-clamps, a Bluetooth module, a receiver and an OpenPilot flight controller. All of these parts fit neatly in a custom briefcase, but the resulting drone isn’t always pretty. Actually you know what? These makeshift drones are beyond pretty. Watch the rim, a keyboard and more take flight:

Needs more R. Kelly. Tinkerers can head to Jasper’s website to download the 3D files for the printed parts.

This Clothespin Cable Car Manages to Make Laundry Day Less Depressing

You can avoid for it as long as possible, re-wearing outfits again and again, but eventually the awfulness that is laundry day will come. It’s even worse if a clothesline is involved, requiring you to painstakingly hang garments instead of just cramming them all in the dryer, but this adorable cable car clothespin holder should bring you at least a sliver of joy.

Dropbox hack allows bypass of two-factor authentication

Many online services are implementing two-factor authentication to bulk up security and prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information. Dropbox is just one of those online services that offers the feature, but it’s been recently discovered that the company’s two-factor authentication method is still vulnerable to breaching.

dropbox-568x500

It turns out that as long as someone has the username and password of your Dropbox account, they can bypass the two-factor authentication and log right into your account with a couple of clever tricks. Since Dropbox doesn’t verify email addresses when users sign up for a new account, a hacker can use a new email address that’s similar to an existing one by placing a period in somewhere, similar to how Gmail addresses work.

For this fake account, two-factor authentication is enabled and an emergency code is generated in case users ever lose their phone. The hacker will then login to the victim’s account, but will be prompted to enter the code for that account. However, the hacker will simply select that the victim lost their phone and they’ll be promoted for that emergency code.

Since the email address that the hacker signed up with is similar to the victim’s email address. the emergency code will work on the victim’s account. From there, the hacker can disable two-factor authentication and gain access into the victim’s Dropbox account. This is because that “baseballboy@yahoo.com” is registered as being the same “baseball.boy@yahoo.com,” just like how Gmail handles email addresses.

Of course, you have to know the user’s password before you can do this, but once you get a hold of it, it seems relatively easy to bypass Dropbox’s two-factor authentication. However, the security team that found the vulnerability is already said to be working with Dropbox to fix the bug.

Solar Team Eindhoven crafts solar-powered family car (video)

Solar Team Eindhoven claims first solarpowered family car

The solar-powered cars we’ve seen to date are usually built for just one person — not very useful when many of us need to carry passengers. TU/e’s Solar Team Eindhoven just brought some much-needed realism on that front by unveiling Stella, which it claims is the world’s first solar-powered family car. The vehicle’s combination of efficient solar cells with lightweight construction allows such radical concepts as back seats and a trunk while maintaining a 373-mile range. The barebones design won’t rival most modern cars for luxury, but it’s also energy-positive — in typical use, it can contribute back to the power grid. You may even see it outside of competitions; while Stella is designed with October’s World Solar Challenge in mind, Solar Team Eindhoven plans to make the car road-legal. Let’s hope we catch it putting around Dutch streets.

Empire State Building Steals Show With First-Time-Ever Light Show On July, 4, 2013They say it doesn’t matter how long you live, the world will continue to
provide with "first-time experiences." That adage apparently goes for
landmark buildings as well. This year with the iconic Empire State
Building celebrating its 82nd birthday,  its new LED lighting system lit
up the skyline in syncopation with the July 4th fireworks on the Hudson
River.

iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 tipped for August production: specifications MIA

As months pass since the last release of devices in Apple’s iPad range, suggestions of production of the two newest entries in the environment appear. This week word comes from Taiwan that one of Apple’s most-used manufacturing groups, Foxconn, will be ramping up production on both a second generation of the iPad mini and the 5th generation of the full-sized iPad as soon as next month in China. This news comes attached with a supposed production sample of the new iPad mini, sharper edges, black casing, thinner body and all.

What you’re seeing here is an in-the-flesh version of what Apple has been tipped to be bringing to the market later this year for some time. The iPad mini 2 (or more likely simply titled iPad mini, replacing the first), will carry with it a set of internals advanced beyond that of its predecessor. At the moment it’s still suggested that this model will bring a newly minted mini-sized Retina display, but just as many tips to the contrary have surfaced due to production restrictions.

NOTE: This article’s image contains a photo of the original iPad mini (on the left) and the suggested iPad mini 2 from Mobile China Union. They appear extremely similar in size and shape, save the thickness and possible sharpening of corners – if only very slightly.

It’s also been tipped – all the way back in May – that the iPad mini processor will be the same as its original iteration while the Retina quality display will come first.

According to leaked schematics from late last month, the iPad 5 (still titled “iPad”, as it were) will be popping up with iPad mini-like edges and an ever-so-slightly smaller body. This will be the first time since the switch to the iPad 2 that the iPad will have made such a significant leap from its current body type.

And don’t forget the iPad 5 case leak from back in April as well. They’re looking a lot more realistic the more we’re seeing these iPad mini edges, that’s for certain.
